PIEL Survey
This app is ideal for "in the moment" data gathering, also known as Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) or Experience Sampling Management (ESM). This allows a more complete understanding of a participant's thoughts and feelings than traditional survey methods.
Key features:
- Currently there are 4 question types; list, checkbox, slider and free text.
- List questions can also be made to branch to different questions depending on the response.
- Schedules can be fixed, random or semi-random.
- The surveys will run even when an internet connection is not present.
- Users can swipe between questions.
- Design feature to ensure accessibility.
Manual surveys can also be run based on certain events occurring or to directly interview participants.

Finished my thesis using this research app, worked well after the initial learning curve.
I love the clean user interface of this survey app for my research participants. I got an excellent response rate. They also answer support questions quickly. The survey setup is very flexible but you have to use a text editor. Mych easier than I expected. I now have my PhD students using it.
This app is extremely useful for ESM or EMA survey based research. It took about an hour to learn how to set up a survey, them it was easy. Our research participants found it intuitive and easy to use. It is great that ot works offlone We plan to use the app again
This is my “go to” app for my experience sampling survey research. Using a text file you can create very customisable surveys but with a nice simple interface for research participants. New features seem to be added on a regular basis.
This is a review from the researcher (rather than participant) perspective. The Piel Survey website links are all currently broken and only show the landing page. No way to see contact information. No way to see instructions. So no way to learn more or get help. The app itself doesn't have anything but a very simple survey. No contact information, no help screen, nothing. Not looking good.
Clean interface, easy to use, and the developers are very helpful. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great ESM/EMA survey app.

This app made it easy to do the survey for the research project.
Easy to use
As a participant, this survey app does NOT silence itself when the user sets their phone to silent / no notifications for the night. I have all volumes set to zero, and yet the surgery overrides them. I will drop out off the survey of the app does not even allow you to control when to silence it.
