I had no problem with them switching to the paid model. It's the price of an energy drink a month. Detailed forcasts and an honest take on the snow. Straightforward and open about where the data comes from and what it means for the snowy forecast. With individual meteorologists focusing on different areas of the country you are getting state specific analysis. Obviously not always right, comes with territory, but from my experience over the years they are pretty accurate and always honest.

This app is so useful to decide where to go - and so much information in a small space! You can get as much detail as you want on quite a few factors - snow and weather forecast, snow history, web cams, etc. Easy to compare different ski areas. A very useful tool! For those with app issues - there was recently a fix for the freezing bug - and customer support is awesome. I had to uninstall/install - took about 30 seconds - and it totally fixed my issue. I don't mind paying for this information - these meteorologists focus on snow forecasts and fill a niche that is very useful to avid outdoors enthusiasts. They work a LOT and deserve to be paid for that work - plus it minimizes interruptions (ads)

I have no problem paying for high quality reports... but the mobile app is terrible. Most of the time it doesn't work, nothing loads when the app is opened and none of the buttons do anything, only going to the Edit button can I actually get to the different mountains and reports. I've had to uninstall and reinstall to get it back to working normally for a day or two before it stops working normally and then time to un/reinstall

Not worth the price. $30 a year for a bunch of features I never access. A lot of what you pay for is hard to navigate. I've never used any of the summer access features, but that's included and drives the cost up unnecessarily. You can't just opt in to a winter only subscription. Upcoming changes coming to continue to force people behind their paywall without more affordable subscription options. I have a feeling that this app is next in line to be deleted.

Excellent snow reports. I've used Open Snow for years and love the detailed snow reports and forecasts. I've never had technical issues. This is one of the few apps I believe in enough to get the paid version. It's bundled with Open Summit which is my go-to for planning outdoor adventures in the summer.

Update: When in life can you say that something just gets better and better? This app and OpenSnow is one of those rare cases. These folks know their stuff and are dedicated to giving us as much useful information as possible. If you ski, ride, or just want the best weather forecast for the mountains, you absolutely want this! I completely depend upon it! I love this app and the weather discussions! It's the best I know! So good and helpful that I subscribed for another year!

I started following Joel and OpenSnow in the 2007/2008 season. Constant improvements, tons of free stuff if you're living on a ski-bum budget or a reasonable yearly fee to allow the meteorologists to predict your next powder day. Joel and team explain the science behind the forecasts and changing tech that allows better guesses if you're having a powder-day at your favorite mountain so you know what's driving the 3-10" forecast for tomorrow and do you need to take time off or not based on the variables and chances/uncertainty. The daily snow forecasts are some of the best in the industry (which is why major ski resorts have contracted with him to be able to broadcast their for forecasts) and it's not just Colorado, or the west - there are forecasts (and local forecasters) that cover most of the ski areas in the US... and yes they do regularly nail the differences (like 2" vs 6") between mountains that are only a few miles away (like Vail/Beaver Creek & A-Basin/Keystone/Breckenridge to name a few since I'm CO based). Bottom line: if you're not a skier or boarder, you just won't care. If you are, you need this app like you need bindings and boots. Executive summary: essential for the snow enthusiast.

Some basic features were nice in the free version. Deleting and using a more helpful app that doesn't charge $30 for a few months of use. Oh right, there's free options out there with what used to be free on this app. Who cares about you trying to be around for years to come. I'll deal with banners and ads.

Very disappointed to see that the free version doesn't even have 5 day forecasts anymore. The free version is not very informative. I find it bad business practice to continuously take away features that were once free to force people to pay. Looking through my emails, it looks I never received a notice.

Pretty decent info and accessible style. Seems like they haven't worked all the bugs out of the android version. I mostly get stalls and no information after sitting for 10 minutes. Great data connection and modern phone so hopefully they get their execution figured out.

I really like having access to the latest winter weather information. This is a good app, i signed up for the paid service I like it . Staff is doing a good job at continuing to make improvements. The new app keeps feezing even though i uninstalled and re-installed. It takes a coupke of tries sometimes to get it to work.

This app used to help me so much when I was deciding which resort to go to. I'm bummed that it's all but useless now unless you pay an outrageous amount for information you can find free online. I wish there was a basic option for something like $5 that kept all the previous free features since that's all I really need. I would have given this app 5 stars before the change.

Was a great app (have used it for years) until they forced the paid version on everyone. For others upset by the moneygrab here, check out "NOAA weather free". It has point forecasts, radar maps and a weather discussion updated twice per day. I'm deleting this app now, as the free version was stripped of all function. They may as well only have a paid version, the free one is worthless. Sad.

This app is an incredible resource for skiers and boarders. The detailed forecasts are indispensable for planning my day on the hill (and for planning the drive up and/or trips out of the area). Also, the app is fantastic and yet somehow keeps getting better. Please support this dedicated team of weather geeks. You won't be sorry. (I've been a paid subscriber for many years and their small fee is a far better investment in my skiing enjoyment than any gear, lesson or pass I've ever bought).

Used to be my favorite snow report app. The favorites tab that shows the forecasts for your resorts causes the whole app to freeze now, making it useless. Tried restarting phone, closing the app, reinstalling the app, nothing works. Out 30 bucks for the annual plan now, bummer.

Edm. M. Mar 15, 2022

Did vail buy this app? It was good for finding info all in one place, but now is subscription based to see anything and the app crashes constantly. I'm not paying you money(more than the $120k of ppp loans) for something I get for free from NOAA and that hardly works(yes, ive reinstalled...3 times). I understand having ads, but you're not providing any original content. Go to weather.gov to find the exact same forecast for a resort and use each mountains snow report for current snow totals.

Exceptionally good weather forecasts, and beyond just for ski resorts. Reliable, accurate, and very informative - presented in a manner that is just technical enough yet easy to understand. Winter and summer, I use OpenSnow, and in particular Bryan Allegretto's forecasts in the Tahoe and Central Sierra Nevada, as my go-to source for weather information.

Llo. A. Feb 28, 2022

I have used the paid OpenSnow app for several years now. Absolutely the best snow forecast service for skiers! If that weren't enough, the subscription also works for the OpenSummit mountain weather forecast app that gives multi-day forecasts for peaks year-round. At the top of my list for subscription weather apps for outdoor activities.

Many times you get one or the other, structure or substance. This app has both. It's designed and oriented well for finding useful & quality information quickly...AND the analysis & reporting, short-term and long-term are phenomenal.

Tom. M. Mar 1, 2022

Open Snow staff works hard to inform users of how much snow, when, and what quality of snow. The app makea it easy to keep close tabs on your favorite ski areas and their conditions. It is very helpful for planning travel in and out of the mountains. All around great app and product.

Kar. S. Feb 26, 2022

I've been using Open Snow for years. Fantastic weather information for the mountains. I use android, and have had zero issues with the app. Definitely worth the subscription. Highly recommend.

Tyl. W. Feb 28, 2022

I am really enjoying OpenSnow. I think it's easily worth the money for anyone looking forward to snow. I primarily read forecasts for Utah and Jackson Hole, but often end up reading other forecasts just for fun. My only request would be a more consistent time for the forecasts to be released. I like reading them while drinking my coffee in the morning, but the timing often doesn't workout.

Die. S. Feb 26, 2022

The level of entitlement on the 1-star reviews is astonishing. Yes, there is a subscription, but these guys put out quality content that is extremely useful during winter and summer. Keep up the great work!

Mic. M. Dec 26, 2021

Well that's a wrap on what was a good app. It moved to a paid format this season, and you now have to pay about $30/year to use this app at all. They have even limited the most basic "free" features like the daily snow chart. Regardless of the fact that almost all of the info and webcams are free public information. You could atleast look at the basic snow total forecast, but as of yesterday, 12/26 you can no longer even do that. Way to make an already elitist sport even less accessible guys.

Kor. Mar 3, 2022

The app is great, however they removed the ability to see the next few days (ie 3 day) snow report and locked it behind a paywall. Now, it seems nothing is available for free. I understand everybody has got to make money but not offering a lifetime subscription is a shame, and not giving us any snow report is as well. I'll have to uninstall as the app tells me nothing now. It won't even give you hourly weather past 5 hours, I can name 3 apps off the top of my head that do that. Sad

Rac. H. Dec 24, 2021

Too expensive. Replies to other posters say $30 is a small fee but it's not. Other apps charge $1-10 per year or lifetime even. You'd probably make more money charging less because you'd get much higher uptake if it were affordable (e.g 10/100 users * $30 = $300. 50/100 * $10 = $500). Oh well it was a good app while it lasted. I'd also be happy to pay $2/month or so since I don't need the snow forecast in July. Probably change your name though. Free and open software is free.
