A low effort port. There's no touchscreen integration, it's somewhat poorly emulated with plenty of graphical glitches. Also, you have to be online if you want to save the game at any time. I paid £1.99 to remove ads on Phantasy Star IV. But I'll be playing the game using a decent emulator instead of this app. Don't waste your time with this buggy/frustrating app. There are many better ways to play these great games.
Doesn't have the 1st Phantasy Star! The 1st will always be the best to me. It's a shame it's not included. That said, I'm glad 2 & 3 are....and I've never played 4. Thanks dev! ADS ARE INSUFFERABLE! Phone call, text, music, pause, anything you do results in a ad. It's beyond obnoxious. I'd pay for the game but reviews say the ad experience doesn't change. And I don't want to use google play games feature.
I love these games. But the ads slowly became very intrusive. Not sure if it was an error but I was getting the 5 second resume ads every 10 seconds of inactivity, as well as at the start of and in the middle of battles, entry into town, and sleeping for the night. It's a real shame as I was having so much fun playing Phantasy Star 4.
Man I've been looking for this for almost 15 years now! Played part IV the first time back in 2005 and grinded my characters for countless hours. The unfolding of the storyline is what got me hooked up. Battle mechanics is great. I just wish there is an option to speed up the battle animations especially when using macros. This one is classic and that which introduced me to the genre.
This review is for the app itself, not the Phantasy Star games (thise are great). There's no option to stay signed in to the game server, so I have to sign in everytime. That wouldn't be so bad, but for reasone i always have to try twice before I can sign in. There are also annoying full-screen ads at start-up that persist even after paying for a game. And occasionally, the game freezes when teying to save, causing you to lose your progress.
Very accurate port of the game, but save often. WARNING! In the options, if you choose the 'set age' option, even if by mistake, it will reset the game and refuses to let you save with no warning whatsoever. I lost a lot of progress because I accidentally tapped this button and it forced me to reset.
EDIT: Looks like local saves finally work! incredibly happy about this. The inclusion of PS 3 and 4 is nice, but not constantly losing progress is wonderful. (original) I paid for the premium upgrade, for the promised Local Saves. They do not work. I can only save on the cloud, which is extremely infuriating, as I wanted to play offline.
Some of these reviews are odd. Look I'm giving this 4 stars because first, I already have the Genesis cart etc. Yes there was one ad, and it wasn't 30 seconds, it was like 3 seconds tops people, click the double arrow on the top-left. Simple. Use the in-game save and don't bother clicking the button, or guess what? Ads. Now I'm taking a star for screen tearing. Even my Genesis didn't do that, the Switch emulated port doesn't do that, hell KEGA doesn't suffer from that. It's real gross.
Great emulator, true to the original games. Few, if any, glitches while playing. I loved the games originally, and the developers made a wonderful opportunity for us to get access to it again. A few ads every now and again (saving/loading), but it doesn't spam you with them non-stop like a lot of games.
Big thanks to Sega for making their classics available for free! I did have issues with the D-pad, which has very small buttons and often sent me in the wrong direction. As for thr gameplay, PS4 is a cut above the others and generally has great pixel art, but there are a lot of mechanical issues characteristic of early RPGs. I logged a lot of hours in the game but ultimately chose not to finish because of the wildly unbalanced combat, painful menu navigation, undeveloped story and other issues.
If I try to save when I have poor connection, the app freezes while trying to log in to the game server, and must be force-closed, causing lost progress. Can't save in-game or offline. I paid 5 dollars for an interface inferior to basic free emulators, which bugs me to review every time I save. That's annoying. Great games, 5/5. Terrible app, 1/5.
After purchasing #4 to get ad free, it still requires me to watch an ad to save the game, even after restoring purchases and all of that. I think these games should be made available separately to purchase, ad free and without having to "restore" your purchase every time you open the app. They're great games, just a bad way of making an app for them.
Great games if you like traditional turn based rpgs. The port suffers from control issues but not as badly as the Shining Force package did so there has been improvements. I paid for the ad free version because the price for 3 games was not unreasonable. However it does seem to require multiple button presses to login into a google play account, which has tripped me up savewise when I wasn't paying attention. Good games and a good job overall, just a few minor tweaks to controls needed.
Tired of having played for an hour or so, then I thought I'd better save my progress, and the app gets stuck at "continue" trying to load an advert in , in order to use the save feature. You should make sure the game doesn't get stuck like this when something like an advert loading doesn't work. Had to close the whole window and lose my progress.
I love the Phantasy Star series, especially 4, and I love that Sega is publishing them in a way that will allow me to easily share them with my kids. i don't mind the ads at all, a small price to pay for a free game with added functionality. keep it up sega! Could use more customization with the controls though, and a stretch to fullscreen option, that would make it 5 stars from me
Unplayable, that is the best description of this port, first you need to watch a ad every time you want to save, ok but 75% of the time the game crashes when trying to play the ad and you lost all your progress, well then the other 25% of the time it looks like it saved it, that's untill you try to load the file later and realize it only saved the first time and it didn't override the save the next 3 times you saved and you lost an hour of progress, so you have 3 save slots and only 1 time use per slot so you can only save 3 times in the whole game, better get an emulator and the rom, is way better option and 1000% more reliable than this joke of a port.
I'm editing my review since reading a few others. I still don't like watching an ad to save state, but knowing now the in game save works as the original release it's not as big a deal. the controls are still wonky at best, but being a turn based rpg it doesn't affect the gameplay much. My original review was one star because of issues stated above and I didn't like the player itself. I blamed the player for losing nearly 2 hours of playtime. I now believe that time was lost by my own mistake.
Save offline by going to the house in the first city that downloads memories and experiences, then when you get a votaphone( I think that's what it's called) you can safe any time after level 10 of one of the characters. When the game starts, it has Checking back? data and asks new game or continue, pick continue, and the file will show up that you named in the memory house. Thanks to person who found this saving tip. I don't know about the other two chapters, if they also can be saved in-game.
Great port of the game. Removing the Ads is a great price! Love that you can totally customize the onscreen controls. My only suggestions is allow the start button to move so that it does not obstruct the screen and there is no local save, only cloud save and if it is enabled, without data.... the game won't open.
seriously.. fix the game crashes.. there should be no reason why 16 bit shouldnt play on a Stylo 3, and i would never pay for this app if i cant atleast save locally. other than that, the app plays just like the original game, thats why i gave the controls, graphics, and gameplay 5 stars, and this app 1. honestly, if you made it be able to save locally as well as removing the ads is well worth the $2, id be willing to even pay $5 if you made it save locally.
Games work great, but the fact that you have to log in every time just to be able to play and save is really stupid. If you're without cell service you can't play the game. The rewind function is really nice, though, so instead of 2 stars, this one gets 3.
Don't let other comments deter you from trying this port. Everyone complaining about ads must be using save state or something because I have been playing Phantasy Star 4 for about 10 hours and the only ad I ever see is the one at start up, and you can typically skip it after 5 seconds. With that said, the gameplay is exactly the same as the original. What a great rpg from the past. So glad I found it on here. 5/5 recommend you download and play if you like the PS series. RIP Alys
