Open Canal Map

Downloaded but unable to open. It crashes on opening. Does it not work with android 8.1? Thanks for update. Now working and proved to be useful on the boat.

I have just reinstalled Open Canal Map and it appears that W3W references are no longer available on the map. Have they been removed or have I missed a setting.

I used to love this app. As a liveaboard continuous cruiser I used this app on a regular basis and must say that I found the app was perfect before the most recent update which has made me want to remove the app entirely. The previous layout was perfect, the Map was smooth, uncluttered, clear and to the point. There was no need. To change the app, I really dislike the update :(

Tom, thank you so much for this app! I'm going to install it on my parents' phones as well! If you wouldn't mind me encouraging you to continue coding lock miles, I'd find that incredibly useful too! Only 'issue' I've found is when I tap on a symbol such as a water symbol, the search bar and menu disappears completely. But I love this app so much already!!

Old data like closed towpaths or locks, etc looks/get cluttered from 2017 info showing on app map. That was just on one small area of canal. Maps need updating monthly at least, deleting old info. Amendments can be from any user, not just the person who added it. Especially at this time where Locks, Services, and Marinas etc. had to close due to Covid 19. This and any other important information on closures etc. is more necessary than old data.

Firstly, thanks so much for all the work on this! It would be great if the info was in layers that could be turned on and off e.g. 3Words, stations, stoppages. Also town names often fail to display e.g. Market Drayton, Brewood. Update Jun 2020: no apparent changes. CRT alerts often displayed twice and in the wrong place.

Recently went on a canal boat holiday and this app was superbly helpful. The only issue I found was that the map would not load properly every time and would require an app restart. Maybe its my phone. A map scale would also be handy although I'm not sure how easy this would be to implement.

I'm. Shockingly bad at navigating my way around the canals, despite using them all the time, but this, this is the app I've waited for. Top work!!

Brilliant, up to date and works well. Has been essential to a big trip. Highly recommended

I don't understand the point of the app... It's just google maps with less functionality? I thought that you could measure distance from one point on a river to the next? I can't see any way to do that. If there is more functionality I'm unaware of please let me know, and I'll be happy to revise my rating... I can't really see the benefit of using this over google maps though currently

Brilliant app and use of technology. A really good addition to paper maps and gives a great view of nearby towns and villages to get. Have you thought about putting nearby bus stops on the maps? Really good. Great job.

Brilliant app !! Took a little while to get my head around because I couldn't find a menu or help page, so a bit of trial and error on getting info and working out the legend! But now I'm using the app more and more whilst at the helm rather than picking up my copy of Nicholson! PS the white dots are km marks (Nicholson uses mile markers hence the confusion 😕). Still not sure how to add new items as a contributor ....... ?

Very limiting use as a canal map for someone who lives aboard a narrowboat. I find using the menu to open the Google maps version is much better as you can see what is nearby. Also lots of water points and elsan points aren't marked and I still use the Nicholson guides for that.

A nice app with a lot of detail. My only gripe is that when pinching to zoom, the map keeps turning on the screen. It would be better if you could lock the screen so that North is at the top of the screen, and stays there.

Very useful resource that works well, lots of info about closures and canal surroundings. Downloading maps for offline use was a bit flakey but worked in the end. Thanks for all the work you put into the app.

Text is too small...it's really useful, informative & clearly has serious potential to be excellent, but when I zoom in, the text for each feature, stays so tiny that it's impossible to read.

It's ok as a freebie. But what is it with all the random words. I'm guessing that's the modern world area codes but jeeze very distracting. other than that I can't seem to add any useful data.

Up to date and easy to use. Essential for any newbie to know exactly where everything is and contains excellent information on restrictions and stoppages too. I would not be without it.

Love this app. The 4 star rather than is the information text is IMO too small, hard to read even with glasses on. Update. Very fast reply from developer explaining the issue. Have just moored for the night having chosen my spot using the app. Well impressed.

Great app, shows where you are on the map on the move and has been a massive help on our trip. Would be amazing if you could add markers where you want to stop.

Very buggy. Tried it on several different android devices & it has issues downloading maps & crashes regularly. Re installing it fixes the issue for a very short while.

Very useful App both on the canal and when out and about exploring.

Absolutely brilliant. Only ever-so-slight downside is that there is no legend [the vast majority of symbols are self-explanatory, but, eg, there is nothing to indicate the distance between the towpath 'blobs' - m or Km?].

Brilliant app. Very useful for getting along the canals as well as finding facilities, shops and transport to and from canal. I'm curious to know what the additional markers are along the K&A at the Crofton flight I.e. /// trombone.liquid.headed and ///uttering.whirlwind.takers? Might be elsewhere in the app but only found these so far! UPDATE: Just followed the link to the developers website and found my answer. 😊

A good app to instantly find ones whereabouts. Good that it lists upto date stoppages for the journey ahead. An excellent scroll. Im still waiting for a canal app that lists all moorings availability and nearby shops ! It would be good if canal and towpath users could fill this info in somewhere on app awaiting clarification ! Thanks anyway. Il keep it for now.

Use this app for every journey, tells me what I need to know on any route. Others have already requested the same minor improvements that I would like so I won't harp on, just thank Tom for taking the time to produce a really useful tool :)
