This had been a 5 star app for me, but the sound quality seems to be buggy now and it cuts out half the time, and almost always ends in staticky noises. Its frustrating since I have payed for it, and I had been worried that my phone's speakers were failing. But this is the only app that is making the crackling noises while it is vocalizing. Honestly, If that was fixed I'd be pretty happy.
Don't install this app unless you're ready to start on it IMMEDIATELY. It constantly harasses with notifications you can not turn off till going through the excessively long intro. I use and have tried a lot of different language apps. The setup on this one really needs reworking. I finally uninstalled to stop the lame prompting. Maybe I'll try it again in a few months, but there are definitely plenty of other alternatives with a better interface.
I enjoy this app, been using it for many years. can pick it up whenever I am ready and learn at my own pace. Not only have I been learning Japanese for 100's of hours, but I can also study any language where I might want to use wherever I travel. It gives you agm good, varied and effective way to be able to speak and understand another language. Even allowing you to learn in the language's own symbol systems, if you want to do that, too! I upgraded to premium and it has been well worth it!
I think it's very well done. I wanted something for my phone & user friendly, Mondly is. Very effective in training your ear. Review is blended well with new material. I also like that you can bounce around and dive in to so many different areas. However, lessons can be overwhelming, grammar & structure not explained, demanding rote memorization. Early requests to translate full sentense, in writing, English=Japanese. Seriously?? Repetition & daily use is key. Star ratings vs other users is BS.
well, I think the development of this app could be worse, but also way better. I go from simple imagery matching to conjugated sentences without an introduction of any kind. the idea of trial and error is definitely visible here, but error over and over again does not help learning a language when you first start. I have experience learning languages as I have learned Chinese and Spanish. I self taught myself Chinese, and had a teacher for Spanish and neither was trial and error so constant.
Interesting app. I don't like the lesson structure. It seems to jump all over the place. There are a few simple lessons for beginners, then when you go to do speaking lessons, they teach things that were never discussed or taught. I wish there was a more gradual progression with the language for true beginners. Also, it doesn't go over katakana, hiragana, or Kanji but expects you to translate the sentences. Or, you can switch to romanji but that is never recommended by Japanese.
I love this app, it's great and I've been using it for a while to do daily lessons & I add random weekly and monthly challenges to keep me on my toes but SO OFTEN after spending a significant amount of time doing a monthly challenge I don't get credited the points so it's all for nothing. Now I have to slalom through the monthly quizzes to avoid ones I don't get credits for completing. I've reported bugs repeatedly but I never get a response nor does the problem get resolved. Come on Mondly.
I love that they take something so complicated and they split it up into manageable chunks to allow you to get your head around it. Makes it a little simpler. It has many options when it comes to answering quizzes. You can use kanji, you can have it shown in romanji or if you think you know how to say it you can do it that way which really let's you practice speaking it.
I think this will actually work for me. I've tried so many apps in the past, but this is about putting sentences together and becoming fluent. The conjugation goes right alongside phrases and vocabulary building. Conjugation and sentence structure is what is usually lacking on apps, but this is great. I'll be upgrading to premium soon. I wonder what helpful tools there are. Good job, team! Thanks. I'll write my next review in japanese lol!
I'm a veteran of language learning apps for Japanese, because I need to learn and don't live anywhere I could go for more formal classes. The truth is, none of them is perfect. Mondly is good for teaching you everyday vocabulary and grammar, and is mostly easy to use and fun. It falls down occasionally on the chatbot, and I've located occasional errors, but the fact I can identify the errors suggests I'm making progress, so... Better than DuoLingo, and probably on a par with Busuu.
Very true to description: learn short phrases with 5 minutes of practice daily. The basic lessons can be repeated every day a new lesson is available all day. Presented uniquely for easy learning however not enough content to learn the whole language. For that you have to pay. However there is an a great feature that allows you to converse to practice your speech. This app is great addition to use with a language class or another program.
Still barely beginning, using free variation of app, but the layout and way it's lessons are set up certainly helps visualize while hearing the language to pronounce properly. I espesially enjoy the choice of letter styling, for now I'm using the latin version but plan to go back through with each lesson and continue learning to understand and eventually speak Japanese. I have been wanting to learn for over 25yrs, it's amazing technology has taken us from Muggy vhs to something like this app.
I went Premium, but it isn't really worth it. There is no sensible progression through the lesson topics. You are expected to pick up Kanji after seeing it once, or not at all in some cases. It presents an entire sentence with Kanji that you've not been exposed to and expects you to reconstruct the sentence. Same with vocab. It isn't taught entirely. It's sporadic. Furthermore, the voice recognition is rough at times. Save your money. I won't renew.
I honestly like the app, the interaction and chatbot at least sharpens my pronunciation and conversation experience. I have no qualms with how they help you learn BUT- BUT after finishing one lesson or so, EVERYTHING ELSE MUST BE PAID FOR. I can live with pop-ups appearing and telling me to go premium every lesson but, to NOT have access to basically everything else is just bad. Most people can't afford it. I'm just gonna finish my remaining lessons and uninstall it since it's basically useless.
I have a major issue. Why is the only choice: romaji or kanji? Why not kana? With only kanji, I don't have the chance to know how to pronounce the kanji. And anyone that knows anything about learning Japanese knows that romaji should be abandoned immediately. The function of the app seems to be good, but I will need to continue with the trial for a little longer. Edit: You lose another star because even though notifications are turned off in app, you still send pop notifications.
Great even for free. Obviously paid gets you more content, but if you just casually want to dabble in learning a new language this app is great. If you're taking a class or about you travel, get the paid version. If you're like me and want to spend 5 min a day on a new language, the free version is perfect for you!
Good app to use. However, the week 52 isn't showing up so that I can do the monthly quiz for January. I've done every quiz since mid November and this is the 1st month quiz that is bugging out. Currently using on a Samsung tablet.
the microphone crashes the app, some lazy programming, e.g. just displays a list of verb conjugations when clicking verb. Also some poor translations, here's 2 i got wrong: roshiago ('Russian', wrong because no capital 'R'!) 'E, yuko wakarimasu' apparently means 'Yes, i understand *her* well' ?? Not really! Just noticed some words when clicked show Mandarin translation instead of Japanese: 'interested' == 'xing wei'??? Verb conjugations for 'Come' is entitled 'lai/lairu', more Chinese?
Just started testing it out. It is more like a grammar drill than the simple one-off sentence translation one finds on Duolingo, which I plan to go on using. I am looking for simple "N5" vocabulary *with* the kanji so I can get used to seeing and recognizing the kanji. This app looks promising in that respect. A little furigana might help, though, not just romaji.
Really learning a fair deal, I've come a long way in 4 days at my own pace. Would absolutely recommend. However it could do with some sort of function to explain sentence structure etc. It's possible this comes further down the line and I'm getting ahead of myself... But yeah.
Very annoying mistakes. In Japanese 私たちand 私達 are interchangeable and it is not a mistake to use either one. This app has random questions where they use either version but if answer doesn't match it is also randomly considered as a mistake. The very situation is with ください or 下さい。 Also random use of choices and randomly considered as a mistake. Instead of focusing on learning I am playing game if I use version of the word matching answer. I paid for full version more than 55 dollars
The way it was teaching was good, but the sound only worked about half the time; which for a language learning app you need sound. It also doesn't start with basic things like sentance structures. Otherwise decent app.
The 'Check' button is not responding to touch after the sep 2021 update, as a result there is no way to proceed to next question. It can be easily reproduced on my Pixel 5 as well as ChromeOS. Great app and have been using for years, but please do some basic QA before releasing...
Buggy translations (voice not matching text which also does not match the English translation), chat bot is unusable (doesn't "understand" a phrase I say and I can't use alternative phrases that would be typical of the context). Better than duolingo since it isn't constantly trying to train me on hiragana and katakana and isn't reteaching me things i already knew over and over
Good only for the daily lessons. Premium is not worth it. For example in premium only Core vocabulary lesson 3 they want from you to translate word "Wakarimasen" but they will not tell you beforehand what it means so you will have to guess... So it seems like they expect you to use a vocabulary alongside the app??Makes no sense for me.
I was lured to take the free trial. When I realized there was no way to cancel manually I contacted support and was led to understand I wouldn't be charged. I was charged today! Very deceptive. While I did enjoy using the app I wasn't willing to pay the fee for its use at this time. Good luck getting your money back. They will insist you were never charged after telling you they refunded the money. SCAM ***BEWARE OF FREE TRIAL ***STILL NO REFUND
The hello category and the daily lesson are great and the chat box is good too but the app is so dependent on upgrading to a higher status to be able to continue, I might have to uninstall because there's no way to progress, even with the chat box you can only get one category.
