Despite seeing others who had given the app a poor review, I remained an optimist and tried it. The download was smooth, the initialization screen about data collection was agreed to, and then...the blue ARRL splash screen was as far as it would go; no menus, no options, no buttons. Nothing. My phone can handle any app on the market, so I know the phone and/or software version aren't the problem. Very disappointed, as I was looking forward to having the digi-mag version as a travel option. 🧐
Overall the app is good (not bad or great). For each new available download (monthly), I've get "Login Failed". I have not expired, changed my username or subscriber ID and yet it thinks it is wrong. Currently it thinks I have no subscription and yet it expires in 2022! Once I get passed that problem, the app is better. I use a Galaxy S10e with maximum internal memory. Currently the amount of memory the app uses is not a problem but storage on a uSD would be nice. I have not yet found a way to remove an issue I have downloaded.
This is the fattest magazine I subscribe to...others take up far less space. And yet, THIS app is the only one that CANNOT be moved to the SDcard in my tablet. Just 2 issues would come close to filling my internal memory. All other issues (slow, crashes, etc) are just further failures of this app.
On the Galaxy Tab S3, the app has improved since its introduction and is completely stable. It doesn't need Zinio or other reader; please don't change. One improvement is needed: the table of contents page numbers nèed to be live. The ability to jump directly to a specific page would welcome.
The app is okay, however I have to delete the app then reload it each time a new magazine or new month comes in. There is no automatic update each month. Update --- are there any plans in the works to fix the arrl magazine app.? Thete is no improvement. I can not download any magazines. ...ki4acc 22 November 21. No change to magazine app. Still does not work. At this point will not download at all. !! 27 January 2022.
When it works it's fine but currently I can't read the latest issue. This is after clearing cache and app data, reinstalling (again) without any luck. Perhaps it needs some new bug fixes...Sigh, another few months and having to uninstall and reinstall just to get the current month. Might as well go back to paper magazine
Every time I try to open this app it stops working. Access to these magazines is included in my ARRL membership. It worked before the last update but no longer. Also when I try to continue, GOOGLE PLAY also stops working. If I'm going to be denied the perks of membership, I see no need to renew my membership. I'm using these on Android phone and tablet with the same results.
Slowly ground to a halt! Worked OK (but slow on my 24Gb/sec ISP) up until Sept. 2020. Then needed to reload each time for new QSTs (other magazines were OK) until December issue... Now the app will not even load. Samsung S2 tablet. My paper QST is late again. Happens at least once per year. Usually it shows up shortly after the next month's issue is delivered. So now the on line version joins the failure? How about a PDF VERSION? Something more reliable. Should I just surrender and drop ARRL?
Loading and turning pages are very slow, far away from smooth. The app does not remember the last page read, it is difficult to continue reading in trivial time. Saying that enjoying QST is more like struggling. The two stars is for the android app idea and high quality images... However, it doesn't look like what ARRL does... How about make QST available in Amazon Kindle or Google Play Books for ARRL members? Why not recruit real Android software developers to make the QST a proud ARRL app?
It's OK .... not crazy about the "clear all data" work-around for updating with new magazine issues, but at least it works. It's nice to have fingertip access to several magazines at any time.
horrible. even if you download and save an issue it is extremly slooooow. would be nice if you could store downloaded issues to sd card instead of using up internal memory. maybe i will try it again later but uninstalling for now. you are better off opening the issue and print to pdf, then you can copy the pdf to your phone or tablet and read it with any pdf reader.
Stopped working last July. I hit refresh, it refreshes but still the latest magazine is July and older. Just been using chrome and getting directly from ARRL. And yes I am current with my dues. Of course I get the mag in the mail, but prefer to read it on my tablet plus you can see videos from the digital edition.
Very poor App. You have to uninstall the App each month and then re-download and reinstall it just to get the new issue. I emailed ARRL about this over a year ago and they knew about this but nothing has changed. ARRL - WILL YOU PLEASE GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!!!!
This app has been working OK for me after resetting the cache. However, I prefer using my computer to read books & mags, rather than the smaller screen on a cell phone. Hopefully this app is available for windows or linux.
Payed digital mag subscription Currently unable to read and/or download a lot of magazines. That includes all magazines If trying to read online it just shows a blank page and a "wait" sign. Trying to download, allways a popup "Edition failed to download". Sometimes, even a previously downloaded edition, fail to show. If no internet connection unable to read previously downloaded editions. As I write this review unable to download and/or read most of the non 2021 magazines and some 2021 to.
Loaded once before I was a paid member. Signed up and paid dues, but then app does not load. It either shows splash screen or loading bar. Uninstalled and tried again. No go. Sorry ARRL this one hasn't been fully tested yet and not ready for prime time. Device is Google Pixel 4A
Frustrating, disappointing Let down. I am an ARRL member And I've been a ham for many many years. For what the ARL gets for QST magazine and for the abundance of adds That generate additional revenue you think they could hire, outsource or develop a better application. Pretty bad when the web version Is a more pleasant experience than the app. I should have listened to the reviews but I thought I would give it a shot anyway. The reviews were right this app is not ready for prime time.
Won't even fully load, just stuck at the loading bar. Ridiculous that this is the only way to get the digital version of the magazine and it doesn't even work.
For those not getting new issues of QST to appear: Go into Android app settings, find this app, and clear Storage and User items. It will force you to login again and re-download any previous content, but now appears to be working.
i am a current member and the ARRL has emailed me documents but the app says i don't exist. After over a year the app still doesn't want to work. Apparently, ARRL is not aware of any issues or they aren't interested in the app.
once in a while, it hangs, shows only the blue first screen. Then I have to uninstall the App and re-install. I lose all downloaded QSTs too.
The only thing worse than this app, is the customer service from the company. Their only suggestion is too delete the app and clear cache. It has to be deleted and reinstalled EVERY MONTH. This app is literal trash.
Bad reviews are because the app is apparently just not working for people. I've had no problems, and honestly I can't imagine a better magazine app. It's surprisingly good. So just try it out and see if it works for you...
It won't get past the login before it crashes, I'm very disappointed in the quality. If I wasn't an ARRL life member, I would question the value of my membership if they cant produce a better quality software product.
Not surprised ... Been away from HR for almost 20 years. I see not much has changed with ARRL. This has to be one of the worst apps ever. How many ways can a digital reader malfunction? Sheesh! NL7VL
hasn't worked since the last two updates. Even contact QRZ support and they could repair my account. Now to wait for my printed copy to show up. deleting this app. How about a -5 stars!
Negatives: 1. Must reinstall in order to receive new QST. 2. Randomly certain QST pages will not display. Positives: 1. Other mags arrive as expected 2. Other mags display all pages
Memory hog, I was well over 1gig with only 4 issues downloaded. However the main issue is it downloads the latest issue but you cannot open it. You would think that an organization that proclaims technology as one of its corner stones would figure out a way to manage a digital magazine, but apparently not. Feb. 2010. This the forth month that I have had to reinstall the app to be able to download the current issue. (I emailed ARRL and that was what they told to do. No mention of a fix).
