Thank you for this app!!!! The information in this app is exactly what I have been looking for. The notes are great. The graphs are great. The only issue I have is that the dark mode affects my eyes negatively. I find that I can't look at the screen for too long without it bothering my eyes. Is there an option to change it that I am missing, or is there any way a light mode version can be added???? I would like to use it more if I could. Thanks.
I think there were only two instances when I entered the name of the steel and this app didn't have them in the database. Both times I was seeking info on rarely used steels from the 1960's. This app is my go-to reference for all things 'steel.' The descriptions are detailed yet easy to understand. Love it!
I love this app for quickly referencing various blade steels. The database is huge, and all the data that I'd like to know is clearly represented. Alloy composition, maker, references, and a bit of history make the descriptions interesting to read on their own. Awesome app, if you're a knife enthusiast this is great to have.
Excellent piece of kit. Only downside would be the inconsistency in thorougness of explanations between each steel. Heat treatment information would also be great to have inbedded. Even with these downsides, the flaws disappear when the app is accompined with google. Anyone giving anything less than 5 stars for this excellent work is a disingenuous person.
Tons of relevant information, if you want to know all about different knife steels this app will tell you everything 👍👍👍 Update: I just wanted to add that I have been using this app now for about 4 months and every time I see a new steel that I don't know I open this app and it tells me everything I need to know about it. Great tool for any knife collector or if you're just doing research on a good night to buy
The information on some popular steels is a bit thin. But the one thing I'm missing the most is a comparison option. Even though the images show something similar I couldn't find it in the app. Great app otherwise!!!
One of my favorite apps, fast, intuitive layout, huge database, works offline, no advertisements I have seen yet. Perfect! Essential for anyone that works with or has hobbies involving steel like knife collectors. Can't say enough great stuff about this app!
Good app that helps in determining suitability of knife steels. You see a lot of steels that appear to be high tech based on complicated numbering system but are actually lower grade steels that may be unsuitable for your intended use. This app helps you sort that out.
Excellent quick reference chart. When your buddies claim that the latest, greatest steel alloy they just paid 10 times more for is the best, show them it's a remake of the same old garbage. (And a practical guide for knowing what stones to use for some premium steel)
Excellent practical reference for cutlery enthusiasts. One can see the effort put into researching certain alloys, and the program is updated frequently. The creator's passion is apparent. I appreciate it.
generally amazing, great to have such sortable data at my fingertips; some things could use a finer point in thier treatment, eg. nature of 'work hardening' --> elastic deformation, grain size/orientation, etc.
Great detail about what steels are used in blades and such. One suggestion is to have a place(s) to purchase the metals. I can see author put ALOT of work into this app, especially in the details describing alloys wording them so anyone can understand. Im surprised this doesnt have more downloads.
A nice quick way to get an overview of various steels. Great for anyone who is new to knife steels. I use this often, since there's too many steels to know. It also gets updated often. Would highly recommend.
Very useful and reliable app. I refer to it often whenever I make knife purchases. Especially helpful for understanding properties of the steels and why they are good in one area and lackluster in others by their composition.
Great info, although some steels are blank without a description or use explanation and also quite a bit of typos but that doesn't bother me we're knife nuts not spelling bee nerds 😋🔪🔪🔪 if i could make any one suggestion or an upgrade- I would add the feature to compare different alloys side by side on the graph, might help people decide one way or the other before purchase. that or a breakdown of which elements serve what purpose ie. chromium aids in corrosion resistance
Great app I felt like I knew a little about steel now with this I can overwhelm myself with information. But if you take time to play around with the app you can answer almost every question you could have. Want know more about the molecules of the steel there is a tab that can be opened which tells you by a knife makers perspective on what it is and why its helpful.
Excellent resource for blade makers who want to expand their Damascus variants. Also for maker who just want to experiment with different combinations. This app still allows difference in a harded blade with variances in wear resistance or edge holding capabilities. It's a great first resourse to go to.
This is THE compendium of steels, and a must-have for both new and long-time knife aficionado. It's regularly updated, and for the chemist or amateur smith, the comparative steel composition charts and explanation of elements' roles in alloys is helpful. The reason for 4 vs 5 stars is that there isn't any comparative discussion of steels' characteristics as blades. This app is meant as a tool for knife owners, so info about a relative performance comparing various steels would be useful.
I appreciate the very broad collection of steels. However, the UI on on this app could be improved for aesthetics (just personal preference). Pictures would make this app more attractive ad well.
It is a very useful tool for steels. Provides the properties/make up of the steel, cross reference to similar steels and comments on the steel and history of origin in many cases. It is updated from time to time.
Really handy, although more examples of what else the various steels are used for would be good and some of the descriptions are way too short.
Love this app. Very thankful towards the developer for obviously doing a truck load of research and then passing it on to us the user, plenty of detail on more steels than you can think of. (One note if possible, could you put just a smidgen more info about edge retention on steels, thank you) **UPDATE** thanks again for this app, & the updates, I now find more and more info on edge retention, toughness, etc. And I am loving it. EVERY time I buy a knife or am just browsing, I consult this app!
Current app that is always updated with all types of steel and an amazing resource to refer to when making knife purchases. Has taught me a lot about metallurgy.
Very thorough with almost every steel identified. A suggested addition might be to add more makers highlights about the composition, eg hardenability, toughness, wear resistance, etc. Used far more often than I ever expected, thank you.
It lists everything from the most common, to the most exotic of knife steels. Fast searches and handy comparisons, with detailed and up-to-date information. This app is, by far, THE BEST reference for blade steels. I also recommend the Zknives website. Thank you, Zvi, for creating such a great information source! You and Larrin Thomas (Knife Steel Nerds) have both done an excellent job of educating me and countless others about the complex subject of blade steel metallurgy. Thank you both!
Extremely useful, has a very wide range of steels and great info about each. Some are extremely detailed, others more brief, but all I've seen so far will give you a decent general idea of what to expect from a steel. Never seen as complete a list of knife steels in one place before, and this even includes multiple brand names for a given type of steel.
