* THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF LO-FI MUSIC ********************

Lo-fi, as a musical genre, is classified under the wider-encompassing Indie rock genre, primarily identified with recordings and specific bands starting in the 1980s, during a time when cassette technology (particularly Tascam’s Portastudio) was readily accessible.

The term lo-fi (short for low fidelity) itself was endorsed by William Berger (disk jockey for WFMU) for the greater part of the late 1980s through his radio program that was dedicated to home-recorded music. Lo-fi involved music recording with lower quality compared to the typical standard.

Lo-fi itself can be traced back to the 1900-04 cylinder recordings done by Lionel Mapleson, but the music genre has mainly proliferated in the 1980s. Early supporters of lo-fi music include people and bands such as New Zealand band Tall Dwarfs, Daniel Johnston, The Bilders, and record label K Records.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Lo-fi music has gained prominence thanks to acts like Smog, Jon Spencer Blues, Of Montreal, Blur, Beck, Liz Phair, The Apples in Stereo, Ween, Operation Ivy, Dr. Dog, Aphex Twin, The Shins, Sebadoh, Yo La Tengo, Will Oldham, Pavement, Modest Mouse, and many others. Lo-fi music is still thriving in several countries up to this day
