Narrative Nods – Plot Development Tool for Authors

Narrative Nods is a story development app that helps fiction writers transform their ideas into coherent, powerful plots.

Taking into consideration a vast number of variables from information the user provides about characters, structure, and the overall story goal, it creates narrative possibilities ("nods") that assist the author in selecting dynamic, sense-making plots.

How do the protagonist's character traits affect the story? In which way does the character role of the opponent influence the creation of a narratively solid novel? And how do narrative choices and journeys affect the ending of the book?

Narrative Nods helps you make critical decisions about your story, at the same time explaining in a clear, easy-to-understand manner the literary theory behind these storytelling decisions.

The developer is a published author with a PhD in English literature.

This is an amazing app. I used it for my forst novel and it gave me feedback of what I could improve. Changing the settings was really easy and it helped me experiment with possible ending and their upsides and downsides. It's really good if you want to make sure your story is solid. There's an export feature but my tablet suddenly died and I lost the feedback. It would be great if there was a way to save the data on the cloud.

This is a great tool to use if you're brainstorming a new story and want to get your characters aligned. Its really nice to see an analysis of your choices, and though it's an automated one, it provides good hints and insights about the combinations of the choices you have made. It also teaches several basic concepts which are useful for beginning writers to know.

Excellent narrative app. I knew next to nothing about storytelling save for the basics before using this app, and now I have an actual timeline of events in mind for a story I had thought about making for a while. The interface is simple, the terms are complex but manageable, and the app gives you the tools you need to build up from a simple idea you have to a truly interesting story many readers/viewers will love. I would recommend this app to anyone else who is just starting.

This app certainly helped me to visualize and improve narratives, but it feels somewhat inflexible and might not work for some stories. It would be nice to have more options relating to major story events and to narrative relationships between characters. All in all, it is easy-to-use and does its job pretty well despite needing a few improvements. Definitely a good tool for writers.

I geeked out so hard doing this exercise for my short story. The colors and symbols and how everything builds up is so satisfying to go through step by step, and getting some not-so-satisfactory results on the report made me realize how I can put twists into my story that take it to the next level! Issues are: Way too many words to explain everything! Try to trim down all help pages and all text in general to use the fewest words possible! The Journeys tab needs to have better & clearer examples

This app is a great tool to help weave complex characters and compelling links between them. It is fast and to the point and quite useful. Characters are what make a story. This is not a book building tool, and you can't write scenes with it. Instead, it is a functional story building app to have in my toolbox. Cool concept!

First, I'd like to say this app is amazing overal. But because I dont have much space, I'd like to focus on ways you can improve this app. The character roles are flawed. In my story, the 'chorus' is also the protaginist. The 'dreamer' could be described as more than one person, and an opponent turns into an ally. I'd really like to see a more creative way to assign character roles, so that the final report is a little more accurate. That is all there is to complain about though, otherwise 10/10

I love this app! It really gets you thinking about what's going to happen in your plot, and by the time you're finished filling everything in your idea has turned into an awesome story ready to get written! I love how you can save your entries in those 5 slots so you can start working on another idea without losing everything! Thank you so much for this app! I 100% reccommend it!

Great app! A useful system of helping the writer manage his or her work amd the details in it. However, the app is not that flexible. For authors who don't like to stick with the cliché style of writing a typical novel. Some stories may be perspective based where voices shift from one character's view, contains a series of backstory revealing. This indicates that there isn't really a main character but main characters of their own individual story. The app has potential, kudos to the developers!

Awesome app. Despite my initial doubts, I found the app performed it's job admirably. Using the author's instructions I was able to refine my plot into a cohesive unit and recycle my useless characters into more functional ones. I keep goin back to the results page to refresh my thinking and I've been using it for the past six months consistently. 5 star stuff for sure, I'd love to see more tools along the same vein.

This is a very good app, but my main problem is that you cant have more than 2 protaganists or any of the other character slots, and cant have more than 3 additional characters. my story has 12 protaganists, but most are assistants and/or opponents. there is a bug where it says that you didnt put in everything, but it asks if you want to continue rating it, so it isnt a problem for me. I will change this to 5 stars if you help me out

It's pretty solid for developing what you want with your writing there are a few things I'd like to see updated specifically with how th characters can get lined up and more options between primary, secondary, and tertiary. Hopefully that will come down the road. Also having a physical plot map and how storylines will either run parallel or intersect within the story would be great! Overall a great app though, still would definitely recommend!

This is a great app for improving the coherency of your book's plot! Although I am entirely new to writing this app (after some explanations for the terms used) helped me see where my plot was lacking. I highly reccomend it to others who have no clue what they are doing and need something to guide them.

I feel like this would be a really great app for writing short stories, stories with more 'conventional' characters, and/or straightforward plots. The app is well-designed and easy to use, but ultimately overly simplistic for what I'm working on. Honestly, I recommend trying this app if you think it might help you out! It just wasn't for me.

You are an awesome developer. This app is just what I needed to keep my writer's block in check. It helps me see my stories in a more organized way so I know what to change (or eliminate) to make my plot really shine the way I intended. I fell in love with your Mansion Text adventure game (currently playing it now) and I hope you make more apps and games in the future. I like you!

It's a nice idea and could be really useful for developing your stories in a way that makes it easy to see your vision unfolding, but it's too buggy. Even though I saved before closing, when I went back and reopened my project, all the text I had typed had been lost.

I can understand needing structure, but this is almost too strict. It's annoying that this is billed as if it can analyze and fix plot problem when it's just YOU putting in the information that you've probably already decided (or need written elsewhere, anyway) and possibly thinking on it more (not QUITE the same) There's little to no custmization, only 6 characters to start with and 3 more added if you flip the advance option (but then you CAN'T use the first entered 6 for double roles!)

sßs. s. Feb 1, 2020

Really boils down to being a checklist to get your ideas flesh out. Doesn't really need to be an app, could be a spreadsheet. All the data you enter is fairly pointless if the app doesnt use that data to spit out procedural next scenes or story ideas based on your input and choices.

I'm still new to using its more robust features but I find it quite handy for organizing my brainstorming thoughts and the blog post of the day feature has extremely helpful new advice about principals of writing. I find myself opening the app almost daily just to view those important lessons.

It's a great planning app. It allows me to see my book all the way through without having written anything down yet. The only issue that I've been able to find is a limit on how many characters you can plug in. Although I haven't needed more than it offers, I know some people will. Overall, it's a really good app.

This app needs way more freedom to change & add things. My novel doesn't have a character that can be considered "the" antagonist because it takes place in a huge Galactic war, there are hundreds of bad guys & hundreds of good guys. I had to look up what a chorus is & my book doesn't have that either. This app isn't adaptable to war centered "hard" sci-fi with brutal realism & multiple plot points in one novel. 6 characters? Try my 60+ fully developed characters, whom all matter for the story.

Color me impressed. I'd pay to have an ad free version but the ads aren't very invasive. This tool should help novice writers to straighten out plot points and sort the chaff out of their stories; I'm going to attempt to write a 10k with this as a guide, we'll see how it goes!

Geez. Don't be down developer. I read your response to one of your reviewers and its alarming how you responded in removing this app instead of improving it. Sure, it is rough in the edges if some aren't used to bulletin type of character aligning. I do like that it is minimalistic. Plus, some people do appreciate this so please focus on improvement, plausible suggestions and positivity, ok? Look at the big picture and not on the small dust at the corner of the frame. 😄

Ron. P. Apr 26, 2019

Just fiddling with it now. It shows tremendous potential with organizing the plot. My only real concern is that maybe it could be better if the characters section added more options? Like an archetype subsection? All in all a great app though!

I actually like this app, playing around with it for a while it would of made a nice writing tool, but the FORCED AD's at random times is unbearable. I Unistalled for that reason alone, hit me up when you remove your AD's or a way to Cheaply Buy to remove AD's. A program like this I would pay no more then $2. Anything more would be a waste of your money.

Basically the app works by entering information about your plot and characters and then pointing out things to improve/positive notes. While the reports can SOMETIMES feel harsh, and only 6 characters CAN feel restrictive, in the end it just forces you to pick out those whom you feel are important, thus making you know your story better. Absolutely amazing

This app was great! I think my favorite part— and the most useful part— was seeing the explanations of why stuff often works or doesn't in a story, so I can eventually make my own mental "reports." It would be great to see more information of that type. Maybe I should just take a class on literary theory XD

Nice app, but i found it limited in how you could assign roles. My story centers on two worlds, each with its own heros, villians, and support characters. In order to map out both sets, i would have to map them seperately, which isnt worth it. Deleting
