Compared to WordWeb (which is also good), I felt it has a slightly expanded and easier-to-understand definition of words, so bought the Premium, also for the audio pronunciation. VERY FRUSTRATING that there's no 'switch to Thesaurus' for look ups from external sources, so you have to go back and type in the word manually to get the Thesaurus definition. Helpful that you can create folders to organise look ups!👍🏻 I just wish it would be added to Family Library! 😉 Love it though! 💗
Dropped the $29.99 on my credit card, and I'm not even drunk. Hopefully this will allow me to 1) diversify my lexicon, 2) maintain sobriety for the duration of this month dubbed "Sober October" via the newfound hobby of researching etymology, and 3) build up my credit score. Truthfully, this app did indeed have everything I sought in a dictionary+thesaurus combo app - they just happened to have enough ads to where it made sense to me. Perhaps I'm just too lazy to Google definitions in other apps not solely dedicated to the research of words, but that's fine with me - it's my money and I can do with it what I choose.
Excellent app since I first purchased it, over 15 years ago. So much to learn from language, like drinking vitamins. App layout and functionality is second to none. Love the word of the day feature and widget on my Android. Developer also provided excellent support on an issue, so I can't say enough good about this. Get it, and upgrade to the premium version. You won't regret it.
Large database, concise definitions, reliable app, which is why the premium version is worth the money. Was experiencing some issues after the roll-out of one of the recent updates, which were taken care of swiftly and competently after contacting customer support. Thank you.
The real OED is great and I've used it for the last fifty years but this is not the real OED. The print version spellings are different and more importantly correct. This is more like an American version where it prioritises or in some cases, only gives American spellings in the search results. Does the American OED give the British spelling I wonder? They need to be more honest with the title. More like the OAD.
Last year this day I wrote a review complaining offline mode doesn't work. Every time I open the app internet off only to find database I downloaded is missing and can't show definitions or synonyms. I have to reconnect to the internet for looking up words. So it's been a year and the problem remains unresolved. 🙂🙂🙂
Just downloaded the app and was immediately inundated with ads -- obscenely loud & obnoxious ads, full screen ads, bottom of the screen ads, pop-up ads, timed ads -- essentially, this app is ad-based and uses words from the dictionary as filler. Some ads suggest you've begun the start of a free offline 30-day trial; however, the word "Free" in this dictionay is defined as $29.99. Ouch. Even so, there's no way I found to opt-in to the trial. Proceed with caution -- this app's a mess. Uninstalled.
Pathetic! Let's you use it for a while and then when you look up a word later on it brings up a pop up taking about £26 to upgrade to remove ads etc but if you choose not to then the app closes so you can't effectively use it while keeping ads on their! Terrible and not true to its ethics
Absolutely the best. A must have for anybody serious about having a dictionary/thesaurus. PS: The Offline Mode is not working. Have requested the Dev for a fix. I'll add the two stars when the issue is fixed.
This is a complete and entirely utile dictionary, with a very comfortable ui. In addition to its primary function(s) the app offers many options. After a very thorough review, I found most of the negatve feedback came from those looking for " something for nothing ". Deepest Thanks, Developer(s)
I've seen less ads on late night television. A thesaurus is about efficiency not difficulty. I'd give the developers zero stars if possible. Every time you load it you have to start over with the permissions while dodging click bait. Shame!
Good app, and still the best UK dictionary definitions, also much faster than it used to be. Could really do with a quick way of jumping from a dictionary definition to the thesaurus definition and vice-versa.
Fantastic! The word meanings are ample, simple, straightforward and explanatory. An added thrill is the historical angle to the origin of every word, be they Latin, Greek, French, German or, even Russian! I really love this app.
Need to pay 50 nzd for the full lot, as it will be for work requirements no problems; does have "punctuation marks - full stop - as well, not period :-) ", so very nice. If no 50nzd for full use, maybe 5 stars! I'll need to go through my studies account to pay for the full use of it as I need it for my proofreading courses through U.K. :-)
installes opened and during the first few *seconds* of use while searching the first word I get a regular text ad, a warning to pay for the app and a full screen video ad with sound, and the actual word search doesn't seem to be very good either
The info provided about this app highlights the fact that the audio feature uses a British accent. One would assume the emphasis would also be on British spelling...it is not, it is American.
Don't be fooled. There is a serious bug that makes it unable to download the database for offline use which the app claims it can do. This is the main reason I purchased this app. If not, I would have just used Google. I have spoken to the app developer who does not have a clear explanation as to what is causing this issue. I would say they are clueless. I paid $21.99 (50% discounted 'offer') for this app. It is the most expensive purchase I have made on Google play store -Not worth the money!
This has got to be one of the quickest uninstalled apps ever! I was bombarded with adverts seconds in... I barely got to see the word I was looking for! And for some reason it asks to access your media files? What is that about?
The app is clunky. Just a simple word lookup often results in dropped letters while typing. Words don't always show up. Then, on top of that poor experience, they aggressively upsell the premium version. My respect for OED is severely diminished by this shoddy application.
Iam an older university student and I loved this app for four years without paying a dime;was the best one there is and a huge help to me. Not happy I have to pay for it, I KNOW it's a few bucks, but why? If a thousand people pay the few bucks you have s huge amount in your pocket... Thanks so much for being greedy
Fantastic dictionary and thesaurus , but no dark mode like the concise version, so only 4 stars. Please add a dark mode theme as so much easier to read at night, and looks better.
What a cheat! Yes, you can download it free, but you can't USE it free. Be clear and honest on your offering, MobiSystems, because you just wasted my time and damaged my trust. I'll be uninstalling it right away and looking for something less disingenuous (that's MY word of the day).
I am not sure if it is a real Oxford University dictionary. Word choice for word of the day is amateur mostly and idiotic at times. There are many free apps which are 100 times better than this.
Incredible words that are easily used to understand when broken down. Origins, terms, and more which has helped me to build upon my usage more appropriately and I definitely don't regret that at all.
I am a paid user of this app. Every time I download dictionary database for offline use, after few days I find that the online mode is toggled automatically and again ask me to download dictionary database for offline use. This is really annoying. Please fix this issue. My device is Samsung Galaxy M31s & Android version is 10.0
This application is very helpful but I can't find some words in it. I think thats my only problem. And also the app developer claimed that the app is for offline use but without data I can not search for something on this app. Isn't that quite misleading and abhorable.
very slow. it dies out on you when r offline and want to use it. advert is one of the features that could drive u round the bend.
Still no cloud backup of favourites in 2019. Same goes for every other of your dictionary apps. Meanwhile, every single other dictionary app has implemented that feature. When are YOU going to ? While the Oxford databases are the best by far, your reader is the worst of current dictionary apps. Two other major flaws are the lag after typing the first letter, which then ignores the next letter, and the lack of update of search results when deleting letters, which requires to add another letter.
