KnowYourDrive helps you learn safer driving habits and gives you more control over how much you pay for car insurance.
After each household driver downloads the app at no cost, you’ll receive an introductory car insurance discount. The app then continues to monitor your driving behavior and show your progress, so you can keep learning and adjust your driving habits accordingly.
The app displays your driving score, which is based on driving behaviors such as hard braking, sudden acceleration and high speed. The better the driving behavior, the better the score.
And depending on how you drive, your policy can earn a program discount on your car insurance. Nice!

Being on a rental car bus, being on the train from the terminal to baggage claim, flying on a plane, picking up your phone in a parking garage to scan your access entry/exit code, being a passenger, using Google maps, all need manual intervention so they do not impact your driving performance. Also figuring out how the acceleration gauge can go from less than average to maxed out with just a few local short trips is impossible to determine. This software is a pain to have.
This app judges you on your driving for safety but when you dont have a choice but to hard brake to avoid an accident your streak ends. Now you have to start your streak all over or delete the ride. You drive a long distance safely and one idiot messes it up for you. It's either hard brake or get into an accident. What would you choose? The app would rather you ram another car instead of hard brake just to keep your streak going. This is not promoting safe driving.
Seems to work fine as intended. However I really wish there was a way to remove the stupid car icon at the top of my phone where it indicates notifications. Also the unlock screen has a constant ugly notification bubble that is unnecessary and ugly. I want to see my wallpaper not that. I understand knowyourdrive probably has to declare that they are tracking you, but there should be an option in settings to turn that off. I downloaded the app so I know it's there. 5 stars if this is FIXED.
It records most of my driving as if I am walking or as a passenger. When it does record my driving with me as a driver, it indicates acceleration -yet this is safe acceleration to merge into traffic. It also says I had distracted driving when I absolutely was not using my phone. It is a very poor app. Update - on last drive, was alone, did not touch my phone, yet it said that I had distracted driving the entire time. Has stopped recording trips (again). Un-installing & re-installing for 3rd time
So far so bad. I really don't want the icon on my phone all the time and they don't seem to be responding to emails on how to do anything about it. Driving statistics don't seem quite accurate either. Two weeks and still no response. Now my phone got hacked because this app asks so many permissions. Uninstalling until the respond and fix the flaws
It takes a bit to figure this out,.It always says hard brake unless you've done something else like accelerate, look for red dots on map, they will tell you where it happened. One drive isn't going to affect your discount, it's the accumulation, and it's better since you can remove a drive if needed, (son keeps calling until you think it's an emergency just to tell you "we are out of milk.") so you don't ruin your streak.
Having this app on my phone is great! It helps me remember not to touch my phone while driving. My husband and I are in a little competition on who can get the highest discount LOL This app should be mandatory for everyone as part of insurance. Thank you American family for helping to keep my family and others out on the roads are a little safer.
I started going back to work and it stopped tracking my trips. I've tried reinstalling the app and going through the FAQ page and it still isn't recording my drives.
There is no option to edit a trip if you are the driver but the passenger uses your phone to look something up or send a text, etc.
I like having the app watch my driving. It definitely makes me aware of what I'm doing and how I'm doing it. but I had a car blow the stop sign and turn in front of me like the police were chasing him and I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting him and when I got home it said I had hit my brakes hard and It was being held against me . I kept my car from being wrecked by stopping fast. you win some lose some but it definitely keeps me aware of how I'm driving and that's a good thing.
Uninstalled/reinstalled this app countless times. Every time, it will track drives for a few days, then stops. I'm opening the app every drive and it does NOTHING
Inaccurate and a power suck. Hard brake threshold hilariously low, run the red or get a braking ding. Jumps to access roads from main road causing speeding dings. Sucks power hard, cut my battery life in half.
Says i was "distracted" during 2 of my recent trips but my phone was in the passenger seat under my purse! This app is so stupid and it's making me pay more because it's faulty!
🚙Its very beneficial to me not only for the big 💵discounts but it also helps my driving and 😌 relieves me from checking my📱phone so often. I would highly recommend it to all American Family Insurance auto customers.👍
Pathetic! Keeps falsely flagging me for "speeding" a lot more lately, for some reason! Why is this is so badly coded or improperly calibrated or whatever? Maybe... shoulda made sure it works before going live? Just a thought
Waste of time, now they'll have a data set based on your driving(which they will sell it in the future!) You spend more money powering the app then you will save.
Great app to help with a discount however I've had trouble looking at the app and it freezing up. I just reinstalled it. hopefully it's better now
it's pretty good for giving discount, EXCEPT for the Hard Brakes sensor. it's way too touchy.
My experience is Im feeling confident because this program not only allows me to drive safer , it encourages me to be a better person overall , also I can save money while Im driving. Thank you AM FAM INS
The app worked great for the first few months but now it suggests I'm a rapid accelerator when I literally don't own a car capable of accelerating to 60 mph in under 12 seconds. I can only assume the bug has something to do with poor connectivity and algorithmic compensation. If I'm going to be monitored by software for a discount then the software should be accurate, not a further source of frustration.
App randomly stopped logging my drives. Went from a Galaxy S10 (where it worked fine) to a Galaxy S22 Ultra and it randomly stopped logging. Tried reinstalling, location is on, permissions are OK, but it was of no use. The maps it uses for speed tracking are also horribly out of date. There's a road in my area where the speed limit is 55, but anything over 30 flags you for speeding. I wish they'd just link it to Google Maps (which isn't perfect either, but much better than the status quo).
Obviously I like getting the extra discount, but the app definitely has flaws. You need to make sure to check it every few days to make sure it logs you correctly as driver or passenger. Also, although individual trips don't show any acceleration for me, the overall picture shows acceleration at the max (way above program average). That just started happening in the last few weeks.
I've been using the app for about a year now, and it's not great. My system logs say it's a battery drain, and it's horrible at guessing when you're a driver or a passenger. You only have a few days to correct each trip, so if you forget, there goes your safe driving record. And, ultimately, the 10% savings isn't very much money. Given the effort it takes to moderate your own driving report, the battery drain, and the privacy implications, KYD doesn't seem worth it for a few measley bucks.
Can't even own the damn app after having to Uninstall and reinstall several times as it stops working all the time
Great app but, it's gonna get you killed while you are doing the speed limit and everyone else is speeding!!
I had Progressive with their stupid snapshot device it messed with the electrical system in my car so I thought this would be a great alternative you know what I find very ironic and annoying they are keeping track of whether you use your phone when you're driving or not and you have to turn your phone on to use it I don't turn my phone on when I'm driving!!! it cost me money in the long run but it's not worth it trip reviews inaccurate emails texts annoying Agent no help Absolutely hated it
Terrible app. Always shows in your notifications, slow to open and move around in app, that is if you can even get into it, terrible gps tracking. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I got hit with high speed, fast acceleration, hard breaking, and a distraction by simply taking my foot off the break and going down to the end of a road. Don't worry you can fix that by editing your trips right? Yea I haven't been able to edit trips for the past two weeks, app doesn't even open past a white screen.
The amount of work it takes to get accurate recoding of trips is staggering. Trip removal is great, but that ruins the distraction free record. I've recalibrated the GPS on my phone multiple times and it still says that I'm speeding on the outer road, (55 mph) when I'm obviously on an interstate highway, (70 mph). This bug is 100% duplicatable. It shows me leaving and entering the highway, where there is no road. Last update didn't fix the Acceleration. It's stuck at 100% on multiple devices.
Doesn't work!!! I have re-installed 3 times, I have done all the troubleshooting things, checked the settings, etc. Customer support was pointless. It will not track my drives. I can read about distraction tips and safe driving recommendations off the app, but it will not do what it was designed to do...track drives and give me discounts. Waste of battery usage and space on my phone.
Seems to work fine except I don't like that it's always running in the background and consuming lots of battery life, even when not driving. It doesn't work on permissions of granting access by asking each time either. It only works if access is granted 100% of the time. I also am not sure if using GPS is being counted as distracted or not.
