It's a fantastic game, with just a few things I'd improve (zooming into cards is tedious, you can't scroll while they're zoomed, controls are kinda crowded, etc). However, this is a demo. I finished the tutorial and the first chapter of the campaign. Now anything else I want to do requires payment. If you have to pay to unlock anything past the first part of the game, you've made a demo.
I was really disappointed in this, tried to play the tutorial and got nothing but black screen. I can see players' icons and hear audio, but I can't see any cards. A complete waste of a GB and a half. Thanks, Wizards. Edit: this seems to be and issue primarily with LG phones, I don't know about Samsung and other Androids. It still ought to be fixed, though.
The source material the game is based off from is fun, so the game is fun. However, the execution of the gameplay was poorly done, in my opinion. It wasn't clear you could farm cards for instance. The single player experience is limited, but fun. I never felt anything was unfairly hard. The last boss was challenging but beatable. Shuffle seems broken. The same card comes in bunches. This is most noticeable with lands, but it's extremely noticeable overall. I very rarely get an initial deal without multiples of the same card showing up. As a result you very rarely play a full game in competitive because it seems almost every game someone gets given a poor deal and they quit. So everyone constantly quitting is kind of lame. Can't blame them though, when you get the same cards, it gets boring. The online stuff has a lot of bugs when matching people up. Sometimes I get a match, but I am taken back to the main menu. Sometimes it never connects. I was also annoyed that you couldn't farm cards after a certain point. I bought the whole game, including the expansion, so it was fun enough to encourage me to do that. But I think I just like the card game.
Not bad, enjoyable game. However, need to make it easier to select cards out of library during duel. Gives you about 10 seconds to scroll back and forth, back and forth, as you continuously pass the card you're trying to grab and then times up and too late. There's got to be a better way to navigate your library than scrolling through 100 cards with your finger.
This game plays like magic and has the potential to be like Arena for mobile. However it is just locked out by greed and having to purchase everything to new level on the main quest (once you play 4 levels) and the multiplayer feature. I can't recommend this game to anyone unless they change this which is a shame. Reminds me a bit like EA, don't waste your time.
This is a reasonable digital version of the trading card game, with an interesting card set, allowing for a variety of deck styles. However, the user interface suffers from issues, particularly in multiplayer. I regularly find that the countdown timers used to signify the end of a phase or for reactions to an opponent casting a spell are too short, especially when latency is a factor. If you gave me a penny each time I tried and failed to stop a timer, it would have paid to unlock the full game!
Very disappointed and frustrated with this ap. It is slow and unresponsive. Has caused me on several occasions to skip past moves I wanted to make when I hit control again just as first touch was having effect. This has cost me more than one game. Controls are too small and text is often too small to read (graveyard browser). I play a lot of other games on this phone without such problems. AI is good considering complexity of game, but nowhere near as good as decent human player
not worth it anymore it's not clear upfront that it's not free to play, and the cost to unlock new areas and stuff are expensive. Even the practice battles are 11.75. I'm unsatisfied with my experience and will be deleting it when this review is done. I hope that it can be re thought and the single player mode is free to play at least somewhere down the road.
I love Magic. I've never been able to really buy the cards so this is a terrific idea. But the in game interface is just simple AWFUL. everything is so small and tiny, and I'm playing on an s9, so its not like I'm playing on a tiny screen. Maybe an option for a cleaner top down interface, where BOTH players hands are visible and full screen support for wide screen phone needs to be looked into. shouldn't have to strain to SEE anything on the screen. other then that... terrific.
It's MTG, so it's fun. Interface is decent except the text is extremely small. My main complaint is that there is only a very limited amount of content available, so you have to pay to download expansions, and there are only a few duels in each new world you buy. There isn't any way to get new cards other than by playing the campaigns, so without paying it stales fast. The campaign mode itself is severely lacking in depth, it's just a series of duels with a half-hearted attempt at a story.
I really, really enjoyed this game, however, I was not pleased to find out that after what is essentially the tutorial, the entire rest of the game is locked out including the multiplayer. The controls can be a bit janky sometimes but are fine. It can be a tad awkward to navigate the screens but it doesn't really matter imo.
I am only disappointed that it's NOT A FREE TO PLAY. even multi-player is locked and you can't even finish the first campaign without paying 10 for the whole game. However it does have a wonderfully clear tutorial. That said, it's a wonderfully made game. I like the countdown timer btw steps with option to pause rather than a mandatory pause with a next button, this way makes it superior to MTG arena.
Love the gameplay. The deck building and everything. Just wish there was more content that came with the base game. I'm not too fond of having to pay for more content after barely an hour or two. Most of that time being spent making new decks. At least if the first free roaming plane was available for free there'd be a little mode content to try before deciding whether or not I wanna pay for more.
A lot of fun and great way to scratch your MTG itch. It is a phone resource hog and occasionally gets a little buggy. I would give it a 4 to 4.5 rating even with those short comings. Where I dock points is that it does not save your progress or purchases when you change phones. (I have played this for years and always use Android phones.) I have had to repurchase the 1 expansion game on each phone and go through the entire time consuming and mind numbing tutorial every time.
So fun and just like MTG card game. Loves opening the boosters and building decks. The npc game is really easy to beat though. Hoping it gets more challenging after the first world. Unfortunately, it won't let me purchase the next realm or unlock any of the features in the store. I really want to try the multiplayer feature. Seems like a bug :( I also don't see anywhere to report bugs. Help?!
I absolutely love MtG. I've played this exact app on a much cheaper phone than what I have now and it worked great. I have bought and paid for almost everything I could in the app on the other phone. Now I want to log into my account and be able to play the game again and I can't. The game loads fine until the main menu. None of the words show up and it shows the icons on a black background. I choose to start the game and the battlefield and the decks do not load. Its a black background and the players avatars. I've changed every setting I could think of and nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app multiple times to get the same outcome. Could you please look into what would cause it to not load completely? Thank you.
Good game, does require spending a bit of money if you want to carry on with the campaign, how much altogether I'm unsure yet but i think it is worth it. Definetly cheaper than spending on actual magic cards anyway. It has a little annoyance where if you press off the game to go on a different app or text or whatever it makes you restart the whole game not too bad if you're mid match as you can just press resume game after it has loaded up again but if you're in the middle of creating a deck it doesn't go from where you were it just wipes your progress. Even if you only press the button that brings your open apps up and don't actually go off the game it still takes you back to the title screen, I press this button accidently all the time lol so might be a thing to look into =) for instance I did this review when the game asked and now I'll have to go back to the title screen rather than just being where i left off when I came to do the review. It's not game breaking but rather frustrating at times =)
The game works pretty well. The tutorial is really good. The controls can sometimes be hard, e.g. you can't choose which lands to tap for colorless mana. The app crashed halfway a game. I couldn't sign in to purchase now, and hence not continue playing. EDIT: I could sign in to the store now, only to realize it is expensive.
Multiplayer no longer functions, and I was beginning to get bored with the cardpool anyway. I'd recommend new players steer clear, as the AI isn't very intelligent and playing against it gets old very quickly. You also cannot unlock a large chunk of the cards that used to be free (as rewards for winning multiplayer duels) without paying an exorbitant rate for them. It was great while it lasted, but it's time to put this app to bed.
Great fun, but I hate the zoomed out layout. I have to constantly zoom into cards to read them and the awkward buttons are far too small. The game, should not try and recreate a tabletop experience, it should be adapted to mobile in the sense that everything is easily accessable to the eye and finger. And if they have to sacrifice a little bit of aesthetic to achieve that, it's fine by me. Will readily rate 5 stars. Perhaps try changing to a more friendly layout like the official Ascension app?
As other users stated before, the free to play portion of the game is only the tutorials and the first level. In order to continue playing you have to restart the game on different colors to get more gameplay. I'm sorry Wizards of the Coast, i will continue purchasing the actual cards because i enjoy the experience but i will not be giving you money for digital versions. I just wanted to casually play and test out some decks when i dont have anyone to play with but I don't want to invest in a game that may be discontinued in the near future and waste my money.
As others have said, it's a great demo. It would not let me purchase expansions due to continously crashing the Google sign in interface. Have tried things like clearing store cache and rebooting phone to no avail. I'm on an s8+ running the newest version of Android. Also kind of lame that it can't be connected with arena. Otherwise, fun demo, and kind of clunky interface for deck building.
i love magic, dont get me wrong. i have 7 decks of all different combos. i play in my towns tournaments from time to time. i even play during school when i have time. this is not fun. i assume it is, but when i have to wait an hour to download it, only to be met by a black screen at the tutorial and someone speaking, its kinda a big turn off. hopefully no one else has had this problem.
Impossible to play the tutorial if the app is bugged so bad that you cannot see any cards. My own or my opponent's. Tried restarting my phone to see if that could fix it and I still could not see any cards. I could see animations of the cards, not the ones that were in play. The app should be removed or entirely recoded for the current year.
Great version of the game but difficult to easily see the battlefield on phone screen . Also frustrating, as someone who has played magic for nearly 20 years, that it forces you through the tutorial even if you tell it you've played loads. Other than that it's great. Loads of cards and loads of content both on and of line. Highly recommended for any planeswalker
The gameplay is good. Would have rated higher than a three star overall, except it is not allowing me to log on with my google games account so unable to continue past the first level or access the store... Also, need to be able to select the color of land that gets tapped. Have had the lands to perform actions, but the land I needed got automatically tapped by the computer.
I'm torn on this one. The gameplay is enjoyable on the face of it, and the controls are easy enough to get your head around - although a bit clunky. The tutorial is comprehensive and gives you a basic understanding of the game. However, this game is a massive drain on the battery and any fun you're having is short lived. The AI matches are a massive frustration as it tends to feel like your draws are manipulated where you would expect randomization, in order to make the AI difficult. The shop is somewhat inaccessible, with restoring purchases being very hit and miss. I am also unable to access the shop to purchase anything. The card game itself is good, but this app is very lackluster.
