Native Land

Native Land is a resource to help North Americans learn more about their local history. It's designed to help you see what indigenous territories and languages might have and still do exist around North America, including where you live. Treaties are also mapped.

This is an ongoing project and more territories are added regularly.

Incredible. I'm speechless. Well designed, completely researched and documented. I was able to find info from this perfect program that was almost impossible to find elsewhere. Congratulations, whomever is responsible for this, should be proud.

** Updated- the changes made to the app makes navigation much easier and app no longer freezes! Love the updates! It's an excellent concept and had potential to be an incredible resource but navigation could use some work and it freezes a lot. It would be amazing if you could see all the overlays on the map at once. Overall I really appreciate that there is an app like this available (and I wish you the best with any improvements you plan to make) and I would definitely still recommend!

The idea of this is great. Execution could use some work. I'm on a Note 10+ and the top search bar is so far up that I trigger my drop down menu. I have to precisely touch the bottom of the search if I want to enter information. Maps should be loaded at any view not just when you enter an address. As a feature suggestion, there should be an easy way to share a map through social or messaging natively as oppose to screenshots. If those things would be modified and working flawlessly - 5 stars!

Gave it a 3 because the idea is stupendous. I am intrigued by it so much and want to learn more. However, the functionality of the app is horrendous. It won't let me pan the map, search for land, OR move between the map, resources, and other tab. It needs some techie help.

I am giving this app 5 stars for support because I know it is a work in progress. It is good for seeing the lands of nations but should also have an option such as seen on the website which shows all lands at once without clicking anywhere. It will be great seeing the finished product, as most indigenous territories outside of North America have not been mapped.

I spent almost 3 days trying to search for the information that I was able to find in a couple minutes using this app. I imagine it is the most accurate and easiest tool available to people to see the very simple fact. You are on stolen land. From who, when, and how can you show respect to those offenses? Thank you to the developers for this vital tool. I will be recommending it to everyone.

Initial startup problems but it loaded after a short time. I think this is a great idea but is definite need of expansion to include other tribes across the entire U.S. I'll be keeping this installed on my phone in hopes that there will be later updates. EDIT: Just realized you can drop a pin to learn more about your area. I think instructions upon first use would be extremely beneficial to new users!

First off, this is a great idea, and I can see how this can be quite informative. One suggestion for improvement would be to include info of the native lands of the rest of the contents and islands since they are shown on the map included. However, I notice a couple of problems. One was that some of the links don't send you to the right website for certain tribes. The other is that you are missing a couple tribes, like the Navajo.

The website is fantastic, but this app did not work for me. It started to load a location, and then sat on a loading screen without doing anything else. I uninstalled and reinstalled, and it did the same thing. I suggest not bothering with the app and just using the website itself.

This is bull. I read about this app just today in a Smart News article. The article pumped this app up so much,I had to give it a try.Long story short....The app don't work. Stuck in loading phase. Tried to install twice. Same thing, a map of mid west USA and the forever loading that doesn't load. Speaking of loads..this apps a load.

Awesome idea for an app. However none of the links to the tribes for the area I live in worked. They all resulted in 503 errors. I'm fine to look them up myself but it would be great to see this app be fully functional as I feel it's such a vital tool for information for those of us who want to learn more about the native land we live on and to be more culturally aware. I look forward to seeing this app grow.

It's not working, App starts loading but doesn't load anything. Even if you type a search in a specific area. I'm using a Galaxy Note 10, at home on Wifi, Cellphone is updated to with latest updates.

Sadly the app didn't work at all for me. The concept intrigued me a lot, but i open the app and it sits on a loading screen indefinitely. I have a Samsung Galaxy S10, so hopefully it gets updated. Once it's fixed I'll update my score

Took a while for the map to load but it works. You need to tap a location to show what is in that area. Need to figure out if it can show all tribe locations at a glance. It's interesting.

Needs more, it freezes and gets stuck on the spinning circle. It's a great concept and is needed for sure to spread knowledge. Keep working on it. 🙌🏽

Works great! Detailed current map allows you to easily pick what area you're looking for and provides links so you can learn more about the natives that inhabited the lands. Love it!

Nic. T. Oct 20, 2020

Inaccurate and vague. Ojibwa tribes for example, and many others are not represented and many tribes are generalized and overlaid on the map. The map doesn't actually show the regions unless you specifically search an area. When you click on the link to a tribe, it doesn't give you any information on the tribes beyond it's spelling and pronunciation.

Will support this app because being a native american, i like the idea of knowing the native lands of where i visit, so i can pay respects to my native brothers and sisters spirits (especially if i have to do any ceremonies). It does need some optimizations though, as it won't stop the loading on the maps.

Dav. A. Jun 10, 2020

I checked where I'm from and I was disappointed to see it's not accurate. I know the history of my native land and I'd appreciate if it is factually represented in an app like this. Thanks for putting this together. My review is not intended to trash you or your app. As an indigenous person, I appreciate it. We need this.

Stuck in loading screen, force closing and reopening does not fix. Clearing cache does not fix. Wifi and 5G available, GPS connection active--permissions given does not fix. This is on a Google Pixel 5 Android OS phone.

Can't open the app. I've used before and it now it is not working.

Jas. K. Jan 26, 2022

Very cool app to see who's land you're actually loving on. 100/10

Cai. J. Oct 13, 2020

Slow startup. After 5 minutes it still said loading. Closed and restarted the app, still loading for a few minutes, so I uninstalled it.

Rik. S. Nov 22, 2018

Altogether a great idea, but seriously annoying (and misleading) in the sense that one gets the idea this is a world wide project, until you download and realize, once again Americans think America is the whole world. Seriously! Make it clear this is about America and not the whole planet.

Joy. H. Oct 14, 2020

5 stars for the idea 1 star for the follow through. It seems that the loading issues were never fixed. So disappointed, please fix this so I can promote tf out of this app 🥺 and give you a new rating because 💔

Lev. L. Jun 28, 2020

This is a really good idea, I like how there is the option to submit corrections. I'm not sure if this set up this way or not but I hope that people are able to submit corrections regardless of whether or not a tribe is federally recognized

cou. Mar 23, 2021

The idea of the app is okay. But the app itself is trash. Jenky, doesnt load proper if it loads at all. Come back when you have a working app.

Ali. D. Oct 15, 2019

Not sure what's up, but the app will not load at all, and reloading only means a recurring error message.

Ali. S. Oct 31, 2020

Has some work to do still but overall the app is an amazing idea. It's important to support things like this from the beginning even while working out the kinks. Can't wait to see how this grows.

As far as I'm aware the information is accurate and clearly presented. I never have Technical issues with this app, and am grateful for the information it provides.
