Kiwix, Wikipedia offline

The whole of Wikipedia on your device!
Kiwix is an offline content reader which can be used to download and browse Wikipedia as well as other sources (Ubuntu documentation, WikiLeaks, WikiSource, WikiVoyage, etc).

Once you download the content file (potentially very large), you don't need any connection to use it.

The app is a lightweight piece of software reading ZIM files stored on your device or external storage (SD card).

Please read the instructions inside the App or on the website to learn about the various content that we offer.

Note: Kiwix is also available on regular computers (Windows, Mac, Linux).

This Kiwix is well worth having, especially now that there is a setting for external storage. With a setting for the micro-sd or external storage, and with all the various things that can be downloaded, this Kiwix is just as good as Minipedia and better. The company that is allowing free access to its off-line zim files is being generous. It looks like zim files have the power to work off-line.

Loved it on iOS, love it on Android. Being able to carry around what amounts to a small library in your pocket and all of that in several languages is just awesome. Thank you! There are two things I miss, but they may be by design. One is to switch between two different language ZIM files from within an article and the other is looking at images in a screen-filling fashion. But these are incredibly minor issues, considering I can hold Wikipedia in my hands, offline.

I want to give the app 5 stars, but it is missing a wide variety of improvements...things that would make this app more usable. Let me just list them. Fyi, I'm using a Galaxy S9+ 1. Downloads won't keep downloading unless the downloads tab is open (regardless of settings) 2. Is it possible to open the app on just the main library and not the last article I opened? (personal preference) 3. Disorganized. I'm very thankful there are a ton of choices, but they all seem out of order; by category/language/size, etc. There needs to be a better way to sort through the files (both library and downloadable content tab. Also, can we get check marks to choose multiple things to download instead of repeatedly clicking back to the "online" tab? 4. There should be a way to control downloads more (sort, download settings, speed settings, etc).I want to be able to set one download at a time by default, for example. 5. Constant crashing when pausing/unpausing downloads 6. Can we get a % completed option on the downloads page? Anyway, I really do love this app, but I feel it still needs work. I'm going to continue to use it and use my workarounds. Thank you developers for the effort.

The iPad version is better. Extremely useful when flying or going to an area with no internet. Couldn't get it to work quite right on the phone. I did get a library downloaded and I read an article then it had issues. So I ditched it and went back to the iPad. I wish the interface was less cumbersome and came with more descriptions.

Thank you for all the work, but downloading 7 GB on a tablet over wifi is very difficult and fails all the time. Could you not program it so that when it is interrupted it goes on later instead of just saying "failed"? I found a Kiwix page on the Internet where I can use Bittorrent to download the file. Maybe you should advertise this option more, it would save a lot of trouble.

The app (and of course the available offline files) are excellent, and makes knowledge readily accessible. The main shortcoming is that files must be downloaded completely whenever new information are added. So when 50mb worth data is added, this addition is not available as a separate download (as continuation or splits) that will be synced along with the previous data, instead the entire 3.4GB must be downloaded again. Its too exploitative.

I love the idea of this app and I'm hoping it gets developed further. However, right now there are too many bugs/badly designed features to use it 1) The content is sorted in what appears to be random order. Wikipedia in English is #32 on the list for me. Why? Surely it's the one file everyone wants to have, right? 2) Content page + Night mode = white text on white background. Please fix 3) Tried to download Wikipedia like 5-10 times and it fails every time. Probably not the app's fault but argh

When I download big files I often get a error that says "Request not successful" which stops the download. Makes bigger files impossible to download. I also have to keep my phone on and unlocked or else it won't keep downloading. I tried to download it off the website but the app doesn't recognize the file when I open it through the app. Pretty good when you have things downloaded. Would be 5 stars

Wiki How downloaded correctly and works as advertised. Wikipedia has never downloaded past halfway before timing out and needing to be started over. ZIMGIT files do not work. They download, but will not open (says external file but always fails to connect, most recent update was just a few days ago).

it was good but now it is terrible. Download is always stuck in background and there is no way to speed up. And it is keeping pop-up some old download notification even it has been cancel long time ago. Now the main Page is stuck some page and there is no way to back to home. The home icon is not working at all. And language filter is not working at all!

I've always loved this app, but recently the home page has started showing up as blank, and random pages will appear in search results while you type, but will not display as pages when clicked on. It can be fixed temporarily by uninstalling and reinstalling, but this only seems to work for a few hours.

I downloaded the mathematics content, then put my phone in airplane mode to test reading the content offline. I can read everything pertaining to mathematics on Wikipedia without an internet connection. Links that would normally appear on Wikipedia to pages not contained within the mathematics field do not appear as links, which I think is a good thing. I have updated this review from my previous 1-star rating.

Android download manager needs a resume ability. Multi-gigabyte download, gets 90% done. Different app forces a reboot because it had a problem. Kiwix download picks up where it left off? Noooooooo. Starts over from 0. Implement a resuming protocol please. Like MFTP, T.127, BitTorrent, or UFTP. Heck, even HTTP can resume. I can't even use this app till the data finishes downloading. #NoStars

Good offline app for Wikipedia, but navigation needs significant improvement on the access to the downloaded content : it should be more direct than just through the dotted menu on the right; that's tedious. Layout of the content is good, much better than in Wiki Gold (which I think has been discontinued).

i click on any file to download and nothing happens. i have the external sd card selected with 119gb free. Even tested a small file and it wouldnt download. no error just click and nothing. Update. Found the previous version and installed that one. It downloaded fine (still downloading) so it's something to do with your new way of downloading. FYI I'm using it on an old android 5.1.1 tablet. Got it downloaded but under device nothing shows up. I have external selected for storage (tried both) the files are there with zimaa being the first file extension and goes on from there. However nothing shows up under device no matter how many times I've restarted. I updated to latest after downloading and still nothing.

Perfect app. It can be better. The only downside is when we scroll up and the menu on the bottom jumps up (this exhausts lots of space) and disappears when we scroll down. The whole thing can be placed inside the action bar (three dots menu).

Thanks to the developers of kiwix/wikimed. I am in my penultimate year in medical school in Nigeria and this app have been of imense help to me and all my mentees whom I have recommended this app to from inception. But, I do have a little problem with the updated kiwix app..I have observed that I have to click a letter multiple times while typing before it reflects and with each word search I have to readjust the resolution to suit my screen..I somewhat prefer the old kiwix app to this one

Best app ever, concerning knowledge, whatever the field, in the palm of your hand, without needing Internet access, everywhere and anytime accessible. Got myself a better phone (Xperia Z5 compact), a 400Gb microSD card, and put the complete English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish Wikipedias with images on it (almost 200Gb). Now I have several lifetimes of knowledge and reading material in my pocket. It is addicting. And Wow, it is free!Simply amazing. Thank you Kiwix team!

Very helpful. Download what you want, and have it offline no matter what. With solar powered battery banks, you will have helpful internet in emergencies. It's not just survival prepping either, it's things like Khan academy education, history books, dictionary, maps, the entire Wikipedia.

App keeps stopping on me keep stopping on me and on the downloads as well, or not starting them. I had the beta app installed and thought it was just a beta issue so I left the program because I really wanted to download the books. just to find out it's in the regular version as well. Might as well go back to the beta tester. At least I can help give comments there.

Overall a pretty good app. But I have several files in the proper format that I can't open, because the app refuses to detect them, and THERE'S NO FILE OPEN COMMAND. This is arrogant and stupid, like you want your application to be a closed ecosystem. Add a file open command, and I'll change my review to 5 stars.

Searching for a wiki database to download is an absolute nightmare on Android. Filters are buggy, "english"? Why not also French and Russian? The app itself runs great but actually choosing data is way too hard. If you want to sideload the web site is also way too terrible. The basic act of loading information into this application should. Be. Simple. Thus the stars. A disservice to knowledge is done.

Rus. M. Oct 28, 2018

apparently, if you ever pause the download, it starts over again from scratch. I just watched it delete an already downloaded 2.15 gig .zim file as soon as the newest chunk finished downloading. so, if I want it to ever finish 77 gigs of wikipedia, I have to leave my phone home and plugged in for 2 to 3 days (and vainly hope the download never stops for any reason). that would explain why, despite downloading 10 or 20 gigs a night, it hasn't #*@$ing finished, and never will. for this I bought a $40 brand new sd card...

This app is a perfect minimal interface for offline knowledge. On a 128GB or more storage device it is perfect for exploring somewhat curated knowledge and gaining information without networking. #1 app for disaster recovery knowledge. One con that could be improved upon would be more wikis and forums as well as the ability to search both more content to download and to search through downloaded content better.

Now broken. Can't load Zim files, even from internal storage (Android 11 , Samsung Galaxy s21). Suggestion to developers: try testing software before releasing it. Is this project alive? It's been quiet months ( since being broken ). I've moved on to Aard2 and am very impressed!

Slightly frustrating, but it seems to work ok. The thing I didn't realize at first is that "short text" means one paragraph per article. Text only means that the full text is provided.

Much later edit: i have to commend the kiwix team for being on top of their biggest issues. I've no longer had any problems with my downloads wiping, and this app now does what it advertised quite well. If i still had to nitpick I'd say that the interface is somewhat confusing, but that's a minor issue at most.
