* THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF POLKA MUSIC ********************

Polka is widely known as a dance in Central Europe as well as a classification of dance music familiar with citizens within the Americas and Europe. Polka developed in Eastern Bohemia in the mid-19th century. Oxford Etymological Dictionary defines Polka as a derivative of the same Czech word “polka” which means "Polish woman." Various theories exists about Polka’s history; some say the Polka dance and music was first associated with Anna Slezakova (born Anna Chadimova), a young woman who lived in Labska Tynice, Bohemia and danced to go alng with a regional folk song called "Strýcek Nimra koupil šimla" (translated to "Uncle Nimra Bought a White Horse").

Several popular polka composers and artists include Jimmy Sturr, Kyle Redman Polka Band, Joey Miskulin, Walter Ostanek (Canada), Frankie Yankovic, Happy Louie and Julie, Tom Brusky, Verne Meisner, Marv Herzog, Lenny Gomulka, Mike Schneider, The Our Gang Orchestra, Walt Groller, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Primus, and Leftover Salmon. The 1965 film “The Great Race” was graced by Henry Mancini’s composition “Pie in the Face Polka.” At present, Polka remains popular as a form of folk music in various European countries and artists from countries like Croatia, Latvia, Netherlands, Lithuania, Belarus, Slovakia, Germany, Slovenia, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Italy, Ukraine, Russia, and Switzerland.
