LightMeter Free

I've made this app for real old school photographers or advanced amateurs shooting analog photography. I always give the first version for free without limitations, but improvements, new features and users requests are only made for the paid version. For the price of a soda you will support hundreds of hours of work and will get more features and improvements.
LightMeter's reflected light meter only works with devices that are able to save exif data. Incident light meter should work on any device, but it is usually insufficient for real photographers.

Be advised that the precission and quality of this and all phone light meters is limited by the device itself. I recommend using the reflected light option, the precission can be really good.

Features:

-Incident light metering (needs light sensor)-Reflected light metering (needs camera, only a few are compatible)-Spot measure if camera has zoom.-Support for all screens, including extra high resolution.-Want more? get the noAds version, this one only gets bug fixes updates. And the noAds version gets real improvements like: Better performance than LightMeter Free, Camera sound can be muted. (not in all countries), Exif and sensor info on screen optionally, Incident light metering hold, Alternative ISO selector, State and ISO recall on resume, and much more as long as I keep getting downloads. Currently I'm getting support from 0.016% of the users. Thank you!

If you need help email me at [email protected] (Spanish and English)

App permissions: The app uses the standard permissions for an ad based app that uses the camera and light sensor. There is plenty of info about this on google search so you can check. AdMob is used.

Thanks for your support

I saw this app and thought I'd give it a try. I've been a keen photographer for years, so have a handheld light meter. I'm afraid to say that the app didn't agree with the meter reading. Also it doesn't handle flash metering. So I think my trusty Polaris meter will still be hung around my neck at weddings and other events for the foreseeable future.

This app works, and it works really well, tested with multiple cameras, DSLR, film, different ISO speeds, it all comes out great, BUT... You have to manually adjust ISO each time you open the app. It's a simple step that is easily overlooked and will ruin your shot in a snap. I've overexposed many times from forgetting to adjust that - I wish I could set it and forget it, and adjust when I change film speed.

I would like to love this camera, but ISO resets itself to 100 every time phone shuts off. Also I could not figure out how the ambient light metering works. Which of course is the default so you have to switch it as well. It looks and works pretty good otherwise but I had to stop using it. I'll reconsider if these problems get fixed.

The light meter functions work, but the app resets all settings everytime it's opened, as well as every time the phone is opened with the app still running. This makes it unusable at a moments notice, as everything must be reentered every single time. If the iso were to remain and the last mode used remained active it would be worth five stars

The first thing I did was compare the readings of this app with the readings of my Digital Canon T3i, My Analogue film Minolta XG-1 and Film Canon ElanII E. My Phone: Galaxy S7 Edge The readings are similar to all 3 (but i must say closest to my digital Canon T3i because of Spot Metering and Evaluative Metering on my cam. If you shoot film and need to expose for the shadows, you can use the zoom in feature on this app, to meter for a specific dark spot. In Conclusion: It works. Even better than actual light meters because of the zoom capabilities. It's very accurate.

Works well, looks great, but it always immediately forgets everything the instant you go away from it. I would suggest two things: 1) have it lock to the last reading it took, so that if you put the phone away, but then decide you want to change aperature, you can just bring it back up and know it's the same. 2) have it remember what ISO was last selected! This is probably the most annoying part, though it is only an annoyance.

Awesome app, fast and pretty accurate. Tested against a Sekonic L-308S with multiple phones, there's some variance which is obviously due to the phones sensors. Purchasing the Pro version lets you save calibrations so you can compensate for the inaccuracies of your phone. Well done author!

Beautifully executed. The app is presented similar to an old handheld Westonmaster style light meter, familiar to old pro's like myself brought up on meterless manual cameras. The Incident light mode worked well: press the top right I : R button so that the white dome appears. Hold the phone so that the screen and selfie camera face the sky. The Meter offers shutter/aperture settings for whatever iso you select. When the centre dome instead shows a monochome window the meter is in reflective light mode. Unfortunately this doesn't work for many phone models, including my Moto G3. Compatible phones are listed in the description. A reflected light scene with average tonality will usually give similar readings to what you'd get standing 'in' the scene using Incident light mode. On my incompatible MotoG3 the settings offered would be greatly overexposed. It's a shame but even so, with a real meter I'd usually make do with just an incident light reading. As an incident light meter this functions well enough to support my vintage rangefinder camera. This app is great in that it looks and functions just like a real light meter. I'd definitely pay for this if only it fully supported my phone

I didn't test it against a proper Sekonic lightmeter but all the pictures I took with my film camera are spot on. I like the app a lot. Just a quick comment to the developer though: would it be possible to change the colours of whole seconds to orange? I think that's the standard on most cameras and lightmeters, sub-seconds are white and whole seconds orange. Plus that'll eliminate some minor confusions about repeating numbers on the main dial.

Technically it works to a certain extent. But with an accuracy of +/-2 EV or more you are not going to get much out of it other than for lomo or VERY creative work. You are better off with a cheap Lightmeter from eBay. I tested this with a Sekonic D758DR and Nikon D200 spot meters.

Not bad for when you forgot you let light meter. I wish it worked for strobe lighting. If the problem version does I just might get buy it.

Cav. R. Oct 26, 2016

Everything was excellent. It will be more helpful if user can adjust the light meter a little bit, on my phone I need to add 2.5 stops (ISO 640 for the real ISO 100) and it will work correctly.

Gre. Q. Feb 24, 2018

Compared it to my Gossen and it's actually pretty accurate. Would definitely use it in a pinch if a dedicsated meter wasn't available. The incident metering is done using the sensors at the top front side of the phone (samsung) if anyone is curious. I would recommend to other photogs.

Jon. G. Jul 26, 2018

Works well enough, but a few usability issues make it an unsatisfying experience. The ISO resets itself everytime you close the app, and the app takes changes your phones output volume for some inexplicable reason, so I have to stop using

Recently bought a bridge camera. After 2 weeks, I'm starting to learn how to use the sophisticated features of the camera. Was out shooting in a rainforest today, and was surprised at how little camera light was available. I had to go hunting to try to find the correct aperture in shutter speeds for a good exposure. Went looking on Amazon for an exposure meter. Over 100 bucks for decent ones. Then I thought about Google Play, and downloaded this one. It is very very simple to use and gives me a great start point 4 camera settings. Two things to take notice of, click the IRS setting in upper right corner when in reflective, the image your camera is pointed at is in the little white bubble click measure, and you instantly see correct camera settings. There is a small button at the bottom of the meter that says s. Slide that button to zoom in, then click measure and instantly get camera settings for the zoomed shot. I think this app is very very impressive and updated to the pay version because the developer deserves that acknowledgement for such a great app. Thank you

Really cool look and feel, and works super great. My only gripe is that the ISO only goes down to 50, so if you want to use this to meter anything lower you are going to need to do some quick math.

Bought this app on a whim. Checked against a Minolta Autometer IV F on reflected setting and it matches. The only other thing that I'd like is an extended shutter speed range running into minutes, as this would be useful for infrared photography. Totally worth the money.

Loc. O. a. M. Mar 29, 2017

Pretty accurate as measured against my dslr's meter. I just don't know where the incident reading reads from (back or front camera). If i cover one or both, it's still jumping around. The reflective mode works dandy!

Cla. C. Aug 25, 2017

Buy the pro version if you wish it remembered settings between uses. Obviously not as accurate as a proper combination meter, but it does quite well and is better than many of my educated guesses. Worthwhile.

I don't understand this app. Settings ISO is easy but it doesn't help with setting aperture. Useless

Nic. E. Mar 25, 2017

This would be my favorite light meter app, except that the ISO resets every time I put the app away. Even when I don't close it out. This is a deal breaker, unfortunately. Other than that issue the app is great.

And. M. Jan 27, 2018

Nice App, but I would appreciate the Option to enter an ISO value.. I use expired 80 film, that is ISO 20 or even less

Stu. H. Dec 16, 2016

It's probably not the easiest thing to understand for people with little knowledge. The app starts in iridescent mode, which is useless to me. It doesn't do anything really when I try to use it, however - switching to radial and zooming relative to my focal length. (About half way seems to be about 50mm) and clicking measure, I get an almost accurate reading, within a stop of my Canon A-1. I didn't think this app worked at all until I managed to do a controlled test. Try it and see, if you're having trouble

dyn. Aug 2, 2016

According to it, in broad daylight at iso 3200 I'd have to expose for half a second on f 22

Dan. I. Aug 19, 2016

Sadly the meter seems off a bit in sunny conditions. It obviously isn't aware of the f16 ISO 100 100th of a second norm.

Gra. T. Jan 15, 2018

Great little app, tested against Fuji XT1 and was pretty accurate. I use it to help me check light for use with an old 1937 Leica - thanks

Vil. P. May 9, 2016

My Motorola Moto G measured within 0.3 stops of my Sekonic in normal lighting conditions. In very dark conditions it was not even close but that's just a limitation of my phone.

And. B. Jan 17, 2018

Good free light meter. Uses front camera to meter light. Needs to have an option to use rear camera. Also the ISO only goes down to 50. I need it to go lower for my uses. My camera goes down to 6 iso, film goes down to 1.5. Add those features and this app is worth buying.

Syn. B. May 4, 2016

Beautiful app and would gladly pay to get the ads out :) I understand its accuracy it is relative to the hardware we use, but that wouldn't stop me from trying it anyways as it is fun to use
