I thought I was in for some ground breaking new method of learning languages. Instead, this just feels like a watered-down, slower, clumsier version of Duolingo. For example, when speaking to the microphone, it works slow, and I lose patience. In Duolingo it works quickly and I can run through it. Another example: spelling of the words by clicking individual letters. I doubt that's necessary at this stage, when what I want is vocabulary and grammar, to start spelling. Also, Duolingo is free.
It could be better. If you exit the app and continue the lesson later it doesn't let you correct your errors from the previous session before you exited. It's also very annoying that if you switch between apps while you are 'fixing errors', the app goes back to the course home screen and you cannot continue to fix your errors, unless you redo the whole lesson. It would also be good to be able to resume fixing your errors after you leave the app. Better than Duo lingo but it needs work
Great App!!! What i like the most after using it over a year is that they always introduce new features. I would like to make a suggestion that you make something like a self contest like a fun way to test our skills, for example how many sentences in listining mode we can catch for a limited time...or something like that 😊 keep on with the great work!
I just started learning, but so far its a great help! It allows you to go back and correct your mistakes until you have it down, not to mention it allows you to repeat lessons in order to really learn the material! I love that they switch between men and woman speakers too, it gives the learner a chance to hear how different people say it.
I find this a great app to learn from. It sets a sure foundation from which to develope and grow in a new language, especially if you have never been exposed to it before. It has helped me alot, and still does. It covers a vast array of fields and helps build the confidence needed to push through...for I tell you, learning a foreign language is NOT easy. Babbel helps break some boundaries. 😁
Very pleased, makes the learning relatively easy. I was concerned that there was no actual grammar presented, then shortly after that, they started showing verb conjugations! This program is really great. I also recommend Drops. It is a vocabulary building app that is short and sweet to use.
The app is excellent. Each lesson is short enough with an typical length of about 10 minutes. Between lessons there is always a review that includes all the vocabulary you have already learned. Takes about 3 minutes. Every word has a proficiency rating and that gets incremened when you answer a review question correctly. Words that you have a high proficiency are not reviewed as often. Audio and voice recognition allow you to perfect speaking. Typing with optional accents strengthens spelling.
Wanted something to improve my German. Despite choosing advanced and getting a perfect score, bumps me to basic greetings and numbers (I suspect because I didn't choose a subscription.) Also, the voice recognition is abysmal. I gave up and turned it off after it couldn't recognize "Ich bin Sandra" and "Wie geht's" after about 30 tries each and in different ways. This left me just listening to a woman talking at me. Uninstalled.
I love this app, you can pick how you want to review what you've learned, and it is quite fun to use. I would prefer a section to review the verbs and their conjugations, and grammatical rules, just like the section to review vocabulary below the review tab. German grammar is fairly complex. However, it's still a great app to get you going on your language learning, and to get you to start speaking.
This app is great, i have used it for a while now and although my motivation isnt great the app is always there if i need it. As soln as you finish a sub course you get new vocab to use and new reviews as well and if needs be you can go back to a course if you need to refresh. Its easy accessible as well and can be used on the go, even if its only for 5 mins or so to use
A well crafted app that feels relatively close to what you would get out of a course. The content is well written. The grammar explanations are clear. The exercises are challenging. I only have one small complaint, which is that the in-app keyboard is kind of clunky and unresponsive. Other than that, the app is perfect as far as I'm concerned.
Overall, a great app but there is one huge drawback - the method of writing the answers in german. The spelling of the words is laid out before my eyes and I just have to click the letters in the right order. This does not help with learning as much and is a bit annoying. Can you please please provide an option to write all answers with a keyboard at all times in this mobile app? :)
Totally worth the price, it works 100 times better than Drops or Duolingo. They make you repeat the stuff you learn in a way that makes it stick to your brain. Nice way to explain grammar as well. The 5th star is missing because the audio part has bugs, sometimes. But overall it's awesome.
Not Free, that's for sure. it's a good app, but how is someone suppose to learn German with just two courses?! Definitely uninstalling the app. Response: It would not let me continue past the first 2 courses. It asked for access wich means a payment method. The app is great, i love that it lets me review and the conversations are very helpful, but if I want to go past the Newcomer course ' Access' is needed. I just couldn't get to the other first lessons of each course without access.
I've used babble for a few years now and always made fairly good progress. Recently however I've found I can only use the lessons with internet connection. This is really annoying. It does this even when I've already downloaded my next lesson. Why did you change the way it works? It was brilliant before. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. It doesn't motivate me to continue learning. Not very happy. Thinking of cancelling my subscription. Sorry Babbel!
I think it's not fair to spend only 10min on learning the most basic stuff, like: "how are you doing" and afterwards having to pay €6.50 at least in order to progress with the next beginner course. At least let the beginner courses be free and pay for the rest. Too bad this is not applied. Personally it does not invite me to use this app.
I've used duo lingo for years to learn the basics in a few languages. I always thought it was great, but with a trip to Germany coming up I decided to see if there are options to learn faster. Enter Babbel. Every lesson so far has gone straight from learning words to using them in a conversation, and writing them so the spelling is ingrained from early on. Yes, it costs... but so far it's worth every penny. I really wish I'd tried this app when I was studying Swedish.
This is probably one of the best apps to learn German on the go. The structure is really clear and helps you learn the language step-by-step. It has difficulty level from absolute beginners up to an intermediate and even advanced lessons. Great work guys, thank you for this app!
Babbel is very helpful, easy to use and understand. It's informative, not just with the language, but with the social aspects and nuances of everyday conversations. It is perfect for beginners starting to learn, or people who want to to improve upon another language that they already have some experience with.
not helpful...jumps right in to vocab words without teaching sentence structure or other major concepts first. you are left trying to make sense of sentences that are confusing without being told why. major things like gendered nouns, gendered articles, and different sentence structure are needed first to build a solid fluency upon. the major structural grammatical concepts which differ so much from English are only brought up in brief passing as quick tips! its a no from me.
The learning experience is very similar to the classes i previously had. And with the review section, i can say it is even better. I highly recommended it to my close friends and they love it. I hope you develop advanced courses to keep learning.
Good app, but too heavy focus on grammar before you've even learned the basics. Several lessons into German, I am forced to wade through alien concepts to me such as conjugated verbs, imperative forms etc without any actual explanation of what these are, yet I still don't know what any of the joiner words are such as "are", "on", "by" etc.
The interface is pretty intuitive, and the site is layed out well. I like the little pop up language rules. It's also cool that you can go back, and correct the mistakes you made. It reinforces what you may have missed the first time. It's the first time I've attempted to learn a new language (outside of high school), and am surprised at how fun it is. It just feels like playing a video game.
The app is getting better and learning is way easier than before. Especially the listening review. I just wish there will be a search translation function in the vocabulary words. Would be easier to lookup for words that a student is trying to remember.
Good lessons and structure but the in-app keyboard is very clunky and leads to some frustrating moments. Biggest issue for me is the app does not open at all when offline, it stays on the splash screen indefinitely. I'm a paid user and Babbel claims to work offline so this is very dissapointing.
Very enjoyable way to learn, at my own pace.I like the notes about some of the peculiarities of the German language and culture, which are informative and interesting. I like being able to switch and try other languages as well, to help decide which one next.
The lessons have a good pace, not too much information to remember in one go. Coupled with a few other language apps you should see pretty fast progress if you are a native English speaker. I do however think that it could do with a recap of all the lessons that have been completed, I sometimes find my self having doubts about certain rules.
