- message delivery is unreliable. Seems to be so especially in voice messages -Hard to use and lacks basic functionality. -Hard to read text and no settings for typography\accessibility. -No way to clear chat history or multiselect messages or set autodelete for a room..!!!??!?!?!? -Sharing matrix contact link pages doesnt work on mobile at least, and how to search users within the app with the users matrix address?
I'm rooting for Element, but unfortunately the Android app is completely unusable for me with encryption. Constantly getting "Waiting for this message, this may take a while."
I host my own Matrix server and I've used this app for a few years now. It's great when it works. Unfortunately, there are often issues with delivery. I've had multiple times where I receive a notification but clicking on it takes me to the chat where it sits trying to load the message for a while. This is not consistent but seems to be more frequent as of late. Nonetheless, I'm a big proponent of Matrix as a concept and recognize it's a complex undertaking.
I had high hopes for this app. Unfortunately, they were misplaced. Just tried to send a video (three times!) and it wouldn't go through. Every time it failed. Just sent the same video through Signal, and, no problems. I'm aware of the security differences and would prefer to use Element, but, if it can't even send a video, what is it good for?
Still missing some features such as encrypted room searching. Occasionally, the client will fail to display some encrypted messages. I've had to reinstall the app on multiple occasions to fix this. Clearing the cache didn't work. Lately, messages seem to get marked as read on the mobile client, only for them to show unread on the desktop. Today, I even had all my rooms disappear from the mobile app, although they're still displaying on the desktop.
much better than session and good environment, but notification issue on Android device not on web or arch desktop client zip format. please fix notifications issue and sending sms is unreliable and veery slow please increase server capacity
Great app. As today (2022) I think this is one of the best IM apps and clients for DESCENTRALIZED communicatio. In addition to that, this app allows communicate with direct messages and rooms. The emojis and messages are awesome. This app also allows you to add reaction over each message. Definitely I am trying to stop using WA or any other centralized platform as Telegram, etc.
I used to have a lot of problems with this platform but this recent update has really improved the experience for me. I think I might start considering this as a main system of communication.
Haven't even gotten to try it. There's no forgot username button. Can't sign up because email is being used. Apparently I signed up through a PC version and don't remember but I can't recover the account. I'm not making a 2nd email just for this either.
4/5 Minus 1 star for not being able to order rooms by alphabetical order. I don't want the room with most recent activity always moving to the top.
My favorite messenger, I can trust the encryption, it doesn't require access to contacts and notifications work reliably
It's my favorite IM, but the UI needs to be improve to see messages on the left and right bubbles, which make more comfortable using the app. The current UI is prone to miss messages due to showing all the messages on left sides of UI.
Critical bug prevents you from connecting to an existing server with an existing account. Can't even use right now.
More and more buggy. Suddenly requires registration enabled to log into existing account, throws SSL error without and details showing to debug issue.
Good client overall, with some bugs. Everything works well in general. Verifying others' sessions sometimes appears to succeed but doesn't record that verification happened.
Incredible amounts of user data control, love it. Updated after use of spaces, addresses a lot of issues users are using and continues to improve in reliability. The desktop client is just fantastic as well, and really shows the power of [matrix]. Edit: There seems to be a lot of bugs in the notification system on the latest versions, as such reducing my rating to 3 stars.
Functional and full featured, just not a great experience yet. Changes have been pretty continuous though, and it shows promise.
A really good app, but can be dificoult to set up and add friends. Especially if you have friends or family who is not good with stuff like this. I love the app though and higly recomend it.
Works great except some messages are lost in transit. All I get is "Waiting for this message, this may take a while". I'm already having another conversation with the same person but for some reason that one message is still not showing. Also, we really need a feature to disable notifications if I'm logged in to the desktop app.
This is the messaging app and features I've been wanting for the last 20 years! - Doesn't require any personal identifying info. - Doesn't require a phone/app. - Decentralized - End to end encrypted - Open Source (if it's not, then how do you really know it's secure?) - A small feature with huge value: The ability to set individual notification alert sounds. Nothing is more annoying than hearing a notification and having to interrupt what you're doing to see if it's something you need to attend to. Now you can tell by the sound. I loath all messengers that don't support that.
Great app, and it's only going to get better as both it and the matrix protocol mature. It's already a lot more customisable than the alternatives. 1min to register and get going, and you don't need to provide your email nor phone number. The only downside I could find is that email notifications are on by default. It caused some annoyance to people that are less technologically apt, and so they needed help to find the correct settings.
Riot is an open, secure, and decentralized group communication app. I'd say it's kind of like an open source discord, minus the gamer focus. It's really easy to use while also being secure, as it supports end to end encryption. You can even run your own server and connect to everyone else, it's like email where everyone has their own address and some on different servers. Doesn't use much data and notifications work great. Overall, this is an excellent app and I would recommend.
In general, I am very fond of riot and matrix in general, but I would like to point out that the upgrade path is absolutely sub optimal. While I do not have a problem with being forced to upgrade to a newer version of riot, especially when security concerns are the reason for the force upgrade, I have an issue with not being notified of the upgrade and then not receiving any chat notifications from the old application any more. A heads up would have been nice. In addition, you could have ported the settings to the new app, having to reenter everything was a nuisance. But as I said before, overall, you are all doing a great job!
Currently one of the best communications platforms available, however the UI could use a significant overhaul and I believe that alone may be the main reason why it hasn't won over the masses. Kind of a shame, although unsurprising, and in contrast, I actually prefer a small userbase anyway. Nowhere is safe, but RIOT is more secure than most to those who value privacy.
It's a good app, with developers who care about the project. It does as advertised, but ONLY for the patient. Unfortunately, there are a few issues that lead me to believe that release may have been a touch early (I blame the founding app really, not current dev. Be fair.) There are some stability issues on less mainstream devices (particularly UI, and formatting needs more work), but they don't appear often, and the devs work hard. More time and this app will be gorgeous, I know it.
Every update is 0 steps forward and 2 steps back. At this rate, by Christmas the entire app will just be a bug report screen. They continue making small design tweaks while ignoring major issues, failing to have or run regression tests, and create more and more bugs. Messages get stuck on your screen permanently, the enter key doesn't send messages, voice call notifications don't come through, and now switching apps causes Element to back you out of your room to your room list. Why?
The app is quite nice, and aside from rarelt crashing when someone sends a message (the occurences are weeks apart), I've never had any problems with it. Some of the / commands are exclusive to certain versions (i.e., polls are Android only, / commands don't work at all for iOS mobile according to my friends, some commands are only on PC), but otherwise I have no complaints.
Not sure if it's a Matrix or Element issue but there is some reliability issues... Also I would love to have the options of 1 to 1 direct message and rooms in the same tab. But other than that, it's a very sleek and well done app ! Also of course I support the principle of decentralised chat. So Kudo guys!
