Raptor ID

The first raptor identification app designed for mobile devices, "HawkWatch International's Identification Guide to Raptors" puts expert hawk identification content in the palm of your hand. In this guide to North America's 34 species of diurnal raptors, you'll find nearly 1000 annotated photos, and cutting edge identification video for each species, geared toward helping you identify raptors in flight. If you're just getting started with birding, this app covers the basics; if you're already an expert hawk watcher, this app covers all the variation that can lead to identification confusion, even among the most seasoned birders.

• Developed by HawkWatch International in partnership with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology
• Comprehensive identification content created by Jerry Liguori and Brian Sullivan
• ~1000 annotated photos covering plumage, age/sex, and geographic variation

• Cutting edge ID-focused video showing each species in flight, from multiple angles, and behaviors, including voice-over ID tips from Jerry Liguori

• Range maps with links to interactive seasonal eBird maps
• Vocalizations for each species
• 'Ask the authors' raptor ID question forum

Fantastic bird id app. The videos and commentary are very helpful, for experienced birders and beginner - nobody knows all the field marks to look for, great to have them pointed out! Sometimes I just look at the photos to refresh my memory.

Now that the developers have fixed the various previous problems with the Android version, it is back to being as good as the iOS version. The images and videos now work fine on my Samsung S9+, and I have changed my review from poor to excellent.

Great app! Works well on my Galaxy 8+. The video and audio play. The images load and I can enlarge them. At first I didn't see a way to get out of the app, but pinching the home screen displayed the usual Android icons.

I love this app, lately though, the vocalizations don not work, and with the most recent update, it does not work entirely.

Very useful ID guide for the birds of prey of North America. Though if you are birding further south, you'll need another guide to identify neotropical raptors, since they are not included here.

The content is 5 stars but the poor use of Android interface (e.g. back button exit) is 1 star. You *really* need to fix the UI issues

Only issue is I can't see any of the photos. Video's work great but no photos.

Difficult to use, and only covers American birds.

Great! Should include owls

Updating my earlier review. Reloaded the app after listening to the encore interview with Jerry on the ABA podcast. Now, with Android 12, app works great. Very pleased. [Probably a good app, but, 1) video doesn't work with Android 8.1, and 2) developers won't respond to help requests. Save your money...]

Good for identifying raptors in the lower 48

I love it

Current update has this app working and running much smoother! There's a glitched image on each species page (top left) and back button still exits the app. Looking forward to those fixes. I'm happy to use this invaluable app again. The content is amazing!!!

What an amazing app with amazing photos, verbiage, and video. However, it would be nice if we could zoom into photos to see detail. I'm not a spring chicken anymore and am having a hard time seeing close up. Also, it would be nice to stop the app from closing everytime I hit my phone's back button (many apps let you back up using this function instead of the app's back button). I have closed the app so many times which is frustrating. Love the comparisons between similar species, but would love to see a bit more. This is a five...no six...star app if these could be implemented.

11/4/16 Update 1.0.2 fixed the display issue. Back to 5 stars. Used to be a 5 star great app, BUT images and vocalizations no longer work on either my Nexus 5x android 7.0 or my Nvidia Shield android 6.0.1. Have uninstalled and reinstalled several times but still have same problem. There is no settings menu to direct where database gets installed. The app was last updated on Jan 25, 2016.

This is a fine app EXCEPT that it appears to have a serious bug on my Nexus 6P with Android operating system 7.1.1 (Nougat) The app fills the entire screen from edge to edge and there are no controls for going back, going to the phone's home screen, minimizing the app or closing the app. So, once I open the app, the only way I'm able to escape it is to reboot the phone. Obviously, not acceptable! I have tried all kinds of touching, swiping, prodding and poking and I get no controls, no way to exit the app. I can get to various app pages, such as Home, Introduction, Browse Species, and About Us but cannot escape the app. Please fix ASAP. I have free apps that work without a hitch. This one I paid $9.99 for and I expect better!

Seems to be an orphaned app. Too bad. There's a need, but I certainly would not recommend purchase. See other complaints. Video does not work with Nexus 6p.

Would be a 5 but the videos don't work on my Samsung S9+. I have AT&T wireless and Android 8.0.0. Video does work on the iPad version -- it's really helpful when it works. I tried to contact the help email address from within the Raptor ID app on my phone, but in order to submit it I had to guess some characters that were being shown. It was some sort of Captcha test. I failed to pass 6 times so couldn't submit a bug report from my phone. I've never failed such a test that many times before so I also suspect that interface is not working properly. It was very frustrating that you impose an "I'm a human" test that prevents me from being able to submit a bug report for a product. Instead, I am submitting this by accessing Google Play from a browser on my laptop. It's interesting that you don't seem to need a Captcha barrier for that interface..

Frustratingly buggy. The video would be the most useful aspect of this app since that is content not available elsewhere, but the video simply does not work on either of my Android devices. The app also takes up a huge amount of internal storage with no option to move it to external storage.

i click on 'browse species' then click on a species and the app crashes every time: im using a samsung galaxy s6 edge. very bad bug, this isnt worth buying let alone downloading

This if an irreplaceable tool for anyone serious about IDing raptors, and has 10 gigs free space on their phone.

Never had a video or bug issue. Only issue is cumbersome to navigate back to home page.
