PlaneEnglish

PlaneEnglish is an interactive aviation radio simulator created to enable pilots to learn and master aviation radio communication and gain the confidence to overcome the fear and trepidation of talking to Air Traffic Control.

Instantaneous feedback through voice recognition and speech analysis guides new pilots through realistic scenarios toward proficiency in aviation phraseology and communication.

Users can access more than 80 airports and step through over 130 lessons of interactions with air traffic control that range from simple to challenging on every phase of flight from taxi out, to takeoff, to airspace entrance, to approaches, to taxi in.

Guided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) phraseology, standards, and radiotelephony procedures, new pilots can gain critical safety skills in an accessible and effective way and build critical muscle memory thereby expanding the learning opportunities...beyond the classroom and outside of the cockpit.

App worked during the trial period. I purchased one year VFR subscription. My account showed two licenses - expired trial and new one. The mic feature stopped working. I contacted ARSim and explained the issues. They said since I purchased through Google, they couldn't do much on their end. Tried removing the license, then re-entering the license key; that didn't work at all. Still hoping someone can fix the issue. App was great when it worked. Now I'm out $60 with no access.

No matter how clear I speak it only picks up about half of my words, which makes for a miserable UX. I'm only on the very first lessons where readbacks are one or two words (e.g. "right base"), so it's only going to get worse from here when longer sentences won't be recognised. A real shame given the lessons look excellent! I've tried the suggestion of setting the phone's language to English (US) and that didn't seem to make a difference. I've switched to the website version instead - better!

This app is proving to be very helpful with my studies and my career. The voice recognition doesn't catch your words sometimes but that, doesn't bother me since it's doing its job in the end. I would also like to note that I had to contact tech support because I entered my license key In the wrong area and they were very swift and helpful in getting fixed. That means a lot these days when purchasing apps and softwares. Overall, this app is awesome and I will be using it for awhille!

Good training tool, but it misses understanding a lot of words no matter how clearly I pronounce them. It lets you manually correct the words it thinks you missed, but it's annoying to do almost every time. Nice practice, anyway. Would be 5 stars with higher accuracy, good for developing some muscle memory for radio calls without sounding like a total dork on your local CTAF or towered airport.

The mechanics of the app are great and worth it, does not pick up accurately everytime but whatever. Can't give it five stars because of that and because the app does not load in properly everytime. I have to force restart everytime. April 2022.

During the trial I had the app wouldn't pick up anything from my microphone (I have a brand new phone and the microphone works fine). I double checked app permissions and it still wouldn't work. It's supposed to give feedback on each lesson. I don't want to invest in a subscription if it's not even going to work.

Thanks ..will start my lessons soon ...and it really helps to prepare myself ...but, my school always says that we have to say the frequencies saying "decimal" and not point. And second, for some reason it can't detect X-RAY in the phonetic alphabet. Thank you

I'm having the same problem as others with the microphone. I have Google text to speech selected to record my voice but it doesn't work when trying to complete a lesson. It does however work when I'm practicing. Please help.

Not really usable. Mic doesn't get picked up. Clunky interface.

Great when it works. Speech recognition is okay, there are a few words that it never recognizes no matter how well I enunciate. Takes a stupid amount of time to load when you first open the app.

Cool idea, but it doesn't understand the word "cleared" - and no, it's not me mispronouncing it. Voice to Text issue? Edit: upped to 5 stars because they replied indicating they saw the feedback (which is all I wanted) and they're working on the issue. It's a very nice app and I find it extremely useful and overall very well built, so even with bugs it's on the high end of 4 stars so let's round it up to 5.

This app is great for beginning practice. Very helpful. I do wish the programmers would improve the voice recognition on it. It tells you that you are wrong with simple words like Ramp, VFR, IFR, and the like. Google has it down with voice recognition and this program is more like the 2nd grade. It also allows for no alternative patter. In the real world there are many different ways to communicate with the tower, center or ground.

Was very helpful, but they don't tell you up front that it's only a short free trial, followed by a very expensive subscription. I would've paid a one-time fee if it was advertised that way. In response to your reply: my qualm is not with the fact that you're charging, but that you aren't straightforward about it. Update: Thank you to the developers for allowing all users a month free during the quarantine. Though I would still prefer a one-time fee so i could keep using the app afterwards.

The speech recognition is not reliable. Some words it doesn't recognize at all even if you try to say it multiple times with different intonation. In the meantime it may insert words I didn't say. Also the app may reset the progress I made suddenly. The loading of the app is too long. And there were several other minor bugs. This app obviously needs a lot of improvements and right now it doesn't worth the money the owners ask for the license.

This could be an excellent app if it's not for the really terrible voice recognition system. It doesn't learn to understand my spelling like most voice recognition system does, and it doesn't matter how many times I corrected it, it just never learned. And yes, like one of other guys said, it reset ALL my progress several times for no reason. I gave it 2 stars because at least it does provide excellent tools to learning what to say on the radio. Please.. fix the idiotic voice recognition..

For a newbie, this is incredible! I don't recommend the basic first. It's only wants you to say numbers and letters mostly. This thing really shines when you start with the taxi section. There's actual responses that you'll get (automated of course) but it gets your communication skills to a new level even if you're starting with no skills.

Eth. B. Oct 24, 2020

This app crashes on me after I provide a response, but it doesn't happen all the time. Just enough for it to be really annoying. It also has trouble recognising my voice. I'll be trying a mic to see if that fixes it. But I am constantly manually correcting it. Otherwise, it is a good app that can help you learn. It also appears to try to make it so you are quick on the ptt, which is important since you don't want to hold it hostage in real life.

Let me just say first off that the scenarios for practice are quite useful, particularly the section "the basics". But the voice recognition is incredibly bad it gets frustrating really quickly. Also, if you click on a lesson and then back out immediately it still counts and is marked as a zero. Poor app design which is such a shame :(

Unless I'm missing something, this app gives you a 14-day free trial. After that you need to subscribe for a monthly or annual fee. I've been a pilot for more than 50 years, so I know the ATC system pretty well. This app seems ok, but I checked its pronunciation of numbers; it doesn't pronounce TREE or NINER correctly. I haven't really explored too much else.

Cha. H. Feb 20, 2022

Virtually no documentation. Like many others have said, the voice recognition is spotty at best. It is subscription based and quite expensive ($5-$10 per month) for what you get.

Janky AF. After sign up only opens once in awhile. Restarted my phone and tried to open it again, went to a blank screen with a scroll window that didnt stop or move on for at least 5 minutes. I figured maybe a live update. Closed app.. Tried once more later on that day, it opened! Tried a basic lesson and you would think I was talking German or something cause it picked up maybe 1 in 10 words. I really like the idea but it didn't work for me.

Tob. W. Aug 20, 2020

The idea is good and it's useful to learn atc comms which is difficult to do live otherwise. Edit: Devs are really friendly and responsive, great communication. They have communicated they've fixed the voice recognition problems I had before however with the current price and the fact that it is a subscription at this price makes it out of my reach at the moment.

Awesome app as a student pilot training for PPL! I've made more progress in radio comms by using this app for 1 hour versus 15hrs of flying (and hours of liveATC). In my last lesson, my instructor commented on my improvement in comms. App has minor things it could improve (eg some words dont pick up well), but the good far outweighs the bad, & responsive team behind the app. If it were up to me, this should be packaged for every student to help get them up to speed on standard radio phrases.

Phi. B. Jun 27, 2020

Many voice recognition issues! I was excited for such an app but with such a garbage recognition process it becomes quite frustrating. Even slowing down to make CLEAR words will only result in mic time-out. Any faster and it'll dox words. I'm not crazy, I don't think so, so I do "ok google" and then with the same quick response of the sentence this app can't understand, google types it out perfectly. Very disappointed and NOT WORTH the fee until fixed

The iPad version is much better. The microphone stopping if there's a break in the cadence is extremely annoying and counter productive. Maybe there's a way to turn it off, I didn't see one. Doesn't happen on iOS. This version seems to have issues picking up certain words. It will not pick up that I am saying "VFR to the North" even when I make sure to enunciate and/or speak loudly. I'll just stick to the iOS version for now. People complain about the paywall but the creators gotta eat too...

I don't know what's going on with all these bad reviews. Sometimes the google speech tool will miss some words but other than that I find it to be a great training experience. I'm using an old galaxy s7 edge too and haven't had any of the problems I keep reading about in all these reviews. Its helped me with my radio work alot. Just signed up for a subscription. Thank you!
