Not great, not terrible. I watch the NewsHour almost every night. It's been a steadfastly reliable, balanced source of news for so long. However, the app itself is lacking. I still have the app installed and I use it regularly, but I don't use it to watch PBS NewsHour episodes or live video. The app also does ask for too many permissions, something I see in other reviews. Lastly, some videos embedded in articles are cropped incorrectly. That's just bad programming. Hoping for a good update.
I just got a notification for live video, and "no data" error page appears. Feed doesn't update; I'm only able to read nearly week-old stories. The video side seems to work, (but then so does the YouTube channel). I really want to like this app, but that's the entire reason it's on my phone. :/
PBS News App worked for years. Suddenly, today, I get blue screen saying the app is disabled. I did not disable it. Also, looking at this app in, "Settings," it does not show that it has been disabled Uninstalling an re-installing app has app asking, insisting, upon access to any and all facets of this device - everything on your - my - computer. That is neither necessary nor is it at all appropriate, sine all I want is the PBS News. No way. OK then, screw the PBS News App.
Liked it until I attempted to get full screen with a video segment. I touched the full screen icon (on my Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro)and the screen went black and, despite my many attempts,same thing each time. So... the app is OK unless you want to expand video play to full screen. Hence my rating at 3 stars. Bummer. Please fix.
The app was working great until yesterday. It says it has been marked inactive and now it won't function at all. It seems that the app may need updated to work with Android! I use this app daily, so hopefully this gets worked out, as I see I'm not alone in this issue.
Everytime I start the app I get two pop ups asking for additional permissions. I'm able to click cancel through both and still read the news, but can you please just give me a "don't ask again" option? I don't want your push notifications or extra nonsense, just give me the news.
For the best news show on broadcast TV to have the worst ever streaming app is disappointing, to say the least! It doesn't work well on Android TV (Mi Box), my Samsung phone, or on a Chromebook (Android apps). Uninstalled. Hopefully it will get better.
This App wants permission to access everything on your phone, pictures, camera, contacts, etc. I denied all permission except storage. Now every time I try to read an article a popup asks for permission to access offline items. What the hell PBS! Too invasive!
Organization is ★★★★★, but app became disabled (Android 10) Apparently not ready, yet. {history} Had last two permissions in list are switched off. Can un/reinstall, but value my privacy. Don't want to burden Tor for video. No VPN, yet. ||| Just un/reinstalled; all permissions enabled. Did get warning about possible device incompat'y. {/history} Device is G. Pixel XL, which otherwise runs Android 10 jist fine. I'll be patient, but leave this posted.
Love PBS Newshour. Hate, and I mean hate this app. Does not work with Android 9 and 10. Needs all sort of phone permissions that are truly unacceptable. It wants access to photos, videos, calls and contacts. Why? Uninstalled the app, but will keep watching Judy every night. Please fix this app.
Please work on notifications for breaking news and other headlines! The last time I got a notification for news from this app was November 7th. I am writing this review on December 10th.
Once a good source of neutral news, they've recently started flooding their stories with man-hating feminism. While I prefer left-leaning news, I can only stomach equality, not hate speech from either side of the political aisle. I'll come back when they fire all their biased feminist writers. I recommend AP News or Ground News instead.
Great app. But more importantly, great reporting and journalism. In a world where biased news is prominent, unbiased sources like PBS are essential. Keep up the unbiased reporting and the good work on this app!
App has stopped updating. I havent received any new news updates in iver a week and manually refreshing does nothing. I had to uninstall and reinstall to get the latest updates. Seriously!?
When the app opens, it displays a message that says the app is set to "disabled" and then is frozen. Useless!
I wish it worked better, I love PBS news. I am unable to see story or video titles and everything looks jumbled up and some things are overlaid on others. Please fix it so I can get my PBS news!
Works great for Windows PC and Android Phones. You can go to YOUTUBE and get the show but the application is much better.
Excellent news platform. Honest, unbiased, in depth reporting on all issues important to all Americans and the world.
No need to know who I am calling and use of my camera, or really anything else. WAY too many privacy concerns. Uninstalled before updating. Will NOT download until permissions are changed!
This app is intrusive, it requires all permissions, why should Newshour need to access my camera and microphone. This is not the behavior we expect from PBS. Shameful!
"App disabled" message received when app opened. Uninstall and reinstall resulted in no change. I'm going to uninstall and just use website.
I enthusiastically stand behind the Newshour, but PLEEEEEEZE make the necessary changes so that it is still compatible after the OS Upgrade to Android 9.0
App wouldn't update. Now I get a blue screen which informs me that it has been disabled by the developer. Just uninstalled it.
Worked fine until a few days ago, then it started showing a blue DISABLED screen on my T-Mobile Galaxy S5 running Android version 6.0.1. I want my PBS Newshour app back!
Inactive?? When the app opens, it says it has been set to inactive which is really unfortunate. I LOVE PBS NewsHour but this is NOT it.
Downloaded to android but app said ot is set to inactive. Could not make app work. Uninstalled app, there are other news apps. Adios.
I really enjoy the Newshour as an more neutral news source. However their app leave alot to be desired. Many tabs do not or are outdated by several days. Very few of the actual articles are readable in the app. Instead theirs a short description and/or clip, with the rest being linked to their website. I would like the developer to port the full articles into the app, and let the tabs reflect current news (at least within the week, not months). Thanks and keep up the great reporting.
