Reddit: The Official App

Funny cat photos, trending news stories, and the best discussions on the internet—these are just a few of the awesome things the official Reddit app does best.
On Reddit, there’s a community for every subject imaginable: your favorite sports team, relationship advice, memes, the latest in news and politics—all in real time.

And if you like gifs (or jifs, jiffys, glyphs, ifs, however you choose to mispronounce it), we’re positive you'll love it.

What’s that you say, girl? “What about a community dedicated solely to images of cats standing on their hind legs?”

We got that, too.

Whether you’re into movies or space travel, baking or weight training, cheesy dad jokes or more NSFW humor, world news or Hollywood gossip—or all of the above—you can instantly share your content and ideas with an audience of millions.

We’re not saying Reddit is like all your favorite apps put together. But if we were saying that, we’d tell you it has:

• the trendy headlines of Twitter
• the educational content of Quora
• the viral pics of Memebase and Imgur
• the jokesters of Tumblr
• the lols of 9GAG and theCHIVE
• the cringeworthy personal stories of FML and Fail Blog
• the rage comics of fourchan
• and the powerful, human stories found only on Reddit.

(Oops, we went full circle.)

So the next time you’re bored and need a break—wait, you’re bored right now? Why are you still reading this? Download the app already!

Those cats won’t stand on their hind legs forever...

Android user. Fix your bugs! Everytime I go to homepage of Subreddits, 1 is either lucky enough to load properly as it should, or 1 is unlucky enough to hit me with the "trouble loading data". Ofc the "unlucky ones" TURNS OUT to be the Subreddits I visit regularly! In the meantime, I got fixes: -Visit Subreddits in the search bar, which is horrible. -Activate anony-mode, which is also horrible. Point is, I shouldn't have to do either of those things? It's not normal??? And im not the only one!

The new video player isn't as simple to use as the previous one, you can't just pause a video by tapping it anymore, and -because it also takes care of gifs- gifs don't loop anymore but they still autoplay, too bad if you missed its first seconds; and it also forces dark mode onto you, which I ain't really a fan of. Links to social media posts don't open them in-app either anymore. Some quality of life issues that can be easily fixed I believe

Discover feature is absolutely horrible, especially since it took away the ability to easily find our favorite subreddits. They keep changing things around that don't need to be changed, like the profile button just switched sides negating years of muscle memory. Also, the video player never works properly. It's completely random on if it will work or not. Super super frustrating. It's just a culmination of poor decisions at this point.

Developers make it impossible to want to use this app. There is NO consistency with video playback. Sometimes when you're in a full screen video you've tapped into, back works fine to get back to the thread, and then again to go back to the main feed. Other times, back once goes to the top of the main feed completely. It's infuriating.

It's very buggy, content is good but the bugs make it hard to navigate. I try to open a post and it resets to the first post in your feed, and duplicates posts and that are not the same post when I click them. (Update) it's gotten worse. When I try to open a post, it takes either a long time to open or just does not open. Also videos stop playing after a while and it slows down if opened for too long, even in the background.

After breaking most of the videos after the last update, they have now changed the UI in a way that pretty much ruins the way I use it. Swiping up after watching the video now makes it scroll to the next one instead of closing it, and swiping left no longer takes you to the next post. The "skip to next comment" button is also broken; it keeps moving to the topmost left corner (under my camera) and it doesn't work there. You can move it (with a lot of effort), but it just defaults back.

Its a very good app, IMO. Is it perfect? As nothing in this universe is perfect, how could this or any app be perfect? I've no complaints. I've noticed nothing wrong and many things right. This is discussion, the sharing of opinion. It's interesting. It's entertaining. At times, I guess the comments are obtuse, again, in my opinion. But unless you're looking for a program to convert for satellite re-entry, it stands very well just as it is.

Reddit just can't seem to make a working video player. The old one was garbage, and the new one is somehow even worse, how do you screw up that badly? And the UI keeps changing - not being able to access the profile menu while viewing a subreddit was an awful design choice, but changing the side of the sidebar is not the solution. Sidebars aren't meant to be on the right side of the screen, neither from the design nor UX perspective. Honestly, this app is just becoming a pile of poor decisions.

Obligatory video player complaints aside (which are still prevalent as of editing this review), trying to upload posts with multiple images doesn't work properly. For the past three years, every SINGLE time I try to upload image gallery posts, I get stuck on "uploading". I've had this issue across every single Android device I've ever used for the past three years. I don't have this problem with third-party versions of this app, which I really wish wasn't the case.

X. G. May 20, 2022

upset that it is extremely rare to be able to save gifs. the video player doesn't work more often than that, the amount of scrolling you need to see non-repeated posts is insane. and sometimes the feed will refresh for no reason. it would be nice if you had the option to set it to only refresh when the refresh button is pressed and make it accessible on settings

The app won't even load for me for about the past 2 weeks. I literally have to uninstall the app, re-download the app and then log back in, to get the flippin' app to work. Then, once I close the app once I'm done using it for the time being, the issue happens ALL OVER again the next time I try to open the app. It's crazy lit, let me tell u... 🥴

The video player is astoundingly bad, and has been that way for a long time. They changed the video interface to look more like TikTok instead of fixing the player itself while making it even worse. Rest of the app is fine, I guess, but displaying still images adequately is hardly an achievement.

GEV. May 9, 2022

Platform itself is decent but the video player is the buggiest thing ever. After scrolling for a while, it just doesn't play any videos. Not to mention whenever you watch a video, it opens a bootleg Tik Tok UI that doesn't let you scroll through image and text posts. Also when you minimize the app, it sometimes forgets a ton of posts that you were looking at and puts you back at a random post you already read.

The app has been good for years, but has slowly declined the last year or two. it's pretty plagued by annoying bugs. Videos often won't play after a while, profiles stop loading after a few scrolls, the feed and user profile both glitch after exiting a video. The feed refreshes to the top when you back out of videos, and users profiles will refresh to random points in their feed when back out of videos. Needs some work.

All these updates, but I can't get it to swipe to another picture if someone has a post with multiple photos. It refuses to show the other photos and now it crashes if I even try. This has been ongoing for months. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help, not does cleaning cache. I view a lot of photography boards and this is incredibly annoying.

Good app, but dear lord this has one of the most godawful video players I have ever experienced. If you have a solid internet connection, it works! Until it doesn't feel like it, then nothing loads. What if you want to back out of the video? Boom, you just went back to the reddit homepage and it reloaded it, losing all your scrolling progress or whatever sub you were browsing. And theres no option to keep scrolling in the same sub (the recommended feed jumps to other subs when you scroll).

Zac. S. May 21, 2022

Since the latest update, most posts with videos embedded just never play. It's infuriating and completely ruins the experience, because I have to close the app fully and restart it for it to be fixed, only for it to happen again 10 minutes later. Edit: I made this review months ago and this issue still hasn't been fixed. Videos embedded in the app will still regularly just break and never play.

Tom. May 21, 2022

Have had this app for a few years now and it's worth. Recently have had fewer to no issues (all it really had for issues was mainly crashing, other than that maybe the slow load into the next thread or just refreshing the home page, but with little phone experience you could of just hit the back button once then swip down refresh and bingo) but since it seems they've fixed the crashing its been a great app! 👍🏻

Emm. May 13, 2022

Every update gets worse. Use Joey or RiF. This app won't even show you the volume mute on an ad unless you slide click it, but then when you release to press the volume to mute, it dissappear. With user posted videos the volume button is always present. They are trying to trick us into clicking the ads. It's so deceitful. It's so aggrevating. This is when I uninstall.

I had an old car that behaved like this; Fickle, inconsistent. The app (and web) lack constancy, or stability. Both are given to to erratic changeableness. App is fine if you just want to look around. Oh, app and desktop bare no resemblance. Over due modernization. Time to plow some of these profits into the application. Take it or leave it. Guaranteed to make you pull you hair out. It's a stupid app.

Jel. May 21, 2022

I swear this app has an update every day but there are still way too many issues with the app itself. Video player will not work if you view one video then scroll to the next, video player will corrupt audio for some users but not others. Refreshing the app is also confusing because itll show the original page, again, but if you click on a post itll take you to another one. Not to mention the type of content that is even allowed in this app, if you are under 18, seriously, do not join.

Kwa. S. Apr 28, 2022

This app is too heavy. It takes more than 30 seconds to load a simple image preview. On login, the feed takes more than a minute to show up and videos never play. I thought it was my network but other apps like YouTube were behaving just fine with the same network status. Also, it makes no sense for me to take a whole 5 minutes looking for a Logout Button. That's bad User Experience

H.. B. Apr 29, 2022

I don't like the new feature that shows your latest notifications at the top of the newsfeed. I like being able to decide if I want to go back and look at it, such as ignoring the red notification symbol or marking as read. Sometimes there are toxic people you want to stop seeing replies from but this feature puts it all at the front to see. Don't even see an option to turn this feature off. Please either get rid of it or allow it to be turned off.

Rob. H. May 13, 2022

Great website - awful app. Super slow, incomprehensible video player, and constant bugs. The latest has caused the 'skip to next parent comment'(very useful) button move out of it's intended default place, and while it can be moved back, it's actually right beside 'back' button, so you usually end up just exiting the thread &the cycle repeats.

Par. W. May 11, 2022

I enjoy the content but I can only scroll through a subteddit for >10 minutes before the videos stop playing. Not that they skip, buffer, or load, they just won't play at all. I have fiber internet and 100% sure it is not my connection speed. I have to close app completely then scroll back down through the subreddit and hope I can find where I left off.. its getting frustrating

Har. B. May 6, 2022

A good app. However the new video player is utterly terrible. an obvious copy from other sites like Instagram and TikTok, but it is just way worse. When you want to escape the viewed image you have to tap the tiny button in the corner, instead of previously just swiping up which was way easier. The old video player was bad but this is slightly worse. Also, there is a bug where if you view a post on a profile and go back to the profile, the last 5 posts or so dissapear until you reload the page.

Jam. M. Apr 29, 2022

Unlike others I don't care about the video player, I don't find it too bad. What is bad is how posts with multiple pictures work, they hardly ever show the full image in my feed so I have to click on them to open them up, but it's soooo laggy swiping between pictures. Sometimes it just won't swipe to the next picture at all.
