Ludus Latrunculorum

Ludus Latrunculorum is a strategy board game practiced by the ancient Romans, we found some descriptions in Latin literature. It can be considered an ancestor of chess or checkers, rules are lost and have been imagined based on information found. The game consists of a king and pawns. Applied rules: Movement: king and pawns move horizontally and vertically without being able to jump over other pieces. Conditions of victory: You win by capturing all the opponent's pieces or by blocking the opponent's king on 4 sides. Conditions of capture, a pawn is captured if it is surrounded by 2 opposite sides by opponent, if the pawn is in the corner, can be captured by occupying the 2 sides free.

I'm uninstalling. Pros: I liked the simplicity of the app's design. This game can be truly challenging in 'hard' mode. Con: it is possible to "break" the ai with complex strategies--the game will simply freeze if your pieces are arranged in such a way that there is no one superior move to any other available. I love this game, and nearly loved this free app, but enough to wait 30 minutes at a time to figure out whether to restart the match.

For what it's meant to be it's great. There're a few things it could be better at, like a medium and very hard AI level, the ability to remember your settings and not locking up when you alt tab, but it IS free and it works well enough.

One rule that is not implemented: The "king" can move in any "orthogonal" direction (up, down, left, right, NOT diagonally), but unlike the pawns, it should be able to move ONLY by one square. On the plus side, it does have the option for a 8x12 board, which was one of the variations of the game back in antiquity. Not sure about the earlier comment that it is slow to think. Seems pretty fast on my end.
