It was great at first, but then, all of the sudden, I can't access the "today's hints" or "community" parts of the Spelling Bee game. I tried a help "chat" but the advice I was given didn't fix the problem...uninstall the app, re-install and login again. Pretty frustrating not to be able to use the entire app.
It takes way too many clicks to reach the Sunday variety puzzles, which just open in a browser window. Also, it doesn't include the "color" info in the print edition about the puzzle and its constructor. A paid subscription should include more, not less.
Signed up with a deal through Play that was supposed to include the Times and crossword. Some issue had me being charged even though I paid upfront for a year. After getting it handled through two chats and a phone call, I now don't have access to the crossword. Zero chance I'll resubscribe after dealing with this. I don't even care enough to go through contacting anyone to get it corrected. Couldn't be more disappointed with how all of this was handled
I use this every single day, so obviously I'm happily addicted, but.... the fact that the Sunday puzzle tricks often don't work is a huge bummer. I play everything on my phone because the laptop interface is clunkier and slows me down. Sometimes Spelling Bee doesn't capture all my words. And wordle. I have to go to The Morning newsletter to find it. I work on Sunday mornings and sometimes that isn't published by the time I leave for work. That is annoying to me.
Rip-off. I subscribed thinking I'd get loads of quizes and puzzles. Nope. There's a few free ones, but everything else you need to pay additionally for. Not only that, some of the free stuff isn't even in the app, it's just links to the website, very poor designed app.
Fun enough, but absurdly expensive. The full collection costs several hundred dollars (US) when summed up, and you likely spend hundreds more over the course of a subscription. Perhaps NYT crossword fans are very wealthy. Perhaps people think a crossword collection is worth several hundred dollars. Maybe no other crossword will do. I can only guess.
The recent update makes it impossible to open the hints to the Bee in a separate app, making it extremely cumbersome to switch between the two. There's a button on the hints - "read in app"- but it doesn't work. Nor does the comments button.
Spelling Bee is absolutely unplayable now. The fonts are way too large, and the layout of the shuffle, delete, etc., buttons just make this problem that much worse. After less than 30 seconds of playing, I had to stop. Whoever came up with this redesign and the idiot who approved it should both be fired, then tarred and feathered and forced spend the rest of their lives working in Times Square letting tourists take pictures with them in filthy, trashy Elmo costumes. And I'm being generous!
I live in New York. I take the train to work. If I have started the puzzle and then open it when I am not connected to the internet all the entries I put in while not connected are erased when I reconnect. Huge bug. Also, for some reason the screen seems less responsive in the puzzle. I think I have put a letter in, but it didn't register. I have to stay longer on the letter DNA be more forceful. Very odd.
Aargh!!! I don't know what was changed in the past 2 days, but I despise it, because A) I can no longer open the hints in a separate screen from the puzzle, and B) when I click on the comments icon, nothing happens. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app but it didn't work.
Long time subscriber, love the games, but one star until you add NIGHT MODE for all the games! You can do it for the crossword, and you can pay a MILLION DOLLARS to buy Wordle (which is always in night mode), so I think you can pay a developer to write some code for swapping some colors. It's time.
I recently purchased the Games subscription. Some of the puzzles in the app are incorrect and leave off squares for the full clue answer. It is nice to have access to the archive, however, if the puzzles aren't correctly displayed then what's the point of playing?
Great app. Still new to it. User interface isn't intuitive but I'll pick it up I'm sure... though with good design the organization/logic would be a bit more apparent.
Spelling Bee has become unplayable. In the last week, the font has become so large that the game is three screens long. All of the controls (enter, delete, shuffle) are way below the game board, and the list of words entered is a total mess. I submitted a request, including screenshots, but only received a canned response
Latest update is horrible. Broken hint and community links and now the app has a built in browser so you click the link and it opens *over the game*. I'm thoroughly annoyed that I've paid the subscription fee for the games and they keep subcontracting Frogger programmers to develop the apps. I won't be renewing.
The more I use this app, the more I love it. I discover new features and tricks that make the NYT Crossword app better every time I use it. I've read through the negative reviews and... well... y'all need to RTFM. Thank you NYT for building and MAINTAINING an excellent app. It's worth every penny.
Since the last update, installed on 4/8/22, when solving the Bee & trying to use either Today's Hints or Community, they do not open in a separate browser window. They both open over the top of the Bee, making it virtually impossible to use them, because you can't switch between the Bee & the help.
I love this app. I never thought I would ever be able to solve a crossword puzzle, but I started reading the puzzle comment and word blog, and I began to understand how to solve a crossword and I usually solve and less than an hour but my best time is 27 minutes I think this is helping me to spell better and it makes makes me think more about the clues and I've heard it's like aerobics for the brain and I love it love the app too
Overall great, and I love doing crosswords, but one issue that is very annoying is that occasionally when I click the right arrow to the next clue, it will instead go to a random square in the bottom right corner. This happens pretty frequently, on every crossword, and while it doesn't affect the actual crossword itself, it is very annoying. That is my only issue with this app.
The subscription is already pretty high considering you can get crosswords for free from plenty of apps, but I love the New York Times and wanted to support their journalism. Turns out, they double charged me and I have been trying to get them to refund the duplicate charge for 12 days with the WORST runaround I have ever gotten from any company ever. Do not give this app your payment info unless you're cool paying double the price and never seeing your money back again.
Ugh. Latest update causes spelling bee hints to open internally so it's no longer possible to switch easily between the hints and the puzzle itself. I thought everyone knew you should never force users to browse without a browser. Please introduce a "hints open externally" setting ASAP.
The NYT is so disrespectful to its PAYING customers. The issue with the huge font size in the Spelling Bee has been ongoing for weeks now. It has taken the fun out of the game by making it almost unplayable. We have alerted you, and nothing has been done. You have to scroll down just to delete a letter. The page with the word list cannnot display how many words you've found, and all of the words you've found cannot be fully displayed. I'm using the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Great when it works but the latest update has rendered the Spelling Bee community and hints totally inaccessible on Note 9. Additionally, the grid appears in a pop-over window now. Not a good update.
I loved this app but giving it 1 star because there is still no resolution on the Spelling Bee display errors. The type face is so large, it is difficult to play. Please fix, NYT!
Until a few days ago the app worked perfectly. Then it stopped altogether. It won't open period. I have sent several messages to Google Play with no response. We are paying for an app that doesn't work! Help!
I've been using the app for over a year now to do the crossword. While I love the puzzle, I can't say I'm enamored with this app. The Android app seems to lag well behind the iOS version. The keyboard is often unresponsive and difficult to use. You can't see your stats after you close the puzzle. But most infuriating, when I go to the archive, why does it drop me on some random month? Why does it not show me the month and year that we're currently in? Overall quite disappointed.
Game stopped uploading new puzzles Aug 28th. My bill is paid and I am current, but I no longer have access to the games I paid for. No response from Google customer service who manages my account. Pathetic customer service and a disappointing product. Problem fixed! Product works fine now.
Since the change in the Spelling Bee, I can no longer access comments. I don't like that the hints window now overlays the game window. Before, I could have them open side by side, which was much easier.
[Update: Still not properly scaled. 21/4/22] I have played spelling bee, done the mini, worked on many crosswords for several years. BUT I need to tell you the latest app updates now make it look like a child's game. Everything in Spelling Bee is huge on the screen. (Samsung S22 Ultra on highest resolution and Zoom of screen to lowest possible level.) This shouldn't be happening. It is so annoying I no longer enjoy using the app so won't be resubscribing. Please fix.
