Track your position, set waypoints, find the nearest General Store, hide from the law, hunt your enemies and more with a full screen, real-time view of the in-game map connected directly to your game experience. Use pan and zoom functions to explore, easily spot Gang Members, Wanted Areas, and key locations. I really love this app, but I'm sad there's no support for the app specifically. The support link only goes to the Rockstar support page and you have to choose a game. No companion apps are listed. I can use all features except the map and the profile management has the red dot meaning I'm not connected. I can see my progress, buy things from the catalog, see my journal, etc. Only the map doesn't work for me and it's the part I was really wanting to utilize.
The companion app is a great Idea. However, there seems to be poor implementation and device compatibility. I was able to get this installed on my S6 phone. The app works as intended, and is almost a must have for the game. The downside to this is that the battery will drain at an incredible rate, and being plugged in makes the phone very hot! With the small screen of a phone, you need to pick it up, and almost immediately drop it due to the heat. I tried installing this on a few different tablets (all Android) and found that the app is not compatible. After doing some research, this seems to be a common issue. As far as I can tell, the app just doesn't work with almost all tablets! What a huge oversight! I really hope that Rockstar works on improving compatibility in future updates, otherwise the ratings will suffer.
App is neat, I like the idea and it's well done overall. Only being able to use it on my phone is the worst idea ever. It drains the battery fast and frankly the phone screen is too small for it to be useful (Pixel 2). I have a tablet (Nexus 9) that meets the specs, but alas the app doesn't seem to be compatible with a tablet which is pretty mind blowing. At this point it's getting uninstalled as it is really not worth using on a phone.
New Edit: I lowered my rating of this app because over a month ago the update dropped and ever since the live map doesn't work online. The main reason anyone ever even used this app. I sincerely hope they fix this. Great "IDEA." I love it when it actually works, but a lot of the time it won't connect making it pointless. but this is great for being able to access a live map or see what's in the catalogue etc without leaving free roam screen. but i wish they would fix these bugs.
It seems like it's been a long time since I've used a good companion app but rockstar has brought a great one. The real time map is an awesome component that is extremely useful. I love being able to see a wide view of where I'm going a long with the mini map on the game. Being able to read the journal, view my character, and by clothes are really great features and the design team did a phenomenal job on the styling. Great app and I'm very impressed by it
Good idea but poorly executed. Firstly my phone literally gets so hot that I can't even pick it up after using this app, even though my phone has a big heat pipe (Nokia 8). An app like this should be used on a bigger screen like a tablet, but it doesn't have tablet support for some reason. Also what's the point of looking down on your phone to see the map and objective when u can just follow the mini map on the TV screen?
There's 2 major downsides to this app. One is that I cannot use it on my tablet which is ridiculous. Only my phone? You're drunk rockstar. The second issue is that it disconnects immediately when the screen goes off. So I'm expected to keep my amoled screen on and stagnant at all times just to use the app while playing. What an oversight. it also has almost no purpose.
So many missed opportunities with this app. I paid the additional $10 for the full guide. They basically just put the .pdf version of the guide book i to the app. Horrible experience. Why not build that information into the app instead of requiring me to zoom in and manually search for what i am looking for. Give me an interactive map where i can easily filter and find what i am looking for quickly.
Having a companion app is a good idea. In theory, I like being able to view the map, make in-game purchases, and read the journal even when I'm not playing. But the execution is poor. Forcing the app to be used in landscape when NOBODY uses their phone that way anymore is a mistake. And all the text is so small that the readability is impaired (this is a fault that the game shares as well). And half the buttons in the app take you to external websites. Why bother building the app in the first place if half the content isn't even housed in-app? I also cannot view the map in the app even though my accounts are all linked up and everything else works as intended.
The companion app is pretty good. lots of easy to access info. Although i may not be able to use it as much as i would like to. The persistent hud in the app can be damaging for OLED displays. I have not found any way to dismiss them. Both my phone and tablet have OLED displays and it would be great to be able to hide or dismiss the HUD/UI in the companion app. Even if it is just for the maps section.
Because I only have 500 characters to write this review, I'll make it quick. The app is mostly useless. Instead of showing content in the app, most of the sections link out to an external browser to Rockstar website. Lazy coding, and not worth using. The map connectivity is however pretty interesting, but it drops connection when the screen goes off, which wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't a big pop up in game stating this every single time. The idea is nice, but this is poorly executed junk.
App is great but I don't understand the point of making all the features but one take you to your browser if it's meant to be an app. Why not make it a website instead? Also the map is still not working for me even though it shows my PS4 is paired and the shop and progress tracker both work. So considering I'm missing the main feature and the others take you to your browser the app is not very useful for me at the moment. Fix the map and then we'll talk.
Set it up fine and everything says it was connected at first (Xbox, social club, this app), but when I actually go to use it, it says I'm not playing the game. It literally won't recognize my game is running. Once I got it to successfully sign in, but the map still didn't work. It said I wasn't connected so I clicked on connect and it disconnected everything else. This is so frustrating and useless!
Good in theory but refuses to connect to my game, and on the official troubleshooting it's saying to chance my NAT type to type 1 instead of type 2, which is a right load of cobblers. A hassle for a start, needing you to access your router settings, and would affect other games' multiplayer and voice chat I believe. Everything but this is great though, but since I'm unable to use the map I can only rate it low.
Installed it on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 and I play the game on my Xbox One X. When the companion app works it is great BUT the problem is that it does not stay connected for more than 30 minutes. It looses connection continuously after 20~30 minutes and then it fails to reconnect. The only solution is to restart the tablet. Then after less than 30 minutes it disconnects again and have to restart the tablet again...... and so on. It needs fixing ASAP because when it runs is awesome and very helpfull. I'll could have given it 5☆ if it was working as it should. Until then 2 stars is the best I can give and only because I love Rockstar and I have hope that they will fix it.
not as handy as one would think with redirects to browser for alot of things. I think it's a very cool feature that you can purchase things from the catalogue but would be better if I didnt have to leave app to do it. also the map feature isnt very useful I find its easier to just use the map in game. otherwise I like the idea.
The app is cool just for the map, which works really well on my Note 8 and is nice to have on the side. The problem is that the app requires ARM64 enabled devices, and most tablets aren't, so you're confined to a small cellphone screen. I'd give it 5 stars if I could get it on a tablet, I only knocked one off to be reasonable because I'm not sure if ARM64 is required for the features it has.
Update 15/11/18 I have now installed the app on my iPad and can't restore the purchased guide from my Android phone, it keeps failing. Not happy. It's OK, the app doesn't keep the screen awake for me, so have to touch the screen every so often to stop the phone going to power save and causing the app to disconnect. Would like the app to work with my tablet as well as the phone, map would be easier to view.
My biggest complain is that I can't select the app language so the only way to make this work is to change my phone system language every time before using this app. Also, most of the functionality is just opening links in your browser, which is meh. The map feature works great but drains your battery and your phone will get really hot. It's a nice concept but with a mediocre execution.
This app is a lousy companion. It absolutely destroys battery life, and for no major benefit. Being able to view your live in-game map is a very marginal benefit that are basically never use. Almost all the main menu links open a web browser. The pricey strategy guide does not carry through to other platforms (!!) and is very cumbersome to navigate. Very poor by Rockstar.
The app COMPLETELY drains the battery of my Galaxy S7 in about 7 hours. Even when running in the background with the screen turned off. Can't install it on my tablet either. The app doesn't show up when accessing the Play Store on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and on my PC it says; "No eligible devices for app install". In it's current form this app is unusable.
