I've been using ProtonMail since 5/12/21. I like the option to tag emails but if you have multiple emails, one has to be patient setting it up. Sometimes it's annoying to use. Refreshing needs to be done manually just to delete read emails. The same goes with trash deletion. Sometimes I get lagging emails notifications when I use my credit card to make purchases. I thought of going back to the free version but I'm willing to give ProtonMail more time to see what improvements come out.
Lacks standard features of email in the 2020s. Without the ability to resize image attachments within the app, as is standard in literally every other email client, it's basically useless for attaching images, which is something I would do in 90 percent of emails sent. This has been implemented for 15 years in other clients. This lack of a basic most obvious feature prevents me from seriously using protonmail.
Love proton overall and all their services, but the app needs some extra work still. For example, can we customise the drop down notifications options? The function Archive is useless to me, but "mark as read" would be very handy. Secondly, there's some miss communication between the app and the webmail. If I read things on the Web from the computer, the app won't make the notification disappear unlike other email apps.
I absolutely love the concept of Protonmail security and privacy, but the app doesn't work for me. For some reason it sometimes "loses" internet connection and I have to restart the app (kill it in the android overview of running apps and open it again) for it to start working. Without restarting it, updating in the app by swiping down just doesn't work: it infinitely runs without stopping. This bug makes the app nearly impossible to use.
The concept is great but the app is quite terrible to read emails since it fails to recognise text and adapt it to the screen. You're left with zooming in with your fingers but it then moves the right border out of the screen and you have to scroll to the side. I end up forwarding long emails to another account to be able to read better
I love the concept of my email being private. But idea is one thing and implementation is another. This app has most of the features an email app should have, but each feature leaves an undercooked feel in your mouth. It has a very amateurish / high-school projectish feeling about it. I'm a paying customer and intend to stick to the platform, in the hopes of them getting their sh¦t together.
I tried the beta. Great redesign, but sometimes, when a new email is received, the app notification gets stuck in "retrieving notifications" and if you open the app it is stuck on "refreshing". Tried clearing the cache, reinstalling, still the same. I had to revert to the old layout. You could look into it.
I love the product but the syncing functionality of the Android app is lacking. Push notifications and the app state do not stay in sync with the web client: the notifications tell me I have unread messages that I've read on web and the app does not update state in the background (I usually have to wait a while for my inbox to sync when opening the app).
100% of the time your mail doesn't send and it won't tell you it didn't until hours later. No joke. Getting spam from the same shady domain doesn't blacklist the domain automatically. Search is awful. Not in a good state. I've been using it for a good year or something and so far I'm not impressed. I couldn't tell you about one app update I personally cared about and which made the app better to use. It's a shame.
The new plans with Mail plus and Unlimited is really appreciative. However, now it's high time that you guys pay attention to also improve the mobile app. Web version is great but mobile app a big 👎. No dark mode, contacts don't show up in Phone address book, the UI feels 90s, accounts don't sync with other Proton apps- I've to login manually to VPN and calendar apps. Please look into these
Excellent. It's a relief to know there's a great email option that is hands off your data and secure. Also an excellent app to use. Intuitive, bug free, and packed with functions. This is hands down the best email system available.
Noo don't redesign it! Why would you do that? Simplicity is best. Remember the old Gmail app? White and basic. Easy. Awesome. Then they made it red and ugly like some kids app. It took years for it to get dialed down. Look at the monstrosity the Firefox app has turned into compared to the original. Changing good things for no reason never ends well. We love the app and tech behind it, not into sensory overload. Devs always making this mistake. I was just saying those icons are unlabeled. 🙏🏻
Extremely slow and buggy. Will often refuse to load images. I usually have to restart several times before I can actually view my emails. Tried what the Dev replied. Literally no difference. I hate that I've used this email for so many things. Now I'm stuck with a usess email app.
You all have updated the web UI with significant changes twice now, but its going on four years with this rather mediocre mobile app. Are we ever going to get notifcation parity between the web and mobile app? Why does multiselect still reset after one action (I want to mark as read AND delete multiple emails). Basic user experience stuff here, guys, and your service is not cheap.
Great mail, subpar app. mobile client in browser is so much more feature rich, this application doesn't even allow you to change custom folder names, after you create them, which is a shame. I will recommend PM anyway, as opposed to gmail, which is atrocious and sells your information wherever you go. Update: beta includes dark theme - fantastic. There are still features missing, like mark and delete multiple mails after searching. Responsive team, so a big plus here, keep up the good work.
Great service for paid subscriptions. I really love the whole proton service suite and use it daily as my main email/drive/vpn/calendar. Security is top notch but as a security engineer I would have liked to see a bit more transparency about how Proton secure their systems and infrastructure (look at Gitlab's transparency standard). Design is a bit dated, but it works great and simplifies email security so much, so I don't mind. Dark mode for the app wold be nice. And a Proton Drive app?
ProtonMail Bridge makes the service work very well with Mozilla Thunderbird, but the Android version is lacking: - e-mails may stay in outbox for a long time, even forever, never to be sent. An old problem noticed by others too. - general sluggishness with notifications and e-mail download
Deleted my original review of one star. I didn't realize that you have to set up your account on the website first to be able to get into the app. So far it looks like a great email option and I love the free version and if you complete the 4 steps to setup your account you get a full 1Gb of storage for free which is double the amount if you don't. Make sure you do the 4 options to set up your account within 30 days to get the extra storage. Also check out the other products they have for free
Was really hoping they would have a "delete all" button in their mobile app but it's 2022 and they apparently didn't get the memo that people like to bulk delete their old emails. We need a way to bulk delete. I'm surprised this isn't a standard feature. Due to this, I'm stuck using Hotmail until Protonmail adds one, because it's too time consuming to individuallly delete emails one by one.
Secure, up to date technology, encrypted for Privacy. Use for the most important issues, tasks, conversations etc.. without having to go through too much mail to find the topic/mail you need to deal with. It's a number one/primary go to for your most needed, use other email addresses for secondary..and so on.
Love the email service for privacy. However, for the past month or so, I have been having connection issues. I cleared my cache, deleted and redownloaded, but the app still has an issue with connecting to the server when I have full data and full wifi.
I appreciate the privacy and security and have been a paid costumer for years. It works and I'd recommend it to anyone. Wishlist right now would be for Android app improvements such as: better syncing with desktop, notifications sync, conversation grouping view.
The app won't connect and always tells me to retry to connect to the internet. Now it won't load even when I fully close the app. I also do not like the interface of the app...It's dull. I'll probably uninstall an get a new email provider.
It seems to be a great app, wish it offered a dark mode, or the themes it offers on the desktop version.. Also wish I could set up rules for emails to go to certain folders automatically and then have an unread mail tab that would allow me to view all unread emails from all folders at once.
I love the service, but the android app is lacking. For example when an email is read on a PC in a web browser, the android notification still lingers on and won't go away unless manually removed. Another thing is there are no threads. Many little annoyances like that, it feels like an amateur application. And yes, I cleared the cache and reinstalled, it didn't help.
Almost perfect. Switched from Gmail to ProtonMail for privacy reasons. Some suggestions for improvements: * Threaded conversations!! There's been a preview on Twitter several years ago already - how is that still not in the actual app? I tried the beta version too and that one doesn't have them either. * Emptying the trash doesn't update well. Have to refresh a few times before messages are gone. * It's very easy to accidentally delete a draft. Just save by default, I'll delete it if I want to.
Good app, it does what it says it does. I feel like the GUI is a bit outdated though, and sometimes slightly unresponsive (sometimes need to relaunch the app and refresh the feed for new emails to appear). A dark mode, like on the web app, would be appreciated.
