Outdoor Survival Guide

There is an outdoor recreation boom sweeping the entire western world and this continent in particular.
There has been nothing like it in the past. Yes, the out-of-doors has always had an appeal for some, but
they have been a small minority. Two decades ago you could go on a canoe trip in the summer months
in the wilderness of Quetico and not see another soul for an entire week. Not today. You are lucky if you
see only three or four canoeing parties a day.
Arctic rivers that have not seen a white man's canoe since the big fur-trading era, today are being
traveled regularly. The old trails of the western mountains, untrodden since the days of mountain men
and early prospectors, are being hiked and backpacked today. During the height of summer, camping
areas in many parks are full. In the past, being a fishing and hunting outfitter was a risky business. It still
is, but today many outfitters in the more popular areas have no difficulty in attracting clientele.
This phenomenon is world-wide. In many of the national parks of Africa, one can see a pride of minibuses
around every lion. I have even met a convoy of two land rovers on safari in the middle of the
Kalahari Desert in Botswana.
The reasons for this outdoor boom are many. A greater interest in wildlife is one. Twenty years ago
hunters and fishermen were the only large groups interested in wildlife. Today, almost everyone has a
casual interest in wild creatures. This interest is not always tempered with wisdom, and is rarely
accompanied by knowledge. At times wildlife management agencies are hampered in their work by
people who prefer to have deer starve than to have them hunted by outdoorsmen.
Other reasons for the outdoor boom are more leisure time, a more affluent society, and better highways
and rapid transportation systems. Thirty years ago, if a New York big-game hunter wanted to hunt in the
Yukon, it took him five days just to reach Whitehorse. Today, he is there in less than a day. But I think
that the biggest reason for the outdoor boom is a spiritual rebellion against our sophisticated, affluent
society. Deep down we hunger for a quieter life, a slower pace, green grass, and the sight of pale blue
wood smoke curling up toward the sky. We want to "get away from it all," but at times we bring it all
with us in the form of tent cities and slums.
Everyone who ventures into the out-of-doors should possess the basic skills for outdoor living. He
should know how to make a good campfire, what types of wood give fast heat for boiling tea, and what
types provide hot flames for broiling steaks. He should know how to paddle a canoe, how to forecast
weather, how to use a compass, what the sudden cry of a bluejay means, and what a bear is up to when
he stands on his hind legs. The average outdoorsman does not have to be a wilderness survival expert,
but he should know the basics. After all, almost everyone can become lost or lose his gear when his
canoe is upset in a choppy wilderness lake.
The outdoorsman should know all this and much more. He should know about the natural world
around him - how it lives and functions. He should know its moods, its sounds, and its signals. But
above all, the outdoorsman must have a code, an outdoor ethic, to ensure that his life and travels in the
out-of-doors are in harmony with nature. Man, like all creatures, is a user. This is how nature created
him. Frequently our use leaves wounds. Every campfire, every hiking trail, every fish caught, and every
grouse shot is a wound. But these are wounds that nature heals and repairs with ease. An outdoorsman
should never leave wounds that will permanently scar. That is what the outdoor code and the outdoor
ethic are all about.

Survival guid app is amazing..it is very informative it has good features.

This is a mid-level app. More detail than for someone who is faintly interested in survival. And not as thorough as a app you'd want as your "survival bible" by your side in case of a major disaster. But, it has everything to consider and gives great references for other books to incorporate in your in depth research. I think this is a great starting point for sure and has been super helpful in reminding us how to sure up our plans, just in case.

I love this app! I have kids so I need something that allows me to go through each area and work on the basics, get a new perspective, and add some new tips and skills before heading out. It's full of helpful checklists and suggested gear. If you hike, bike, hunt, fish, love to roadtrip or enjoy the outdoors in any way you really need this app regardless of your skill level.

What a brilliant app!! This is a great for anyone who loves the great outdoors and adventure. Of course you're not very likely to need to know many of the skills in this app but you never know.. !? It's really interesting and has a whole host of random survival situations, from how to collect water in a rainforest to how to survive a stampede. Even if you never venture further than the next town, I'd highly recommend this app.

If you're one of the few people worried about it, you can turn off background data for the app. Outdoor Survival Guide App looks great, easy to navigate, tons of useful information and a night mode which is always appreciated. The only thing that would make it better is an annotation feature (Highlighting and boomarking). Can't wait to dig in and start reading.

This app is written with the long-term view in mind, as opposed to "here's how to build your bug-out bag." I came to it as a complete novice and I feel like it did a really great job. The introduction advised against being the initial book for a new prepper, but I don't think it's above a beginner's level or too advanced. Being geared towards the long-term, it helps actually to have the long view in mind as you start. You know what you're building towards. The writing style is very simple and ea

This outdoor survival app needs to be on every phone. I had this app on my old phone. I definitely recommend this if you're an outdoorsy type. Or if taking the family on a camping trip to a place you have never been before. Or for the apocalypse! This is perfect for the prepper! This and Plant information app.!! I like it. Some parts might be difficult for the beginners to read. Still a good offline app that fricken works. Why not be ready for anything?

The layout is easily navigated, the writing informative, articulate and doesn't lend to making the reader overwhelmed. As I read the sections I found myself thinking the old ways are buried with the underappreciated seniors that built the land we stand on and they did with blood, sweat , tears and a strong back! Never giving up,there was no "I'll try" , DO or DONT DO! If you chose " dont do" then you would be a statistic

Great app, but the ads at the bottom of the screen hide some of the info in the postings. If this gets fixed, I will change my rating. Edit: I never said remove the ads. I was saying to make them unobtrusive. When I can't read everything because an ad blocks the bottom text, that's what I'm referring to.

Very US-centric, but it does provide all the basic grounding information. Worth downloading, definitely, although if you already know anything about the basics you probably know most of the substance of the app. Serves as a nice concise reminder, though, and a good loaner after engaging interest in conversation, or good for discussion paragraphs if presenting to a novice audience unfamiliar with the topic.

Great lot of info for a free app. No bombarding with ads either. No sub fee which I've dealt with a good many times in the apps leading up to this one.

The app is well made. The developer tries to cover almost every single survival situation. I learned a lot about topics and situations I hope I will never experience. Some situations are described in great detail. Some are a bit shallow but they are not that critical in my opinion. Definitely worth downloading.

This app is like a survival bible. It addresses most adverse situations a person might encounter throughout his or her life. The developer then goes on to recommend one or more solutions that are most likely to keep (& anyone with you) alive & pointed in a right direction to get safely out of, or away from, the adversity. There is much, much more expert advice included. A great read & a app you’ll want to keep handy.

Ok, if you were never in the "Scouts" or you were but didn't actually learn anything other then how to correctly fold a flag then this whole series of books is your you. This is the complete collection from over the years and has everything you need to know to survive. Even the "advanced" sections aren't really that advanced, so if you are an actual survivalist this is a waste of time. If you need a good foundation and know what you need to "get by" this is what you want.

This outdoor survival app provides the most important information you need as a individual to survive the elements and environment and your basic health as a whole. I recommend this app highly to those who are in a survival mode and seeking as much factual benefiting information they can in order to stay alive. The most awesome thing though of it all being true to the word of not only the information it provides, but it's completely Free and Offline! I have never found an app so reliable.

This is a very comprehensive survival app. It covers all levels of preparedness. It discusses actually making your preparations (how much, prioritizing), basic survival, and even highlights some aspects of homesteading. It was incredibly densely packed with information and provided a ton of other resources for continued research.

This really is the ultimate guide. The credentials of the developer are second to none. If you want to learn about survival, you won't go wrong starting with this app. It is always good practice to learn from more than one source to ensure that all bases are covered and confirmed. You may find that your memory fails when you're under extreme stress, injured or simply tired and you need a reminder.

I've always wanted to have something for survival purposes on my devices cause to me at least its easier to take with and keep safe. Books are big especially when they contain this much diverse info. In fact this app alone would equal about 4 books. It covers animals, plants, medical and shelter.

Is very interesting, although I wish some of the illustrations were clearer. Plus, it would be nice if we could check, highlight, or annotate the text to fit our needs. Overall, great since it is free.

I downloaded this up because, what the heck, while we're living through a global catastrophe why not read about and prepare for all the other things that could go wrong? Well, there's not much I can do to prepare for a massive meteor impact, but this app has lots of great questions and scenarios to get one thinking about possible courses of events and what plans, materials, etc. would help alleviate stress and suffering during those times. Written simply enough that you don't have to be an Engli

I've had the app for several days. This app has some very solid advice on preparing...not necessarily for the "apocalypse" but for everyday life. I can say developer has done a great job researching this topic and he makes in a very readable style. If you only have a handful of apps for preparing for emergencies, this should be one of them.

Bil. k. Sep 20, 2021

Such a great initiative. The app has literally every information if you are stranded somewhere or need instant medical self aid. The interface is awesome and doesn't consume much space. I think everyone should have this app in their phone. Kudos to the person who made this.

If you have your phone charged in a situation with no service and no local buildings, this outdoor survival guide app is essential. Everything you need is here for you. They dont miss one thing when yalking about the various features this apps offers (theres a lot). From shelters to communication with others, this app covers all necessary factors considered when in a survival situation. 100% kepping this on my phone no matter what. P.S Good App Format

Working from the basics to specific skills and strategies, this guide covers it all, including the psychology of being lost. The text is straightforward, succinct, and Sobieck’s expertise conveyed in a reasoned, calm tone—just what one needs in an emergency situation. A really cool in-the-wild insurance policy.

Its not that useful, i have tested most of the chapters and they dont do as well as i thought. Then it takes a lot of time to read them because they are very long. In a hurry it wouldnt be useful! Also as soon as you go on, an ad pops up
