Onitama - The Strategy Board Game

Immerse yourself in an ancient Japanese setting and discover Onitama, an exciting, fast-paced strategy game! Onitama is somewhat reminiscent of chess and rather addictive with its dynamic game mechanic in which warriors face off so their master may win the game. Concentration and luck are the only weapons you'll have at your disposal! You'll need to fully master mind and body to defeat your opponents.

THINK STRATEGY!
Every opponent has four warriors and one elder at their disposal. The objective is simple: win the battle. To do so, you must either capture your opponent's elder or take their place in the temple arch. The game is easy to play, but you'll need time to become a true master. Although, not really... Onitama is the ideal strategy game for exercising your mind, as you'll have to think ahead about moves! The moves you're allowed to make are determined by five cards which are drawn at random, shown face-up, and shared between players. Each card corresponds to an animal and sets out a specific move that you have to follow. When you play a card, you must place it between you and your opponent and pick up the previously played card, and so on. This way, both players have the exact same chance of winning the game.

IT'S ALL ABOUT ANALYSIS…
The key to success in this simple, elegant type of combat is to stay calm and concentrate. The Shrine of Onitama is a sacred ground where foresight is necessary. Animal spirits will guide you on the perilous path and allow you to gain true wisdom. In short, it's an elegant and simple game that captures the essence of martial arts. The game design and calligraphy will make your gaming experience a unique and unforgettable one.

Enjoyed the board game, and this app version did a good job at adapting it. The only thing that I wish was in this is a button to replay the same game and/or rewind a step at a time when playing solo with the bot. It's something that I feel like "should" be there as kind of a training/practice thing, but it's not. Sometimes I wanna go back to see what I could've done differently or try out different tactics/strategies. I don't know how hard that would be to implement, but one can hope, I guess.

Apart from this just being one of the best/most elegant board games ever created/designed... The digital edition is implemented extremely well. Works well even on small screens. I do not do online play. So can not speak for that. AI and 2 player/pass and play for me. I have not played enough to judge how big a challenge the AI is but it seems to handle itself quite well. It provides a challenging game and will take advantage of your mistakes.

Onitama is the very definition of easy to learn, but difficult to master! I love how it produces quick, tactical, chess-like engagements that have the capacity to dramatically shift with each turn - don't get complacent with a 4-1 lead, and don't give up if you're 3 men down. The only feedback I'd give is better artwork (and animation?) for the pieces would be nice. All around, an awesome game!

Great game, although it is a bit of a pain to play on the phone. The app is quite buggy. The chat doesn't work well, in fact sometimes it won't show any message unless you reboot the game. The game itself suffers frequent crashes, maybe there's a memory leak. Sometimes you cannot add any buddy to your list because the "+" button is not responsive. I have played several games online and my stats are still showing 0 games played. Also, I added my personal avatar from the web page but it is not showing in the app.

Great little game. It's very chess-like, but the randomized movement cards and the way they're swapped between players makes it more interesting and fun, despite the very simple rules. My only complaint is that the hardest AI is way too easy! It just gives away pieces sometimes for no reason. But otherwise a great game supported by a great app.

I like the game. It requires some strategy but is not nearly as complicated as chess. The "motif" (japanese martial arts) hangs together well and seems to go along with the way the game works. I recommend it but be aware of two things: 1. The game sometimes (not often.. twice in about 3 days of playin) crashes *hard*.... Knocks you all the way out with no way to recover a game in progress. 2. So far it has been ad free. Go figure. No idea why but it seems surely that will change.

Top notch production, amazing for a free app. The two lower levels of the AI are a bit of a push-over, but on the highest level it gives me (for one) a good challenge. Wish list to improve this great app even further: 1. Option to hand-pick the cards for a game, all or some (and randomise the rest, as in the Santorini app). 2. Inclusion of the 5 missing promo cards and those 6 cards from the Japanese first edition that didn't make it into the American edition. 3. Option to design and save your own custom movement cards (one can always dream...).

great game. i have the game and all the expansions at home. wish there was a way to get the one on the app for free as I already paid for it outside of the game. 2 complaints though. no way to turn off the chat, and games with friends should be turn based instead of timed. i should be able to take my turn, and then leave the app till my friend takes theirs, that might be a while from when i took mine. we all lead busy lives, and this would be an improvement

Onitama the board game is great! 5 stars, no question. For the app, expect account recognition issues. For some reason, my account isn't recognized after I've received a ranking. I started a new account under the same email address, and the same thing happened: won't recognize login credentials forcing me to create a new account. Very frustrating if you're a competitive, serious player. I tried to resolve issue in the app, but no options were available.

Amazing chess-like game. The pieces move differently every time, depending on the cards you have. I love the standard Japanese theme. I would recommend to add an auto-resign option for the online games (e.g. if your opponent does not touch the screen during 60 seconds they lose), because waiting for 30 minutes when they might've left the cell phone unattended is a pain. The AI for "Solo" play is too weak. There are no ads! I love this app

Wow! My brother from another mother and I downloaded this to play something different in the online multiplayer realm and to say we were pleasently suprised would be an understatement. No in-game interruptions or disconnects. The UI could use a little work but the gameplay is simply flawless. Strategy without over complication. Smooth timed gameplay. We both love it. How about different shaped boards to take gameplay to a whole new level? Overall...the game is fantastic!

Great pass-and-play game with interesting mechanics. Intelligently encourages thinking about the best move each turn as last used card is then given to the opponent, meaning you need to think about which card to keep. Only problem is the AI is kinda easy. Even on the hardest difficulty it makes pretty dumb moves, though never moves that could lose it the game.

It's a perfect adaptation of the award winning board game. It's an addictive game that's easy on the rules but deep on tactics. It's a game that's very easy to learn but difficult to master. This app faithfully and flawlessly ports the game to Android with no glitches and beautiful graphics. The fact that you get to download and play this full game for free is something other game publishers should take note.

Tried alot of different game apps on my phone and uninstalled most of them almost straightaway. I like this one though. Suits the way I think. Only complaint; I optioned onto the 'Tough to Beat' AI level quite early on (the apps 'toughest' level) but I don't find it challenging enough, beating the AI about 80+% of the time! And occasionionally it makes plain stupid moves. Could benefit from an AI play engine enhancement. Great game all the same though. And there is option to play others online.

This is a great implementation of the game. Onitama is deeply strategic and it's interesting how you set up your own success or failure by handing your opponent their next move. This gets 4 stars from me because the easiest AI is too advanced for a new player to beat without getting lucky. This does not encourage me to stick around and try to play harder levels. I want to see an easier beginner level and more intermediate levels, and an additional tutorial on strategy (not just mechanics).

This is a great game, a great concept of a game, and is a great way to play the board game on the go. I own the board game and highly recommend it, but this gives me a way to hone my skills when I don't have somebody to play with me. My only complaint with this app is where the settings buttons are located. They're located directly next to / on top of the right-most piece, meaning whenever I go to move that piece, I hit the settings button 8 times out of 10. Very frustrating.

Excellent game that would serve as a good way to ease someone into chess--Onitama has a smaller board, fewer pieces, fewer types of pieces, fewer possible moves, illustrations of available moves, a more approachable 'card' mechanism, etc. But, it retains the need for strategy and planning ahead. A+. Oh, and it's gorgeous with a nice UX. Note: The in-game hamburger button / grab handle is too close to game elements and should be moved (either up to opponent's area or lowered a bit)

Fun chess alternative. Great to learn to think ahead in a way that in chess sometime is more intimidating (amount of possible choices is reduced). Regarding the APP, I found the "Hard AI" more "stupid" than the "Medium AI". Sometimes it just made some moves that didnt make sense, like exposing to die when there was a other safe alternatives. Possible improvements: - More skins - Better AI - Option to chose between global timer or turn timer (e.g. 5, 10 or 15 secs per turn)

In need of more work. Fun game play, but buggy app, and some bad design choices. Why can't I offer a game to my buddy while he's offline? Now I gotta coordinate through a messaging app so we both get online in onitama at the same time, which isn't always easy cause going online can be buggy (password not recognized etc). Menu design is jumbled, icons make hardly any sense, hard to find your way back once you left a screen. Could be a lot of fun, but the clunky design spoils it a bit.

This game is one of my favorites. The app is perfect when playing. I do have some complaints, however. There should be a way to search and add friends without them online. It's awful I can't even add a friend I'm playing with if they are offline. There also needs to be a way to challenge and start games without the friend needing to be online, like Words with Friends or Chess/Checkers by Post allow; devs should take notes from those apps for match making. It also badly needs move notifications.

A. G. u. Jan 14, 2020

Overall, a great game, but I think it lacks several settings and options that could make it better: - a search engine to find players by the name - during gameplay, having access to setting a player as friend or banned. At the moment this option is only available with online players, but usually you want to use this option during or after play, not having the chance to do so if the player goes offline right after having played. - a system to report unfair or inapropriate behaviours

A. G. u. Oct 23, 2018

It's good. Sort of simplified, modified chess. Developing strategy is interesting. I lost in 3 moves. Eel, dragon, tiger. I haven't played multiplayer. I went straight to difficult. I'm winning most games, but still fall into some traps. Games take me about 10 min now. Probably will get to 5 or less when I get better.

Love the game but the app needs a lot of work. First off, whenever I play a game online it takes sometimes two full minutes to load the game (and no less than one minute). So I can't play multiple games at once as a result.. Periodically the app will randomly log you out even during a game. The chat feature is extremely inconsistent. Sometimes it lets you chat one on one with the person you're playing, and other times it takes you to the public lobby

A. G. u. Sep 22, 2018

Great gameplay! What an awesome abstract strategy game! I think the online mode needs a bit of work though. An issue is when your opponent leave or is afk, you have to wait through their whole clock. Maybe give a much shorter time with increments per move. Also a notification system to notify you when your opponent has made a move would be great.

A. G. u. Mar 24, 2020

Love the actual game, the app needs work. Being someone who only cares to play with people I know, The process to get someone as a friend and initiate a game with them is comically bad. And you just can't add someone as a buddy unless they are online, nor can you send them a game invite. Incredibly difficult in the app. Also got have to suffer through an intro animation every time to access a game, it's tedious when flipping between two games.

A. G. u. Oct 11, 2018

This is easily my favorite strategy game, and the mobile adaptation does it justice. The interface is easy to use, the graphics are lovely, and the music is appropriately relaxing. It even has a pass and play mode to use with friends. I also haven't noticed hardly any ads, which is surprising for a free game.

A. G. u. Nov 1, 2018

I'm hooked on this game and this almost never happens. My only complaint is that even the hardest AI opponent sometimes seems to make obvious mistakes. I doubt I'm all that good at Onitama, but I didn't have to play many games to get to the hardest level and start beating it. Make it harder! also suggest that you give players a way to earn access to the expansions, like if they've played at least a certain number of games against human opponents, or if they've won a certain number of games against the AI opponents.

Flawed, needs improvement. There are not enough cards to use for a variety of moves or tactics. There is a problem with the AI as I keep getting the same cards over and over. Two stars because I like the idea, the concept is great. Easy to learn and would have been fun to play otherwise. I love the music. The musician did a great job giving this game an oriental feeling. Provide more cards with a wider variety of moves without too much repetition. And then it will be better.
