Great dictionary, annoying app. It consistently lags when you type, so about half the time it skips the second letter, and the whole word is spelt wrong. For this price, it should be a simpler app that just works. Also a pop-up keeps insisting that you rate the app - so here you are - a 3-star review. Update - 2 stars because after reviewing it keeps prompting for a review.
PROS: Excellent Oxford content. CONS: No “share” feature to select and look up words from other apps. Search functionality is very limited; there’s no full text, example or idiom search. The “smart" search that seems to be happening only slows down the app and never comes up with anything relevant. Favorites don't sync across devices. The interface has an adware-like appearance. In a paid app, I don't want to see "Invite Friends" and "Rate App" on the home screen as if these were features for my benefit. The nagging "rate 5 stars" popup is especially annoying. I much prefer the WordWeb dictionary interface for which currently only the Chambers dictionaries appear to be available.
Bought the previous version and LOVE IT. Now unavailable, but this same content available in a different (unregistered) app. Asking MobiSystems if I can register this version. Wonder if they're related to MobiPocket. I bought roughly $80 of Oxford dictionaries for a Windows PocketPC long ago, and loved the ability to add your own definitions. Miss that feature terribly.
Pros: 1) The most comprehensive dictionary app on Google Play Store. 2) Authoritative & examples used to clarify how words are used . 3) For advanced users of English, this is good for research as well as reference purpose. Cons: 1) No audio pronunciations. 2) Guidance on grammatical usage is absent. I have a hard copy- it is a 2 volume set and they are excellent and worth the price paid for.
This wretched dictionary is a constant frustration. It lets the researcher down at least a quarter of the time, with even fairly common words missing. Where is "bellwether", for instance?
Misses a star as they've seen fit fit to remove date and publication of first use, merely narrowing it down to early, middle or late century. Misses another star for incomplete Latin and Greek origins. Definitely not as good as the single-volume 3rd edition of the Shorter, 1955's Oxford Universal Dictionary on Historical Principles, the best single-volume dictionary the OED ever published, or the more recent two-volume Shorters. And it's -much- shorter. :(
I was very happy with Oxford before. But not now. I mean for free it's just a form of online dictionary. It's not that Oxford app I had before. And offline version costs some money. I don't see a reason to install that. Don't waste time there are another offline dictionaries.
One of the most Excellent Apps I have ever downloaded.. Thank you OED... People need to realize how generous this is, they are giving you a LIFETIME pass, for 25 quid, to the entire Shorter OED, that is the next size down from the volume which is literally tens of books long, and is only necessary for people for access to hundreds of obscure scientific/medical and other words which pertain to acane disciplines.. This should be an essential purchase on anybodies phone.
A highly useful item, indispensable for all genious researchers and the advanced level students of the English language. Thanks for the adept developers.
I love this app and love the Oxford English Dictionary. I've been using this app to write and find synonyms to add variety to my work. I can spend the whole just going through the dictionary. I recommend it, hands down.
I had an expectation SOED would be replete with illustrative quotations, akin to the big OED, within its own scope. That is not so.The app itself behave like a distracted old geezer. I have three dictionaries from this publisher, all paid up for. They at random lose their contents. An infuriating message come on: 'To use the dictionary offline, download the content', something like that. My ISP is giving me a miserable service (no service, actually). How many times do I have to download? I am getting fat from eating at fast food outlets. The very time I need dictionaries, Mobi people play a cute stupid game, erasing the contents and teasing me with 'To use offline, download...'
For growing of my English literature this application is very important to me And I think that Oxford is a great place of English . There is a high level learning system. In one word this application is very helpful and important for students. BRILIANT!
Like others, I couldn't use the special offer to buy the dictionary. Once the trial ends, I can't use the app. After a search for a word, I'm asked to buy the app and, no matter what I do, the app closes.
I have been using this dictionary in hard form for more than 15 years . It is the essence of English language and wisdom of thousands of greatest minds. It can never be described fully. Now it's a joy ❤️ in app.
Curious word omission - "omnist" which is easily found in Merriam-Webster's is not in the Oxford Shorter English Dictionary, with almost twice as many words, allegedly including all new words since 1700. Omnist was introduced by Philip James Bailey, 19th century English poet, in the once very popular long poem "Festus," where he says: "I am an omnist. I believe in all religions." It appears in the 20-volume version. How is it missing here?
An excellent digitisation of the standard work on English usage and etymology. Well worth the one-off cost.
A few teething troubles with the licence sorted out with speed and politesse by Mobisystems. Exemplary customer service. The dictionary itself is a joy to use.
great. take time to read through the content presentation description to take full advantage of what's offered. I was so pleased that I bought the hard-copy.
Would be perfect if it had audible pronunciation like their other version of the dictionary app has.
A dictionary that purports to have 600,000 English words should certainly contain 'beefcake', hardly an archaic or unusual word. I shan't be paying for the registered version. Disappointed.
I love the extent and eccentricity of the English language"s vocabulary and to have the shorter OED in my pocket is delightful.
Its very good and useful dictionary we can learn lots of things from it
Good dictionary but most of all. Very nice support team.
Thanks, I think it is helpful but not every body can afford the fee.
The most comprehensive dictionary app in the market.
This dictionary that I have ever read is very good.
Dictionary content is of course excellent. I received two notifications, on different occasions, of special half-price purchase, which I wished to opt for. But the notifications simply disappeared the moment I tapped on them and I was unable to proceed with half-price purchase, which was very irritating. Also, the Tap to Translate and Word Lookup functions in this app are somehow tied up together. I would normally prefer to use Word Lookup with this app, but translate using Google Translate.
