Light Meter

A reflected light meter with spot metering (using the device's camera) and an incident light meter (using the device's light sensor) in one app. Tested accurate against Gossen and Sekonic meters on most devices.

Download the free version first to see if the app works on your device, email me if you have any issues.

Can be used for any type of camera from film SLR to pinhole to cinematographic.

In addition to the two meters, the app includes a Sunny Sixteen calculator, and Depth of Field calculator, and a EXIF Reader.

Works pretty well. I've been using this for about 2 years now and on two different phones. It seems to be fairly accurate in bright - low light situations. It doesn't work super well for night shots though, but good enough. I have noticed that it gives different reading from my cameras light meters (Nikon FG20 and a Canon F1) but I've tested it and neither are wrong.

Fantastic. Really useful. My phone is about 0.5 of a stop off. Would be great to have a separate calibration setting, so that the plus/minus correction could just be used for working out placing the image in a particular zone etc, but hardly any inconvenience as is. A great app, love the spot meter zoomed in - super accurate. Other thoughts: if it could perform a screen grab to act as a reference, that would be cool for image review. Thank you for your work on this.

I feel like the spot metering isn't working for me on my Samsung Galaxy S8. I've tested it with high contrast lighting and it didn't show any change in Ev or other settings. Granted, I just started out with film photography, so I don't know much and hoped to find a cheap app to help me get the right exposure. Not sure how my pictures turned out yet. Edit: newest update does not fix the spot metering issue

Not accurate on Moto G6. Off by about 3 stops when compared to LunaPro SBC. But it can be calibrated to counteract the error. Incident seems to be fairly correct. Spot is erratic and slow to respond. At one point I moved the spot from light to dark area and the EV value went up! Too bad as the concept is good and the app is well designed from a usability standpoint. Too late to get my money back. The improve this app I would display all combinations of shutter speed and aperture simultaneously.

App worked well after one photoshoot and it stopped functioning. The sensor feature stopped functioning after a single photoshoot (that's the function that I purchased the app for). I uninstall and reinstall the app to no avail. When it worked it was very accurate and it gave me great exposure settings. Oh, well you get what you pay for. **Response: it's just not reading

The added features are good the problem is the spot meter. It is uncalibratable due to the reading response being a non-linear regression... the readings are all over the place when compared to a Sekonic meter or an app I've used for years (a vintage looking meter app). Its a shame as that app work well but is lite on functions that this app has. If only this was as good as that one it would be hands down better but nope this one is pretty worthless as it stands now.

Not working well for me, probably two stops short of proper exposure in an experiment I am trying to do. Not sure if it's confused in low light, or needs a manual to explain how to use it. Admittedly, I am new to light meters, but I pointed the screen side of the phone towards the light, and parallel to the light. I set ISO 400, 1/100s, and used the sensor mode with the default sensor. It said f/4.5, and as I said, probably -2 stops of a reasonable exposure. Samsung Galaxy Active 8, I think.

Didn't work. My phone is a galaxy s20 ultra and the numbers this app was giving me were way off. I pointed my phone at a very brightly lit space, set the f stop and iso accordingly, but the calculated shutter speed was ten seconds. I tried to fix it, but nothing I did made the app give me correct calculations. I don't know if it was a problem with my phone or the app itself, but unfortunately it's useless if it doesn't give me the right settings.

Good for alt process photography. I've been looking for a light meter app that includes very low ISO settings and very high f stops needed for large format and alternative process photography. This app goes to ISO 1 and f 256 and the settings it gave me (2 minutes exposure on ISO 1 at f8) worked well on an initial test with the notoriously tricky Harman Direct Positive Paper.

An absolutely essential app for traveling light as an analog photographer. Produces perfect exposures every time and is difficult to fool even with strongly contrasting scenes. I recommend this to any new analog shooters as a supplement to your TTL meter and even in place of a handheld meter. It's that good.

It's a little unstable, and a little hot. It's about half a stop hotter than the meter in my Minolta srt201 But i don't have to find rare button cells to keep it going, and i can easily pull down a bit in post/processing instructions. Great app!

I take a lot of photos in varying light conditions indoors (using both a dslr and a mirrorless camera) and it has always been trial and error to dial in the desired results. Using this app made what usually took several minutes a matter of second's. Im completely happy with this app which is a rarity.

This app is a must have for anyone shooting vintage cameras. I used the the free version for a year before purchasing it. Compared to stand alone light meters costing hundreds of dollars, this is the better option. The best part is it's always with me.

I tried the free version after forgetting my Sekonic while out taking night photos with a 1955 Fed 1G and Fuji Superia 400 film. I wasn't expecting much but all 35 images were correctly exposed. I have checked it against my meter and on my cheap UDGMI F1 it's very accurate.

Been using the free version but purchased this to remove ads and support the developer. Great app. My only suggestion would be to add a Multi-Spot averaging feature. Would be great if you could tap on 3 or 5 spots to meter and get an average exposure

50 years of photographing in professional use. I bought it for the meter. However the depth of field aid is worth three time the meter too me. I have presented this program to my Facebook photographic sites and a number of the people there are wowed. The only question I had/have. Is that when I put in my camera model does it automatically consider my cameras crop factor?

Love this app, surprisingly accurate when using the camera sensor as opposed to the rear facing camera to judge exposure. The amount of features available are also very nice to have given the price and are also easy to use and accurate.

Awesome app. So simple. It just works! Would be so cool if you could customize settings (aperture, shutter speed) for specific cameras.... Or use it to record settings taken for photos...

Awful! Crashes every time I try to launch the camera or sensor meter functions. Fix it or refund my purchase. Update: installed the update as recommended; however, no difference. Still crashes every time.

Best light metering app I've ever used. Very accurate metering results consistent with the ones from my EOS R. A possible improvement: is there any chance to indicate the focal length when zooming the camera?

Jua. S. Aug 28, 2019

I use it mainly for shooting b&w film with high tolerances for over and underexposing. That said, I've found the app to be pretty accurate and very convenient.

Rog. C. Sep 28, 2021

I am an Art major with an emphasis on photography. I use this app to calculate exposure. The paid version allows me to customize it to my camera. It's the only app I've ever paid for and it's worth twice the price.

Jas. H. Apr 12, 2021

Super handy when shooting full manual with film. It helped me get the feel of what settings to use, and I still use it when I'm not sure about some weird lighting situation.

Ton. H. Jun 8, 2020

There should be a reset button because if you use it for any length of time it doesn't appear to be very accurate. Taking a reading outdoors and then using it indoors may not change the settings.

Joe. B. I. Dec 1, 2021

I really like this app. its easy to use with some great features. I don't trust my current film camera's light meter. so this is a great and quick way to check current light conditions.

Lyn. W. Apr 2, 2021

Purchasing does not remove ads, just adds minor features. To remove ads you have to keep paying a subscription. It's an ok-ish app but absolutely not worth a subscription.

Greatest light meter found for Android. It would be great if there is a switch in the sensor meter to toggle the incident light (show only max value).

Geo. B. Apr 14, 2021

A good app. It returns values close enough to my Sekonic that I've no concerns about using it for film work and it comes with a set of handy exposure and DoF calculators. Thanks.

Works occasionally, at some point it just says 1/10 no matter where I aim my phone. The meter only seems to function when within 3 feet of the subject or when it wants to.
