Raindar

Rain coming? Check Raindar! Animated Doppler radar on Google Maps for the US. Now also on Google TV and tablet!
Going somewhere and you're not sure if you need to bring your umbrella? Want to check if there's going to be fresh powder snow on the slopes in Tahoe tomorrow? Check Raindar! Raindar displays animated Doppler radar images on your Google Map. When you start Raindar it automatically focuses on your location so you can quickly see if there is precipitation coming your way. When pressing the search button on your phone you can now also search for locations within the US!

Raindar works out of the box but has many configuration options (see the recent changes page).

Color:
- green/yellow/red is rain
- blue/white is snow

Raindar can now also display storm tracks! It displays different icons for each of the 4 types of storms:

- Yellow circle: thunderstorm
- Yellow square: Hail Storm
- Yellow diamond: Rotating Thunderstorm (Mesocyclone)
- Magenta triangle: Tornado Vortex Signature (pretty heavy!)

When clicking on one of those icons a dialog will appear with detailed information. The storm tracks also display the direction and speed of the storm in the form of an arc. The arc is split in 3 parts: 20, 40 and 60 minutes until the storm reaches that area.

On Google TV:
- Use the D-pad for navigate up/down/left/right
- Use the media forward/back or next/previous buttons to zoom in and out

I've been using this for years and always loved it, but it has never been updated. Recently it refuses to work properly. When this happens the time stamp displays UTC time, the time lapse is very quick and it doesn't display any weather systems. Even after force stopping and restarting it doesn't work. This happens sporadically, but has been happening a lot lately. Because of this I downloaded MyRadar and absolutely love it. It had so many more features and is a lot more useful.

Used to be my go to app for fast, accurate, dependable, up to the minute radar data. You could see a line of showers approaching as you watched it's progress and direction of travel on the app. Would have given it a 5+ star rating. Bragged about it and recommended it to several friends who had inferior apps. Then it updated. Since the update it has turned into an unreliable piece of wasted space on my phone. Wanted to explain what all is now wrong with it, but used up my 500 characters.

May be old, but is VERY effective! I honestly wouldn't change much of anything, maybe they only thing missing is a widget, but the functionality of the app makes up for that. this does exactly what I need no more no less! For me, this app is replacing the 'weather radar widget app' as is got bloated with ads and annoying pop-ups with loud sounds.(something I just will not tolerate!) This app seems to have none of that... therefore it has my KUDOS! 👍👌ðŸĪ—🌏 (Update) crashes on Android 10+ 🙁

I have been using this app for years, but since my phone updated to Android 10, it no longer works. It just pops up a message saying it was developed for an older version of Android and gives me the option to check for updates or cancel. It's been 5 weeks now and still hasn't worked. I check it almost daily, uninstalled and reinstalled all to no avail. I miss it.

Generally works well but sometimes doesn't update. Yeah, I've waited more than 30 seconds. I'd prefer a manual refresh button somewhere (even just a menu item). Just moving or resizing the screen isn't always effective. That said, the app is accurate and very useful.

Got a newer phone and this wonderful app no longer works. Tried to open it and it tells me it was made for older versions and to update it, but there is none. This was the perfect app to check radar in a hurry if stopped along the road to see how long rain you can't see though or blizzard is going to last. Please fix it.

Uldate: Had to uninstall...delay was getting worse... lately this app is not updating when I open it. I have to wait some time refreshing and such then finally the radar shows what's in the vicinity. maybe I even have to close the app a few times and open it again and then some more waiting. I know it's not my internet. I don't know what's going on with the service.

Old, abandoned and no longer reliable. This used to be the best weather radar app because it was simple and always retrieved weather radar data, but only connects about 10% of the time now regardless of carrier or type of phone. I would not bother and find something else.

This app used to have very cool wedge-shaped, 20 minute semicircle rings within to offer predictions of where specific storm cells may travel. I have tried enabling, stopping and restarting, uninstalling, cache clearing, all the usual tech tricks to fix. Nope. If this is now an in-app buy, please make that obvious do I can do that.

This app used to be a great radar app, but lately it won't even open correctly. Instead of showing my time zone as Central, often it opens up with UTC as the time zone and the radar doesn't work. I'm experiencing severe thunderstorms right now but the app shows that it is clear as can be. That's not just irresponsible, it's downright dangerous.

Great application, love the look and feel but it loses stars because 90% of the time it will not refresh. If look at the radar, then go back into app 30 mins later it refuses to refresh even waiting 2-5 minutes. A force quit and restart and it refreshes. Been using the app for many years and am very tired of doing this.

Used to be a great app. Simple and reliable with very smooth overlays unlike most weather apps. Now it is so unreliable I can't count on it at all. It simply won't load the weather data. My internet is fine. It's incredibly disappointing.

Keeps reverting to UTC time. At that time there is no data to show either. I have downloaded the app several times. You can make Raindar work. Deleted the data several times. Then the software will work once or twice. Sad. Was a great app. Wish you would update for new software.

Please update this app. The last update was in 2013. This is the only app review I have ever taken the time to write. It used to be quick and show accurate weather. Now it is slow and unreliable. It doesn't work about 50% of the time I try to use it. I would happily give it 5 stars if it worked properly on my Galaxy S9 or any newer phone. I have had this app on every phone I have owned since 2012. With each new phone Raindar gets left further behind.

Raindar use to be great until Weather Underground got a hold of it. Now it only works about half the time properly. When I know thunderstorms are about to move in, half the time it won't show any weather at all, just a map. Other times, it works OK. Just not reliable like it use to be.

3 stars because it only works for older versions of Android. This was just about my most beloved app. It did one thing and did it fantastically: simple, fullscreen WX RADAR and did it fast. No ads, no superfluous graphics or menus or useless settings/options. Storm coming -> tap icon -> live RADAR image. There are no other apps that come close. If it works on your device, its a 5 star app. I hope the developer is well.

Loved this app! When it come to a very crisp clean accurate and live radar, this is my favorite.. things change, things are forgotten and some things are left to die... this app unfortunately has been left to die.... as many have mentioned, no longer works for Android 10 hasn't been updated since 2013... unfortunately I have to uninstall.. 😞

I have used this app for more than 6 or 7 years and it worked amazingly to know the weather forecast immediately but it stopped working since Android 10 update... there's simply NOTHING like it, I hope they fix the app and put it up to date... I really miss it very much!!!...

I went this app to see where storm was and how ÃŽt was moving. Easy to grasp. Showed roads and highways which was very helpful when driving. Showed me quickly what weather was at home and on my way....just the facts I wanted and not a lot of hoohah I wasn't interested in. Loved it! It has quit working and I am desolated to be without its life-saving weather info. One of the oldest apps I had.....and the best!

Mic. D. Sep 25, 2019

It used to be the only radar I ever used. It was simple to operate, it had no frills just a good accurate read out. Then about a month ago it updated and more times than not it wouldn't open properly or only part of my map would be displayed or it wouldn't work at all. Got rid of it, went to AccuWeather.

An excellant weather radar tracker, except for 1 flaw. When reopening the app, it often shows the prior condition and does not quickly refresh. Currently in Android, the 'close all' function has to be used and then Raindar reopened. They need an quick auto refresh on reopening and a refresh button to refresh on the fly to get 5 stars.

I absolutely love this app and I have loaded it on whatever new Android phone I get. However, I just had to uninstall it because it keeps crashing on my new Pixel XL. I hope they can update it soon and keep up with all of the constantly evolving products.

Won't open after update. Says it won't work for an older android. I have the Galaxy 10 and it's worked fine for years even on older phones, updated last week and haven't been able to even open this app since then. Sad, I've used it for years but it's pointless to keep if it won't even open
