Middle Earth Index

Even as a Tolkien fanatic, it is often tough to remember all the names and places when reading his extensive works. Here is your glossary of all things Tolkien, with over 5000 entries! The perfect companion to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, or The Silmarillion.
This application is also a useful aid when watching the movies! In 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey', there are many references to things that die-hard Tolkien fans will understand, yet the casual movie-goer will not. The dwarves mention Ered Luin, Dain, and Durin. Radagast calls the spiders a "spawn of Ungoliant". Gandalf warns Radagast of the "Gundabad wargs", yet Radagast is unafraid with his "Rhosgobel rabbits". Galadriel speaks of the Witch-King of Angmar, and Rhudaur.

What is the "Desolation of Smaug" or "The Battle of the Five Armies"? How do all of these new characters, such as Thranduil, Beorn and Bard, fit in with the Middle Earth we have seen so far? These references, among others, can now be easily and conveniently understood.

Features include an intuitive categorization, search capabilities, and links for more information.

This is my first app, built purely for my own enjoyment. Even after multiple readings of The Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales, I still found it hard to remember the massive amount of information, and didn't like going online to find it, so I started designing this app. Now I have decided to share it with everyone!

Please rate, and feel free to send me constructive criticism. I am planning to continue updating the appearance, layout, and entry information.

This is a great app and very fun to go through. It is set up well though I would suggest that there be embedded links on the pages. This would be especially helpful for things that have multiple names so if you only know the English translation you don't then have to remember and search for the elvish or dwarvish name.

A great idea that fails in accuracy and if used by someone who has never read Tolkiens works would mislead you greatly. Examples of lack of detail would be discussing Finrod Felagund without mentioning his importance to men upon their arrival or discussing the word "magnificent" without mentioning Smaug. Great idea for an app but falls very short of what it could or should be.

I love this app! Not only those it have things I never knew about lotr but it also reminds me of things I forgot. Only problem is that there is a few mistakes. For example, I am pretty that the battle of the Five Armies has nothing to do with when Thorin and his company were stuck in Goblin town.

Brilliant app, gifting great knowledge to new comers of Tolkien's Universe as freely as it does to lifelong fans. One suggestion would be a randomiser button which sends you to a random entry so as to satisfy my raging need to procrastinate.

You should add in Gilthrang though. He is the Ainur who helps Melkor break the Doors of Night and start the Dagor Dagorath in the Fourth Age, thus leading to the Second Music of the Ainur. And you forgot Lurtz but that's ok since he's not a REAL Orc. Only exists in the movies.

I really hope that the author continues to work on it. The definitions are great, but I sometimes wished it gave info on how the character died etc. And the addition of maps would be super cool. But I'm just nitpicking. Install this app now.

Great app, but it's missing some of the basics. There is no mention of Elrond from what I can see

Fantastic. I am impressed that someone was able to put 99% of almost entirely correct Middle-Earth information into one app. There are a few minor things missing, but that makes little difference. I refer to this app all the time! Thank you.

This is a brilliant app, ESP one without ads! But it needs must have an exit! Pages just build on top of each other and when exiting, one must back out thru ALL seen pages. Devs? How about double-back as exit? A favorite button/star would be great, Internal links WOULD be nice too, but I STILL think that you've done a marvelous job for a free app! (Elrond need SERIOUS work!) can't wait to visit your site!

This app has absolutely everything you could ask about Tolkien's universe. The only thing that needs to be included is a map.

Great idea but needs some work. The description of elrond is not near enough and there is no section for the balrogs. Also the nazgul are not described in enough detail. How about an editing facility vetted by the author.

This app looks great and is the perfect companion for gaming, watching or reading anything Tolkien. I can hardly make do without it anymore!

It keeps crashing on my tablet! I needed this for this huge fanfiction I'm writing and it's no use if I can't even get to the information.

I am a lord of the rings buff myself I even have on font on Microsoft Word to write in dwarf runes, this app goes above and beyond containing all kinds of Information. It covers everything everything except I would have liked a solid entry about the dunedain. I rate this app 5 stars and I definitely recommend it. :)

If you love or even like the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit and you don't like this then there is something wrong with you, IMO!

A wonderful app.. I can't read the lotr books without this app.. but it wud have been great if you could include the pronunciation of each of these words. Either by voice or phonemes. Since im new to middle earth books, I find the names very strange.

I love this app, I get lost in it, all I wish it had was a favorite button.

S. D. Mar 23, 2017

Two stars for the informations it provides. But reading it feels just like reading a shopping list! Totally boring. It could be presented with pictures and those beautiful middle-age font style and stuffs. Thank you very much.

Han. B. Jul 18, 2014

I write middle earth fanfics all of the time, and the great part about this app is that whenever I'm not sure on a fact, I can look it up in here, and it had yet failed to give me an answer. Perfect!

Emi. P. Mar 30, 2015

I just wish it had pictures, maps and separated the plants from animals.

Moh. H. S. Apr 4, 2018

Ari. L. Apr 23, 2014

It's really hard to follow all the names and characters in Tolkien's books, to have a quick index like this helps a LOT! Congrats for those who made this happen! Extremely helpful!

Ste. J. Jul 16, 2015

Useful. My first time going through the Simarillian, and this helps. If it had some maps, it would be really useful. My book just includes a map of Beleriand, but it takes A LOT about A LOT of places put outside of that area.

A must have for all Tolkien enthusiasts. From the movies to the books most useful lotr app out there!
