Pingcoin is the digital version of the classical "ping test" for catching counterfeit coins. By recording and analyzing the sound produced by your coins the app is able to tell you if the coin is genuine or fake.
If you've ever found yourself not quite 100% sure about a coin's authenticity, try the ping test with the Ping Coin app. It will prevent you from getting fooled by counterfeit coins and it you will have peace of mind purchasing from even the shadiest coin sellers at fairs and garage sales.
How it works
A coin, like a musical instrument, produces a characteristic sound. Like a musical instrument this sound depends on its shape and on the material it's made out of. A wooden flute sounds different compared to a copper one. Similarly two coins of the same size and weight will sound differently based on the material they're made of.
The app will compare the characteristic sound of your coin (usually comprised of three frequencies) to my reference values. For each coin and for each frequency a tolerance threshold is displayed. If your coin's frequencies fall within the thresholds, it will almost certainly be genuine!
How to ping your coin
Pinch the coin at its center keeping the surface area of your fingers to a minimum. (Imagine that the coin vibrates at the sides but stays fixed at its center.) Then flick the coin with a finger from your other hand. This can be done very softly. Don't worry if the sound is shorted and muffled, your smartphone mic will pick it up anyway.

Submit new coins
Use the "Submit a coin" feature inside the app to submit a recording for a new coin to be added. Once the ping has been analyzed, the coin will appear in the list.

Very good for testing silver and gold coins, just select the specific coin on this app. then holding it lightly on finger tips, use a hard plastic pen then lightly tap the coin and you'll see 3 different frequencies that tells you if it's pure silver or gold! Works great but needs more coin selections like silver rounds and bars!
I tried this app on Morgan's, Peace, Kennedy's, Franklin's, walking (halfs and dollars) I was surprised how easy and quick it identified coins. I mixed in some clads and others to try to mix things up and it quickly was able to recognize the differences. I installed it on a Samsung tablet and S8, both performed well. This app adds another tool to check coins to make sure they are real.
While flicking the coin it clearly lights up the 3 sections as green but won't register. Then once out of a dozen tries it will catch the first frequency but not the rest. The sensitivity must be too low, while the selectivity is fine.
Not often do I find an app with no bloat and great functionality. Works great! Coins test true and similar coins fail appropriately. Noisy background was no problem at all, only improvement that could be made is a larger database!
At first it Kept closing . as soon as a coin is selected it opens to the test then crashing... After restarting it currently works. This my be more due to andriod systems and permissions then the app. Only tested 2 coins: a real liberty oz silver & an unknown buffalo silver round (which it claims is real, altho it is quite a different pitch and less longevity of hum then the liberty)...
I came back and tried again, I think it can be a great tool but it needs some adjustments, a person can mabe even use a plug in microphone and some sort of a stand to perform the test, i'll come back latter and see if you guys iron out the wrinkles
Love the app. Did notice that the 2021 silver panda won't get more than 2 out of 3 frequencies. The other years I have do fine; even though some are truly 1 oz, while others are 30 g. (I don't have a 2019 or 2020 to test with, though.) Is it because of the new design, you suppose?
Very, very cool! In addition to the practical value of having another way of verifying coins, I really appreciate how crisp and simple the UI is in this app. Keep up the good work!
Only problem I have is I can put it on any three US half dollars. Say I pick walking liberty half and I can ping those, Franklin's and Kennedys will all pass the same.
The best free tester with quite a few different coin types. Watch the How To video for proper technique. Pinch in center and lightly tap/ping with fingernail.
Good app but cannot get more than 2 frequency matches, tried 8 silver eagles and 12 washington quarters. I have an older phone (samsung s7) could the microphone be messed up?
I absolutely love this app. Very easy to use and a large variety of Gold and Silver coins in the database. Fantastic job by the developer!
Very simple and easy to use. This is what makes buying coins safer than buying bullion. Just need more coins in the database
Works as described. I'll balance the coin on the end of my finger with my hand flat and use my steel wedding band to tap it. Works perfect!
Works very well and accurate on Samsung A20. Though some coins should rolled into one to use the same ping test (Morgan & Peace dollars and Franklin, Liberty & 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars)
This is such a useful app, highly recommended, great for testing coins before buying! Hope they keep developing this!

Don't work. It only gives me about 1/3 second to do the ping test. not enough time.
Showed counterfeit Morgan as good. The Morgan failed the silver-slide test and was confirmed by my coin store to be bogus. But it passed the tap test on this app.

It's good but not 100% accurate. It passes a 1 Oz silver Krugerrand as a 1 Oz Gold Maple
you need to put yourself more visably on social media and include .900 purity coins. overall your app is very nice.
Very accurate, can tell the difference between a .999 silver coin and a .9999 coin.

worked well for me my 93 Madison half also pinged for the walking liberty half maybe they have close enough frequencies for you to include it in with the walking liberty half
My original review is below, but since then the app is now working perfect for me, so bumped it up from 3 to 5 stars. Works great! I didn't see a trouble shooting section in the app, because my phone speaker(?) Only shows audio within the first of three resonance sections. I also tried a audio jack microphone, but the app still wanted to use the built in phone speaker instead. Nice app layout though.
