Packet Capture

Packet capture/Network traffic sniffer app with SSL decryption. Not that feature rich yet, but it's a powerful debugging tool especially when developing an app.
Features:
- Capture network packets and record them.
- SSL decryption using man-in-the-middle technique.
- No root required.
- Easy to use.
- Show packet in either hex or text.

You don't need to setup a dedicated proxy server on your PC. All you need is just your Android device.

Does what it says on the tin, but fairly limited. SSL/TLS capture doesn't work saying could not create file (OnePlus 5T Android 9), so can't decrypt secure traffic, which is most apps nowadays. Also cannot clear captures. I do like it has the option to pick an app you want to capture from. Also, some apps fail to connect, and some domain names aren't resolved in captured data so you see IPs instead. Hope these will get fixed in the future.

Useless. It does not capture everything. I use my phone as a portable hotspot and I wanted to capture all the packets passing through it, including those from and to the devices connected to my phone as an access point and using it to access the internet. Apparently this app only captures packets sent and received by the apps on the phone. Maybe capturing all the packets from the OS can't be done without rooting the phone, but if that is the case then just say so, don't waste my time by promising to do somthing you can't do.

Great app and works well. However in Oreo and later changes have been made to how SSL (user certs) are used. Oreo also has the other issue when on WiFi and connect to VPN, WiFi apps won't work. This is not the fault of packet capture, but down to "desirable results" of regressions in Oreo code. In 7 and below this app is flawless in operation.

Works well. I didnt have problems decrypting SSL traffic as others recently mentioned. I checked the exp date on the Packet Capture CA cert and it said 2029 exp date. I'd give it 5 stars except for the fact that it didn't uninstall the CA certificate (or tell me to do it) once i uninstalled the app. That is a security concern IMO.

Works as advertised, and without fuss. Only app I've seen so far whose developer was smart enough to leverage VPN so that root access isn't a prerequisite. Great tool for getting the download link for HTC OTA updates without needing a PC (Just capture the traffic from the system app named Updater)

Well when it worked, and when it was Ip4 traffic, it was a great tool to test different scenarios and see what the result was. I was able to read, for the first time, the Google Play Services output, decrypted as it was, and learned the lengths They go to. Literally the output is like : Waking: 28% certainty Lying Down: 10% certainty On a Bike: 16% .certainty In a bed: 10% certainty. Etc... Well it once was a must have app for me, even though the cert seems to have been individualized.

App has become completely useless because the mtm SSL certificate has expired. If you start capturing, all that happens is all SSL traffic through the tunnel stops working when the clients rejects the expired proxy certificate. The right thing to do is to regenerate the certificate whenever it expires using the same key even necessary.

It's a nice app and was working fine from the start on my phone after I've installed the certificates. However I wish there would be a way to apply filters. For example, I only want to catch connections on one specific port.

Update: worked great on Android 10 where you're allowed to install certificates through the app but Android 11 has some issues. Seems like Android 11 doesn't trust user certificates anymore, and doesn't allow packet capture to decrypt.. I'm thinking it's more a OS issue then an app issues because the app is recognizing the user certificate installed. Android is becoming a horrible operating system... There's a dollar to be made off it's users expense, so they try to lock down everything. 😑

I like the app, but it can be improved by allowing saving all the captures from a session with a single tap, instead of packet by packet.

Ahm. B. Mar 11, 2022

It could be a good app, but whenever wants to generate the certificate, it says "cannot create certificate". I even went to the setting and manually gave it storage access, still no luck :(

Really an interesting app that works. But when I don't know what I'm doing, it's quite impossible to use. The results just shows a bunch of random characters and the app can't generate a certificate.

I get "cannot create certificate" whilst setting up on an Android 10 device. SSL streams aren't captured "no data" (presumably the certificate problem? Non-SSL streams are displayed with lots of non-printable characters. Installs the certificate ok on Android 8, but SSL streams still are flagged "no data".

This app helped me identify other apps that were making network requests to display super annoying full screen ads even when they weren't running. This let me get rid of them. Very handy.

works great for debugging http but cannot get the ssl certificate to work. as soon as its turned on the app i am tracing says there is no internet. can't find any help. programming Android internals is beyond me

Absolutely perfect, great work! You might wanna find an older phone with lollipop or marshmallow or just use an emulator if you need to capture encrypted traffic. I couldn't install the required certificate on android 11

Rus. M. May 24, 2021

Just a suggestion. Once the app captures the all the packets from selected app, add an option of "Search" so that we can search for what exactly we want to check/see. Rest all good.

i didnt notice that there was adds after saveing.... have u seen httpcanary? can you make this capture from specific apps only? i have not fully tested it yet... but the screens you show seem to imply that its non selective...

I gave it 2 stars because it does show when certain apps poll server for updates. Took off star for vpn it uses took 5 min to send plaintext "hi" text using phone messanger(app didn't capture text) Took off 2 stars for Not a single packet was captured with actual information, not even packet headers...

Easy to use. The feature of capturing a single app traffic is realy useful. Works well for http requests, but fails to decode https requests (says no data on every ssl request when the certificate is active)

Red. Oct 26, 2019

Not sure the purpose of the app as it doesn't do what it claims. I wanted to capture the packets from devices connected to mine not my own and even with capturing my own device packets its very limited. Not worth downloading.

Ste. M. Oct 10, 2021

It's a nice app, howevrler I cannot install the certificate, guessing an android 11 issue. Also for geo restricted apps this doesn't work as the VPN must be in some other country, should have the ability to select a country for the VPN.

Iwa. q. Mar 4, 2020

Can't view or export more than one conversation at a time. SSL certificate can't be installed either, I get a generic error. Completely useless. 🤬

Tas. G. Jan 7, 2019

Great app, I use it to debug various apps to see where the traffic goes to. Please add capability to change between packets with left/right swipe-gesture.

Swa. D. Jan 19, 2019

Doesn't work on Android 9. Packets are captured but they show no data, and connection times out on whatever app i try to debug it on.

Mat. W. Sep 28, 2020

On some emulators certificate import is blocked. I had to extract the certificate from the APK castore and "manually" import it using Root Certificate Manager. Please add the option to export all packets at once to pcap. Otherwise it is a huge ordeal to select each request stream > export > name and save > find next and repeat.
