Pros: Free trading, great interface, easy to use. Cons: Even as it's geared for dollar cost averaging it needs functions for limit orders to maximize returns (this is a big one), could only trade 1-2 times a day at set periods, there should be a function to turn off automatic investing altogether when you sell an entire position. Downgrading to 1 star because I never received a reply after months to 2 emails I sent the support team. Not acceptable.
The app seems a little lacking compared to what I've seen about the PC version. But very nice and easy to use! Honestly, couldn't make the entire process easier; pick what you want to invest in and how much(%), deposit some money, and they do the rest! The M+ trial works well and is very tempting. I've been with Wells Fargo for 19 years and I'm considering fully switching. 🤔 Only annoyance is needing to sign in with my fingerprint everytime I switch to my calculator(or other app) and back.
The app is easy to navigate. Unfortunately you'll be innundated with sales promotions and no way to turn them off. The lack of control of these promos is good enough reason to use the web app exclusively. Finally, important notifications such as needing to submit personal info do NOT appear in the platform at all. You will have to check your emails to know why you cannot create an account
The new home page is a joke. It's just another way for them to spam you with advertisements for their other products. I accidentally clicked on the borrow tab a few weeks ago and started receiving emails and phone calls from them pressuring me to use it. I wish they would spend more time fixing their sub-par investment section instead adding features in other areas that most people don't want.
Works well for what it is - not a trading platform. I like the pie feature it makes DCA easy and Plus membership seems worth it on down days. Sometimes the numbers reflected around trading time are a bit weird, but it settles throughout the day. Not a big fan on the percentages being money weighted, but it is pretty straightforward to see performance. Would recommend as a no frills easy to use platform. Quick deposits and trading are nice.
When the app came out, it was easy to use. Now the developers broke it. It is impossible to figure this app out. I'm on the verge of liquidating my account and moving this portfolio to my main broker. The app is super confusing and I bet the idiot that made it also gets lost trying to find functions. WORST APP EVER! DEVELOPERS BROKE A ONCE GOOD THING
Update: M1 money transfer rate is so slow, that cash flow is between accounts causes tremendous stress. When emergencies occur, I can't get my money. This is a major problem. Robinhhod transfers cash faster. Transfers with M1 aren't really t+2, but more like t+5+. 4 days have gone by since my transfer order was placed, and I have been forced to change the amounts frequently because of how terribly slow they are. Plan ahead with your money here. You won't be seeing it for at least a week.
I really like the app, but it does not have all the things a more advanced user needs. Having to pay for 2 daily trade windows is ludicrous. When something you invested in drops after a window you miss an opportunity. As well you should be able to do some options but you can't on their platform. At the minimum you should be able to sell covered calls and cash secured puts on your positions. Because the limitations Im debating transferring my account. If you don't need them its a great platform.
Terrible experience, been using for 3 years and suddenly they block access to my account with a VPN. I live abroad in a country where you must use a VPN to even access M1. Basically can't login any more. Tried three times to contact the help center and have had no responses.
Honestly the best long term investing options I've seen. It's free and they have a tun of stocks to chose from. It will help you make a balanced portfolio to save for your long term goals. They also have a bank account option with a really high interest rate and a credit card with great rewards.
Great platform, love many of the features and the long term automation of finances mindset. The credit card rewards seem like a gimmick would rather have a basic 2% cash back and they should implement crypto investing. Support is not the best
Update: the platform has improved, but now they're frequently raising borrow rates (and of course making no positive changes to their spend checking account rates.) M1+ was a good deal when it had low borrow rates, now they're no longer competitive. Edit: Thank you for the essentially worthless reply
At first was pretty nice, but when I logged in on a new phone (old one broke) all my money in my account mysteriously disappeared. On top of that there was no response from customer service. Luckily didn't have alot in there, so it wasn't a huge loss to eat.
I need an option/feature to proportionately distribute new funds into a pie by their percentages, instead auto balancing under performing percentages. I need a feature that allows for third-party apps to log in with read only permissions and a secondary password that is able to bypass multi-factor authentication so that it can log in and check balances.
Pie idea cool but confusing with editing. Not easy to sell and then swap stocks even as a long term strategy. Trying to sell a stock and replace it with another stock is not easily done because it thinks it's at 100% when transaction not even done yet. One workaround to swap a stock you don't want is to remove it and add ٪ to an existing stock so total equals 100%. Then exit out of "edit pie" mode then go back in and add the new stock and remove the % on the stock you added the % to.
I like the concept a lot for some of my long-term investing, but have had lots of problems with my account/login recently. It's always randomly logged me out, but multiple times now over the last few weeks I've had to reset my password (in some cases multiple times) to regain access. Which is already a real pain, but then I have to update my login on my other finance apps that interface with it. This also means I have to leave 2-FA disabled, or else I have to email them each time.
I have used M1 Finance for over two years and have enjoyed the simplicity and functionality of most features throughout the site and now the app. After switching my main checking account to Chime I forgot to check if they accepted them and quickly realized they did not. Yes I could get setup a new bank account but seems retuative to do so just to invest in one app. Hope they add Chime soon!
I love the concept of pies and fractional shares. However, to me, the platform has quite a learning curve. Now that I have used it for a while I am beginning to get a handle on using this app.
Excellent in almost every way. I wish there was a drip function to auto reinvest dividends into the underlying asset.
Hard to give it a high rating considering Robinhood is an option. Doesn't allow you to add multiple bank accounts, this made difficult for me. Also, they only have a certain window of time to set your position, if you miss it you need to upgrade to pro or wait the next day. Transfers from your account are slow. The only reason I gave it a try is the way it reinvests your dividends.
Really like the app. However, I wish there was a way to export the holdings, performance, and valuation data to excel or a cover file for further analytics. Edited 03.10.22 (original 02.26.21) Apex (the clearing firm) has all the data I need and I can export everything to excel. Additionally, the M1 app has provided excellent customer service for all of my concerns and continue to update the functionality of the app and website.
Great app. Great way to invest in stocks. Can very easily create categories and allocate funds and M1 can even do partial stock buys which is the greatest benefit for small time investors like me.
Since my previous review, things have improved tremendously though there's still work to do... Bumping it from 1 star to 4 because through time M1 has become one my favorite fintech out there... Once you have mobile check deposits and some other functional features, I'll make it a 5...
Pretty good finance app. However, I don't like how pushy they are with credit-card sign up or leverage borrowing.
make buying and selling stocks easy. I don't believe any other app can give you money to borrow just to build your money. and another thing it really builds your credit too. makes management understanding. just try it for yourself.
I can accomplish everything from here without needing to go to the web. Elegant interface, ease of access to most frequent actions. Thumbs up!
A solid app for a solid service. I'd really like an account switching feature; it would make helping my parents manage their finances a lot simpler.
The concept from the ground up is amazing. It's a great way to organize and automate investing. The app isn't perfect, but it's pretty close in my opinion. Functionally it is great, but I would add some better options for how new slices are squeezed in.
Missing some features at the overall portfolio level, and erasing the text in the search makes my keyboard collapse. Other than that it if reliable and delightful, and without all the things that annoy me about a lot of my apps (such as sever clicks to get to login, and ease of accidently doing something while scrolling or swiping). Rebalancing is easy, pies can br in other pies, auto-invest is easy, AND they allow for some of the intergrations you'd like such as Mint.
