This app and the Lego set (17101) is amazing! Unfortunately, for it to work on newer devices, you need to do these steps: 1) Make sure the hub is off 2) Open any build 3) When it says "Press the green button on the move hub", don't press it. Instead, hold it until the light starts flashing "Red, Green, Blue". 4) Press "OK" 5) Enjoy!
Another issue with a keyboard, which has been arouse previously. Lego has been known as one of the best presents ever, however, looks like you guys need to overthink the general approach to the quality of the software development and testing in the contemporary world. Cannot see the possible reason for such bugs to get into production. P.S. Btw, the link you attach to every feedback (lego.build/...) doesn't solve issues as well.
Very difficult to get it to work because this app has a lot of bugs, such as it does not connect to Bluetooth or asks you to connect external motor when it is already connected. I managed to connect via Bluetooth by installing another Lego app "Lego Powered Up" and somehow got everything else to work. Otherwise, once you get it to work, its very interesting for kids.
Although the lego set is great and has huge potential the app makes experience really poor. I don't understand how it is possible that opensouce python library connects with the move hub device without any issues and every time when my kid connects through the tablet it is a lottery once it works another time it does not. It is combination of turning bluetooth on/off restating the app etc. I am totally disapointted by this app. You should not sell this product if the app is not working on most of Android devices. No one uses devices from your compatibility list. Devices there are 7 years old and are mostly not supported and not secure.
It won't connect. The app gets as far as connecting the move hub to the tablet. The light on the move hub flashes white and then turns blue (which looks to me like it's connected) but the app doesn't move on to the next stage. As this is right at the beginning we can't even access the building instructions for the robot. A complete waste of over a hundred pounds! We tried the uninstalling and reinstall advise given to others but that didn't work. Same issue using laptop and phone.
Edit: it's been 3 months already and not a single update to fix the freezing issue. This is utterly frustrating. After many trials and erros, I was able to connect to the Move Hub after holding the button for 10 seconds for firmware update. This is not explained anywhere. But the app keeps freezing every time I exit a card. Because some builds have many cards, it gets really frustrating having to use this app. Also, it is impossible to open a canvas, the apps simply freezes completely.
The look and feel is nice for the kids. But it keeps forgetting progress. So we keep having to go through all the previous steps to get back to where we were. Including connecting the hub, holding the robot in the air while redoing all the moves we HAVE to complete. There is no way to skip that i could find. It takes forever. Plus all the animations unlocking all the steps. It is very frustrating. Edit: changed up with this new information about the long press! Thank you!
We bought our son this lego robot for christmas thinking that it would be a great introduction to programming. Unfortunately it has been incredibly frustrating for all of us because the app is constantly crashing or malfunctioning. I finally got fed up and cleaned up our kindle fire then reinstalled the app. For the first 5 minutes it worked again, but once again the programming is malfunctioning. Even when we do exactly what it says all of the command lines play at the same time.
The Lego Boost system was excellent for my 8-year old to construct the model from directions (He choose Vernie) and then, after an easy app install, he and my older son enjoyed much more than one afternoon exploring how it worked, using the coding via IPad app, and even making a short movie involving Vernie. I highly recommend it - it's fun for all children. As an educational tool it has some merit, but as I've seen with my own children, it is easy to just focus on the "bells and whistles" of what it can do versus delving deeper into the coding. In that area I would appreciate more guidance (lesson plans, online challenges, etc.).
Frustrating user interface, lack of explanatory text, progress very slow due to crashes and hangs. Worst bug, when you exit an activity all buttons remain greyed out, the red back button does not appear and the user cannot do anything except force close the app and restart. Not ideal for the trial and error approach forced by the lack of explanation! Thanks for the response but your list of tested devices is extremely short, perhaps you could look into testing on a wider range of devices.
Update 2021-10-25 After updating the firmware (found via Internet search), we were able to get the Move Hub connected and operating. There could have been pointers to firmware updating either in the app itself or via the links provided on the box (the "device check" information). There are still other issues with the Android application. For example NO keyboard input is possible. No software keyboard, and I tried 2 other hardware keyboards (which work with other apps), all to no avail. The app store version (Apple) does not have these issues. The app is pretty good once connectivity is established, but from an end-user perspective it could still improve. The motor movements are somewhat jumpy. Perhaps my evaluation will improve as we explore the app more. ORIGINAL Like other users comment, connecting to the move hub was not possible. I'm sure customer service will help but it's Sunday now... I suspect this app was made for Apple, while Android users are 2nd class, at least that's what ratings indicate.
Updated Review: the app is good but recommend you turn on your bluetooth BEFORE you start. The app controls won't work or start decently if you do not cut that on first. The instructions are illustrated, but the angles can be a little off on showing the right placement for some blocks. Otherwise, the app does what it's suppose to do and connects with the motor hub just fine.
Had an overall good experience, but the app stoped working, it can't download some file, reinstalling doesn't help, the dance with all cache clearing and restarting doesn't work either. The phone is definitely compatible since it worked before, and plenty of free storage. Also I experienced sync issues between the phone and the iPad, progress was synced, but discovered elements didn't appear in the free programming mode and there was no way to get them even going through all the levels again
Update. So I have done all the troubleshooting, and made sure everything was compatible. BUT it seems that the app no longer connects to the device. In fact, half the time it does not even see it in the list to connect to. This happened after the 1.9.5 update. So, it is with much sadness I must say that while this toy was great for 3 or 4 months and worked perfectly, it simply does not work with the app anymore. The new hub and old hub are both not connecting. Update. Lego provided us with a new hub motor. it works much better. the bluetooth connection is a little weak still only going 15 or 20 feet but this is a great toy...and it connects correctly. we mist have gotten a one off the first go round. original: will not connect to hub motor correctly. constantly crashes. brand new phone.
LEGO Boost is really fun and motivated my love for coding, programming, robotics, and engineering. But sometimes, on the coding screen, I try to find out the controls but the screen that says how it works ends up shaking non stop and is not able to be Interpreted. Also, not all of the commands I put in seem to work. It is still fun, but it gets aggravating.
The tablet version of the application got broken with the latest update; the action tiles are showing black squares, making the application completely useless. Please fix the issue, and improve the overall user experience (it is slow sometimes, and hangs often). This app could be (and should be) an excellent addition to Lego Boost toy.
On my tablet the app freezes everytime when it's loading. I have to close the app and restart it. But then, same issue again and again. So I can't use the app at all. On my smartphone, when trying to log in I have to do the little math, but the keyboard doesn't pop up. Unfortunately my children can't play with it at all. Sad
Doesn't work. Keyboard doesn't come up when you try and login or register. Will not connect to the lego Move hub. Saw in previous reviews the lego team was trying to fix it over a month ago. I figured they would have it fixed already. Must be to difficult to figure out for them. Kids were pretty disappointed especially after I packed it up to send back.
A great concept and my daughter enjoys building and trying the different models. However, better help on what each function does is needed. The app also forces you to work through everything before giving access to all functions, which is annoying if you want to experiment outside of this. The main problems are: 1) App doesn't connect to the boost hub when using it from a restricted profile (i.e. a childs profile). 2) It frequently refuses to connect requiring restart of the app.
It would be a very good app and great value for money, but it has have a known bug, what not has been relsoved by the developers for years: when clicking login button, the keyboard not popping up and not able to solve the simple math problem. It results that the accounts cannot be created on random kind of devices: on my brand new, very popular Samsung A7 lite tablet the problem persists (what is unacceptable), but works with my older mobile.
The idea is very nice, but 380Mb app is too much. And than it downloads some "additional file" even longer. Tried to install it on new tablet for 5 times already - every time process interrupts on some stage. The good side are instructions included, different models with different complexity, a lot of fun throwing those little characters or shooting somewhere. More manual control would be handy. More speed - at least the same speed as in prog. mode. External controller support would be awesome.
Bad start, but working now. Had to upgrade firmware through the lego power up app, and talk to support. Cables were switched and app is finally running as it should. I would have expected better help articles online, since now I've lost a lot of time experiencing frustration and having to wait over the weekend for support availability.
Great concept, average execution. Not very intuitive and lacks basic instructions/tool tips/visual clues on the functionality of the app itself. The interface is riddled with minor bugs and quirky behaviour. One of the most annoying being the difficulty activating the play/action sequence. Where's the app exit button? User should also be allowed to progress without connecting to the bot. The lego set itself is, on the other hand, out of this world. Great idea and execution for the set.
