Learning Japanese

Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese now available in Google Play!
IMPORTANT :The latest update is a bug fix for tablet layout being wrongly used in phone and crashing when navigating. Those who have update to version 0.3.1 and are having the problem, please update. I'm sorry about the inconvenience.

Topics covered include:

- The Japanese Writing System (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji)
- Basic Japanese Grammar (Particles, Adjective, Verbs, Nouns)
- Essential Japanese Grammar (Polite Forms, Compound, Conditionals, etc.)
- Special Expressions (Causative, Amounts, Honorific, etc.)
- Advanced Topics (Formal Expressions, Volitional, etc.)

This guide was created as a resource for those who want to learn Japanese grammar in a rational, intuitive way that makes sense in Japanese. The explanations are focused on how to make sense of the grammar not from English but from a Japanese point of view.

This guide is an attempt to systematically build up the grammatical structures that make up the Japanese language in a way that makes sense in Japanese. It may not be a practical tool for quickly learning immediately usable phrases such as for travel. However, it will logically create successive building blocks that will result in a solid grammatical foundation. For those of you who have learned Japanese from textbooks, you may see some big differences in how the material is ordered and presented. This is because this guide does not seek to forcibly create artificial ties between English and Japanese by presenting the material in a way that makes sense in English. Instead, examples with translations will show how ideas are expressed in Japanese resulting in simpler explanations that are easier to understand.

Like a concise grammar guide in your pocket, I really love it, at first I thought it'll be hard since I'm not a native English speaker but no worries in that matter. But one problem, I dont know if it's only on my phone, but the bookmark doesn't work. I tried so many times, it keeps only saving my one bookmark I did from a long time ago, even after I deleted that. And all my newer bookmarks were just gone. Any help will be appreciated.

Has some amazing content and is super helpful! only issue seems to be, only after a few days of having it, every time i open the app, everything is zoomed in ridiculously and i can't zoom out- it just stays like that... i see from other reviews that the app hasn't been maintained for a while so i'm going to keep my review at 3* (even if it does have quality material, there's no point if the experience isn't up to scratch)

An Android port of a great definitive guide on Japanese grammar. I expect this material to help me immensely, even if it turns out later that the language itself is not only about grammar rules, but also lots of practical speech patterns. Several scrolling bugs encountered though: sometimes either position is reset to beginning of the chapter or the entire app hangs up, forcing me to stop the process via system ui. I think it might be caused by switching between apps, among other things.

This is not your typical language learning app. It's not fun or cutesy, there are no games that hold your hand to teach you basic phrases. This app is for people who take learning Japanese seriously. The lessons are in an easy to follow text book style format, and I highly recommend taking notes. All of the content is available from the start, so there's no testing out or unlocking the next lesson. You go at your own pace, and what you get out of it is what you put in.

Definitely recommended for beginners who have started learning Japanese grammar. This grammar guide is quite different from your average Grammar textbook which is filled with unnecessary rules. It begins with explaining the core foundations of Japanese grammar and then journeys through the advanced topics. Though not everyone will like the structure of this guide, it will benefit you a lot. Also, don't forget to turn on the dark mode it looks cool :)

This "app" is a godsend. Really it's just an extremely coherent pocket guide to Japanese grammar, but it's exactly what i needed. For a serious learner, I recommend spending a month or two intensively studying Japanese on Duolingo before opening this app for the first time, because by that point you will have a ton of all the right questions bouncing through your mind about what you've been practicing, and this guide will help all those puzzle pieces fall into place.

Good app with one major flaw. As much as I understand the need to understand the kanji earlier on, the links in the exercise sections no longer actually work. And seeing as there are multiple readings, it's a struggle to find the right one. Please update the links for the kanji on the exercise pages. Things such as 人 and 大. I have 0 idea which reading is needed, which pronunciation to use and no idea for their meanings.

Most Japanese language apps don't teach grammar correctly. This app is essential if you ever want to grasp the subtleties of 日本語 grammar. Don't trust Duolingo and it's conflated explanations, trust this app. Learning grammatical and syntactical logic as well as Kanji is far more important in the long run. Speaking a language requires that one be able to think in that language. That's exactly what this app does.

Great port of one of the best Japanese grammar guides out there. My only issue is that if you put your device to sleep mid-lesson, when you return it will start at the beginning, which can make reading some of the longer chapters a bit more tedious.

This is one of the best self study apps out there for somebody beginning to learn Japanese or an intermediate learner looking to sharpen up their skills! Very well put together and full of great information! I used this app when I first started out my language learning journey and I now live in Japan. 10/10

Great app. Works fine, but the only two bugs I've found was the bookmarks, which doesn't seem to be working properly and the kanji writting, that sends to a blank page. With the aside this app is greatly recommended.

This app has everything you need to learn Japanese grammar! This is what I have been looking for. Everything is broken down into simple lessons and practice exercises with great sample sentences.

truly wonderful method of teaching different from what I have experienced from other teaching apps. He made Japanese not lively but logically makes sense to learn. I adapt this kind of learning way faster than other ways. He really knows how learning works.

Given that it is free, I neglect the differences you can spot with professional (and non-free) app. I like the approach of the author. Combined with Akebi, an app non related to Learning Japanese, it becomes a very useful app

I love this app a lot! The exercises are really useful for understanding the explanations, though I don't seem to find any more exercises from lesson 7 on.

Pretty good content! Bit dark and gloomy on the presentation side, but the grammar explanations are the real deal. Very professional.

Tae Kim's jp guide will get you through japanese grammar so you can at the end learn on your own from source. Top tier material, and example-heavy course which is how a language should be learned. I'd advise fresh new learners to first learn hiragana/katakana, and if Tae Kim is getting difficult too fast, start with the Japanese From Zero video series - these introduced me gently to japanese grammar and made me transition from romaji reading to hira/kata.

It's a handy app, but not the most user friendly. It could do with updating to support page navigation through swiping.

I have discovered a bug, I zoomed in and dropped my phone, so now its permanently zoomed in. I'm going to delete the app and reinstall it to see if that fixes the problem.

So far, it's really good. The person behind this explains it so well, and explains a lot of really useful stuff too. I always have a hard time knowing what grammar to learn next, but this will help a lot.

Really good app and amazing content. Personally I experience some scrolling bugs but that's essentially the extent of the issues I've encountered.

Ant. A. Mar 29, 2020

Seemed like a good app. Unfortunately after zooming in to check something I was unable to zoom back out (there being no settings or any kind of help) have uninstalled now as it is completely useless and unusable

Amazingly explained grammar! Thank you! Also a side note: on night mode the practice answers are darker than the background and can be seen.

its almost perfect...why? because it sets a foundation and builds on it. It remaps my English brain to think in Japanese. Thats why. one things missing
