Live Star Chart (Planetarium)

Live Star Chart is an astronomy app for sophisticated star enthusiasts, hobby astronomers and star-gazers who value well-founded and precise astronomical illustrations and data.
The basic app function displays a detailed and scalable celestial map with constellations and celestial objects (limit magnitude up to 6.3) that are visible with the naked eye or smaller telescopes. The place and time of observation as well as the direction of view can be manually configured by the user or automatically with the so-called “Live mode” (i.e. GPS, real-time and compass-guided).

Detailed additional information is available for every celestial object (fixed star, deep sky object, planet, moon, sun, meteorite shower). The information of the Bright Star Catalog and the Washington Double Star Catalog is made available for fixed stars. Additionally, users can add notes and links for every object.

The powerful search function makes it possible to align the map to a specific celestial object or guide the observer – in „live mode“ – to an object in the starry sky with specific notices. Searches can be performed according to the traditional name of an object, the catalog designation or the constellation. Moreover, the app makes it easy to identify celestial objects by aligning the device to the object in “Live mode”.

The functionality of the app is complemented by a number of astronomical tools and data.Astronomical events
• Table-format display of the most important astronomical events within a definable time period

Orbit diagram
• Scalable illustration of orbits and positions of planets, minor planets and more than 150 minor objects (asteroids, comets) in the solar system (orrery)

Moon view (orthogonal projection):
• Scalable, orthogonal, geocentric or topocentric moon projection while properly taking the libration, moon phase, position angle and parallactic angle into account
• Optional labeling of the major lunar features (maria, craters, mountains, lacus, sinus, paludes)
• Optional selenographic coordinate grid

Rise and set diagram:
• Diagram showing the visibility of the planets, the sun and the moon at a glance

Positions of the major satellites of Jupiter and Saturn:
• Diagram showing the positions of the major satellites of Jupiter and Saturn relative to the planet
• JI-JIV: Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto
• SI-SVIII: Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Titan, Hyperion, Iapetus

Tabular data:
• Rise, culmination and set times of the planets, sun and moon
• Times and circumstances of planetary phenomena (oppositions, conjunctions, greatest elongation, stations)
• Times and circumstances of lunar phenomena (new moon, full moon, passages of the nodes, apogee and perigee)
• Times of the equinoxes and solstices
• Times and local circumstances of solar and lunar eclipses
• Times of transits, eclipses, occultations and shadow transits of the major satellites of Jupiter and Saturn

Ephemerides calculator:
• Definable time range and time step
• Heliocentric, geocentric, and topocentric positions of the sun, planets and moon in ecliptical, equatorial, and horizontal coordinates with corrections for parallax and refraction
• Heliocentric velocity of the planets
• Physical ephemerides: apparent diameter, magnitude, phase
• Geocentric and topocentric lunar libration

Morning and evening appearance of Venus and Mercury:
• Illustration of the position of Venus or Mercury with respect to the rising/setting sun over a synodic period

It's pretty good. But the live pointing could be improved. It appears to only follow in two axis. Tilt is not displayed. When tilted past 90 degrees, the app auto rotates, ignoring that I disabled it in the android settings. When it does so, the live mode is disabled. I wanted to use this app to help point an equatorially mounted camera on a star tracker. But it does not point well enough with only the two axis, And the auto rotation is a hindrance. I also want an option to sync to a star.

This app is the most exclusive optimal device that Every/Any Star/Universe/Astronomer, to Navigator (professional to learner) should possess, to teach & learn from! This is a star chart of unequal tech that is truly AWSUM and thusly, continue to be unparalleled!

Looks decent to use but everytime i try to search anything it force closes. Thanks for your efforts all the same much appreciated.

Not many options, compass is totally wrong (with other apps it works fine...).

I most ofter use Live Star Charts when under the night sky with my telescope..What you need without the fluff. Well done

This is just the app that I have been looking for after the old Sky Globe program is no longer working.

Lot of rubbish. Complete waste of time.

I can't believe that I can use just the crosshairs for pointing to a star

I believe alcyon software are always the best. Well designed and reliable information of stars and planet, also amazing tools for finding events and phenomenon are the most important characteristics of this lovely application. I hope it will be better and better in the future updates. I recommend to everybody who are working in serious astronomy.

I would happily give this 5 stars because it really does look like a great app. However, it's listed as being free and it's NOT. This is a 7 day trial version and you have to buy it to continue to use it. Bait and switch and somewhat dishonest as it's not obviously stated upfront.

My favorite astronomy app by far. The only gripe, is the live mode doesn't work. But there is so much information on this app. It's worth it even though the live view doesn't work.

Looks good, but live mode is broken. In landscape mode, I am seeing the southern hemisphere. In portrait mode, the zenith is shown as being on the horizon. Turning the tablet between landscape and portrait switches live mode off. Can't calibrate the compass as the calibration dialog disappears as the device is turned. Pretty much useless as it is. Uninstalled.

I did not want one of those point at the sky apps. This app is perfect for me.

Hea. B. May 11, 2016

Doesn't work. All I get is a frozen screen that doesn't move or change no matter what I do. Uninstalled

Joh. B. Jul 19, 2016

Installed to try it out and compare it to my usual night sky app. Found out it's pointing in completely the wrong direction. Tried recalibration of the compass, but that didn't fix it. Couldn't get it to point in the right direction. Uninstalled.

Just what the doctor, or in this case the photographer ordered. Now I can find pictures of specific stars or distant objects to take pictures of

Having tried plenty of star chart apps, this is one of the nicest. Not too complex and really well designed. I shall be using this a lot. Thank you.

Don. P. Jul 6, 2017

I would have to be picky to criticize. It is just shy of perfectly robust. Bravo.

Rob. H. Mar 22, 2016

The more I use this app and the more I learn about it, the more I am of the opinion that it is vastly superior to other apps of this sort. The other apps are not bad, by the way.

A. G. u. Feb 13, 2017

Easy to use is understatement! As an old deep water navigator this thing beats a Natl. Geograhic star chart I had on my desk aboard ship. And it was pretty good. I will pay when the seven day trial is over.

This app has just about everything you could imagine you need for Astronomy. I have everything I need now for even the most demanding observing session, all at my fingertips. A fabulous job in creating this one!

This app is beyond fantastic. I recommend it to everyone. It's my personal planetarium staffed with experts 24/7. You'll be happy you downloaded it. It's for both beginners and old hands!
