THE MISERABLES. Les misérables (1862) is a novel published by Victor Hugo and is considered one of the best known works of the nineteenth century. The novel, romantic style, raises through his argument a reasoning about good and evil, about law, politics, ethics, justice and religion. The author confessed that he had been inspired by Vidocq, a French criminal who redeemed himself and ended up inaugurating the French National Police, to create the two protagonists and that the history of his country had inspired him to situate the historical context: for that reason, the characters they live the Rebellion of June (1832) and the subsequent political changes. In addition, the author analyzes the stereotypes of that moment and shows his opposition to the death penalty. In short, this novel is a defense of the oppressed, live in the place and historical moment they live.
