Mozilla Stumbler

Mozilla is a nonprofit project and global community building a better internet. Mozilla Stumbler is an open-source wireless network scanner that collects GPS data for the Mozilla Location Service, our crowd-sourced location database. As you move around, the app "stumbles" upon new Wi-Fi networks and cell towers. The Mozilla Location Service combines these wireless network measurements to provide geolocation services for Firefox OS devices and other open source projects. For more information, visit our project page:

How to use Mozilla Stumbler
• The app stops/pauses automatically when you are not moving or your battery is low. (This feature works better on newer devices as they have better sensors).
• Go to un-stumbled areas (not covered in blue) to fill in the coverage map: https://location.services.mozilla.com/map
• Improve the accuracy of the service by stumbling in the blue areas.
• Try walking, biking, or driving new routes with Mozilla Stumbler every day!
• Start with major streets and intersections, then explore smaller streets.
• Your contributions will take a day to show up on the coverage map.

Feedback

• Please report bugs on GitHub: https://github.com/mozilla/MozStumbler/issues
• or the #geo IRC channel on https://wiki.mozilla.org/IRC

To conserve cellular data usage, the Stumbler's map view only shows high resolution map tiles on Wi-Fi. In the Settings, you can change this to always show the high resolution maps,

This app does not appear to offer anything over other stumbling/wardriving apps, notably Wigle WiFi. Doesn't separate your own contributions from everything else. No accessible database/csv/kmz files for working with the data you capture. Found networks only appear on the map when it's zoomed out so far that it's worthless. No live view showing networks currently visible. There are several other features this app lacks compared to others as well, but I've run out of space. Also frequent crashes!

I'm a big fan of Mozilla and what they're trying to achieve so I like to contribute where I can hence why I downloaded this app however it crashes quite often and clears the data on the map. The map also doesn't seem to update with the data of where I've been so hard to tell if I'm actually contributing or not. Considering this app uses battery and data it'd be nice if it worked properly

I think it's good for people to contribute to things like this. There however seems to be some bugs when switcing over to Samsung DeX for instance it doesn't show any of my previous reports. It says I've never done anything.

I don't recommend this app at present. It crashes regularly and so I have not been able to upload any of the data that I have collected about mobile cells in my suburb. Very disappointing, specially because this issue has been reported weeks ago ...

Maps are not loaded. It shows blue paths or dots, which indicate where Stumbler has detected cell tower signals and WiFi signals. I am going to delete the app from my smartphone.

The app seems barely functional... Or maybe the open street maps project is just no good for the usa right now. App has a steep learning curve, i didnt find any clear explanation of the numbers at the top. Guess this is a developers beta project? Best wishes, but I currently cant find a use for this particular project.

Crashes frequently. FOSS alternative Tower Collector works better. Still using ancient Android APIs meant for devices now useless in tower collecting due to radio and frequency changes.

Doesn't work. Opening screen is as far as it goes. Can read the Privacy policy, but the Start does nothing and it has no exit. Pixel 2XL.

Is this abandoned? It feels abandoned. Shame. Will update my review if/when this app finally gets updated. App crashes constantly on 2 different Android phones in my household (Galaxy Fold -Android 11, Galaxy S10e -Android 10). Going on 2 years without updates as of this review.

Doesn't work on Android 10. Lots of potential for the data, but clearly, Mozilla doesn't think this is a priority.

Hasn't been updated over a year and crashes on Android 10. Very disappointed. This is a small app, why it's not getting updated? Has the project became irreverent or because it doesn't make money for Mozilla?

This app is broken. Crashes at launch on all devices. Go ahead try to prove me wrong... Tablet, phablet, or phone this is not an Android application.

dies in the background and doesn't restart so it ends up doing nothing, I'm running a pixel 2xl and set it to not be throttled by battery so i know it is not Android killing the app

Crashes (with stop notification) about every 15 minutes - even without app running. Same thing 3 months ago.

Just installed because I've loved Mozilla for years 💞 but what is the moving blue dot on my screen? Can't seem to find it on the Legend. Thanks for everything!

I like this app due to the fact that it help's show wherever most WI-FI & Bluetooth junkies are in your perimeter.

I love the concept but it doesn't do its job, the map doesn't load and it doesn't detect wifi signals
