metroNotify

Get on board with the latest update of Metro’s app – Metro Notify 2.1. Download now to receive live updates pushed to your device directly from Metro’s train control centre.
The app allows you to personalise Metro’s live service updates to receive the information you want at the times that you need it.

Some of the features include:

‘My Trips’ allows you set up your stations as well as lines so you can receive the next four timetabled services from your chosen stations and will show alerts for your chosen lines

A ‘Morning Update’ which assures you that your selected line/s is running a ‘good service’

An ‘Info’ section with more room for better travel advice and special event information, complete with badge icons when content is updated

Please note that the next four timetabled departures will only be provided when line status is listed as good service. If you are travelling from a station that has multiple lines running though it make sure to select all relevant lines to ensure you get all the timetabled services running through your station.

The push notifications are defined by the following travel categories which advise on the best action for you to take:

Good Service – trains are currently running on time to five minutes.

Minor delays – journey time may be increased with trains experiencing delays between five to 15 minutes; however stay with your planned travel.

Major delays – significantly longer journey times expected with trains delayed by over 15 minutes. Consider alternative transport where possible while we work to fix the problem.

Suspended – a section of the line has been suspended due to an unplanned disruption. Replacement buses will be used where possible, but alternative modes of transport should also be considered.

Download the app this morning. It has very limited functions and is not very useful. My biggest hate is that I can create a "trip" from Cranbourne to City but can't create a City to Cranbourne. It's only good for going to work in the morning as I can't see the reverse trip for going home. Also, if you have created muliptle trips, you can't delete any. Not a fan of this app but like the idea and Metro as is useless at staying on schedule.

This App really is useless at most times. Don't think it has to do only with the app's robustness/quality but also with their crappy back end that can't facilitate such a service. Backwards as always with Metro. The app notifies me up to an hour after the event has happened. On the occasions I get an event on time, if I click it from the notification tray it, most times it will open the app only for it to not show. Click refresh does not fix this either and only shows that my train line has good service (when I just got notified of an issue?). As software engineer myself I could probably do a better job developing this on my own. Really needs fixing!

Does what it says on the tin - albeit slowly - but then tries to add pointless stuff on top that you can't control. I get messages about this lift being out of action or done concourse. These should be notification options. All I care about is line status; like 90% of people using the app.

For what should be a pretty easy app to make really useful and easy to use, it's terrible. Like a lot of other people say, notifications are hit and miss, often arriving well and truly too late And when the notification is for the Lilydale line, I go into the app and what pops up is the Belgrave line.

The app has room for improvement for sure, however, what I like on this version of the app is that it keeps me up to date about the delays in my line and if a line has been terminated due to rail work or anything else. This app makes it easier for me to decide which mode of transport to take.

App hasn't worked for years now. Notification today says 'due to police request bo..' so you click on the notification to find the end of the sentence and it takes you to a blank 'my trips' page that has unrelated instructions for adding to 'mytrips'. Ths happens every single time there's a potentialy useful notification.

It needs to allow us to pick morning and evening times to be notified When there is a train notice, it does not allow me to check the next train times unless I wait for the notice to go away which is often 30-60mins. Defeats the purpose of the app. If there is a notice with a large paragraph of writing it cuts off and I can't scroll down to read more.

Works ok, great to be able to select a morning line status but what about the afternoon!!. Also not being able to see the next 4 outbound trains because of a delay on the city bound train makes no sense. No one travels like this. Minimal features, could be improved

Really lacking in information and general usability. Doesn't show full details (can't click to expand the update) when there are issues with train service. Also does not show next train service when there are minor issues e.g. if there are bus replacements for part of the train journey, all I get is a notification for that, nothing to indicate when the next train is.

I used to love this app until the push notifications stopped working. They are turned on within the settings as well as the 'morning update' which I havent received for the past 6 months. I suppose this is what you get from metro, a buggy mess, just like their train system.

Notifications are very hit and miss often late or just not at all. Then when I try to open the app it takes 2-3 minutes to open. Sometimes doesn't open at all.

App is garbage, Belgrave line night timetable has been wrong for over a year. I keep accidentally using it and missing trains by 5-10 mins. Not sure why this isn't referencing a common data source that journey planner seems to use and get right. Notifications aren't bad, but if there's a warning on your line you can't view the timetable, only the warning.

Think of the most incompetent app created by an equally incompetent rail operator. My favourite feature this app has is where you can't see the scheduled departure times AT ALL when one or more trains is either late or cancelled (even if the cancellation is an hour away)... which being Metro is always.

Mat. T. Jan 29, 2020

Crashed each of the 4 times I used it,, in particular when trying to set my preferred travel time - therefore kept sending notifications into the night about cancelled trains on the line I chose. The only way to stop them comming was to uninstall. Considerable room for improvement here.

One star is overly generous. Almost always fails to load when there is a service disruption i.e. the time when you need the info the most. It's less reliable than Metro's actual train service which is really saying something. Metro gets paid billions of taxpayer dollars to run Melbourne's trains yet they can't afford the miniscule amount it would take to pay a developer to build an app to provide basic, timely information to paying customers. Disgraceful incompetence.

Great concept and would be very useful if it works as intended. This is one of the buggiest apps I've used. When a release addresses a bug another one appears. The dev and test teams probably tried their best but still....the bugs were glaringly obvious!

Hb. W. Jan 12, 2020

Added my train line as a favorite to My Trips to discover it's duplicated to show my line Twice. If I delete one of My Trips both of My Trips are then deleted. There's also no ability to reverse the My Trips to show outbound travel from CBD to my home destination. Come on. This is an easy fix surely

Doesn't tell you platforms, and if your line has multiple routes/termination points (e.g. Pakenham line, but particular service could terminate at Westall or Dandenong), the app won't tell you that either. You have to keep cross checking between the PTV app and this app with information discrepancies between the 2 apps.

Joe. G. Oct 22, 2019

In the October update, I couldn't select the railway stations when I select to add a railway line. No railway stations were displayed, just a blank screen for any line I chose. This has now been fixed.

Dar. Jan 15, 2020

Sometimes sends me useful notifications out of the blue, but when I press on the notification to get more info (or, say, read the rest of it - it's usually too long to read) the app opens to its home screen and any useful information is gone.

Jas. M. Dec 10, 2018

Notifications have no longer been coming through, so have to manually open the app to see that there's delays in the morning or when on PT Edit 11/12/18 - still no fix for this. Google maps provides more reliable updates than Metro's own app...

Meg. L. Feb 1, 2021

I downloaded this app in the hopes it would provide information as to when trains are running late, but using it this morning it said the train was on time when in actual fact it was running late. It caused me a lot of confusion and I ended up getting off my train thinking it was the wrong one, only to see on the board as the train left that it was the right one. As such, I don't really understand the point of having this app. I can just look at a timetable or Google.

Mak. L. Jan 10, 2019

a terrible app design, information is poorly laid out and unhelpful, notifications do not take you into a useful part of the app, previous alerts in the app cannot be dismissed, the way to configure the alerts you are interested in is far too limited and no meaningful updates or improvements to the app in years. Train trapper is far superior, PTV just need to make the data available via an API to third party developers who actually know how to build a good quality app.

Nic. B. Aug 7, 2019

App is very erratic. doesn't aways open, so you need to uninstall and reinstall. if there is an issue, you can't see when the next trains are.

Tob. S. Dec 16, 2019

Frustrating as hell! Frequently this apps gives no warning that trains have been cancelled or are not running, since this is the only thing it was created to do I'd say it's a failure!

Ste. Jul 18, 2019

July 19 Apps now working and notifications back on phone and Fitbit. People on Android One should be happy now (Pixel/Nokia) Note though Google Pay for Myki does not work on certain phones for certain stations. (Flinders Street) A real pain. I got a refund. PTV were first class about it. Been a long road to get the app right but now done.

Car. M. Feb 24, 2019

Notifications currently not working (pixel 3) Also I find the fact that the screen gets completely blocked by any issues and you're unable to see train information not useful at all.

Nic. P. Apr 10, 2019

No push notifications! Why have they stopped working? The app is pretty much useless these push notifications. My notification settings are turned on!
