Road to Hana GyPSy Drive Tour

I really wanted to like it but I had technical issues with it. It might just be with my setup. Every time I unplugged my phone from Android Auto, left the car and returned, the auto file would only play the first 10 to 15 seconds of each clip for each waypoint. I would have to restart my phone to get the whole files to play. That's hard to do since my wife was in the backseat with the toddler. I have a Pixel 2 and it was paired with the car over bluetooth, and also setup with the Android Auto available in the rental car. I don't know if the android auto could have caused an issue. On the return trip, it worked perfectly since I didn't have to leave the car to see points of interest.

One word -- Brilliant! Buy the app and you will love it! I bought the app an hour before doing the Hana drive. It turns out to be the one of the best decisions I made in Maui. It is really like having a local in the car telling you everything in real time. The app knows exactly where you are and the timing of narration is simply perfect. It has a lot of practical information (where to park, where to turn, etc), and tons of relevant background information. Best of all, it does not force you to make stops, but gives you all the information so you can decide yourself if you want to stop or not. On the way back, the app turns into a historian and somehow keep me thoroughly awake and entertained during the 2-hour return drive. I had three guide books with me as well but the app by far the best and only thing I needed. Technical information: I connected the phone to car speaker by bluetooth, and did not use Android Auto to avoid potential issues. Once you are at the starting point of the tour, no map or direction is needed. The app will provide driving directions in a very clear way.

Overall this app is a great way to take in everything on the Road to Hana. With really good recommendations, and maybe more importantly lets you know when something probably isn't worth the time. However, there were some annoyances: Some of the alerts for sights were poorly timed to know when it was time to pull off. On the way back it repeated all of the entries. It seemed to get confused which direction we were going so we missed some of the history to hear about a site already seen in the am.

This app changed out entire experience on the road to Hana. The drive itself was beautiful, be it with the additional commentary from this app, we were able to learn along the way and look out for things we would have otherwise missed. My only qualm was that when we opened other apps, we would constantly get notification saying that GyPSy was working in the background, but it wouldn't play the audio if it wasn't the active app.

Got this app last minute as I was trying to nail down an itinerary for our Hana drive. Putting everything in Google maps and trying to make it work with Android auto in the rental car was becoming a disaster. The app worked great. The tour guidance is spot on with prompts and landmarks called out ahead of time so you can find things easily. Options on what to do are left to you with enough description to make a decision. This is a great purchase.

Absolutely worth the money! We had considered a guided tour knowing nothing about the trip & knew we would miss some great things but saw this. We got on the road a little after 5am & was able to hit many of the spots, spend time enjoying & taking pictures, & even revisited our favorites. It's very easy to use - just turn it on & it guides the whole way giving plenty of time to decide to stop or not. No worries about cell service but make sure to plug in your phone while using. Highly recommend!

This app was really good. We had two cars and my brother told me they bought it, so I figured I would do it too. Had low expectations and WOW, I couldn't have imagined doing the Road to Hana without it. It was really, really good. The narrator's voice is good. He has local knowledge, good history and wasn't too much talking. Five-Stars for sure. The GPS kicked on at the right moments and the voice and was perfectly in sync. We had a rented jeep and was able to pair the phone to the stereo

This app was amazing. First off we love listening to music when driving so when we realized this was a an audio play app we got bummed for a second. Then we realized as the guy was giving us a tour of the road he just played when it was time, paused our music and then our music automatically resumed once he was finished. We thought that was awesome. Anywho we learned about Hana but also about the beautiful island itself and the rich history behind it. We highly recommend it!!!! Well worth the $6

This app made the trip so much easier! Without it I don't know how we would have known what to prioritize or where to go. The commentary was also really informative and funny. My only comment would be that he very much discouraged continuing around the island past Hana, but we found that to be a really scenic drive and not any more difficult than the windy "road to Hana"...in fact the only issue was that it was unpaved at times, but overall it was much less windy and just a beautiful landscape.

Awesome tour guide for the road to Hana. He offers many suggestions and identifies which ones are the most important. I stopped at one he suggested to skip and he was right. Very detailed instructions for the drive. You don't need a signal for it to operate which is a must as most of the trip is without a signal. He gives a decent amount of information throughout the drive and on the way back gives an interesting recount of Hawaiian history. I highly, highly recommend this app.

this app was great for our drive along the road to Hana. it started by explaining the driving etiquette. The narrator became part of our group and we looked forward to his guidance and commentary each time we got back in the car. There was plenty of time before the stop where the narrator explained what was there allowing us to make a decision if we wanted to stop or not. he also gave us the pros and cons of stopping. There were 5 "must see attractions". I highly recommend this app!

Excellent work! This app was very informative and entertaining. I read several reviews that stated it didn't work with Android Auto or didn't resume when disconnected/reconnected. This was not my experience at all. Road to Hana worked flawlessly the entire trip. Well done! Very much worthy the money.

We just used this app today and it was an awesome experience. We made the recommended stops and learned so much on the way. I wish we could stay at each place for longer time, although we already spent 8 hours on the road to Seven Sacred Pools, where we learned that the Hana Highway would be closed for us to drive the same way back to the Wailea side. The driving back from the backside of Hana in darkness was actually fun but really risky. It'd be great if it could alert planned road closures.

This was perfect. We named the narrator Carl. He gave a great guided tour with details on directions & turns, places to see, places to eat, what to expect and a nice dose of history. We could stop when we wanted or pass over spots where we didn't want to stop. All via GPS which is important to note when traveling areas with no cell service.

Phenomenal tour guide! Extremely easy to use. Very user friendly. There is literally no way you can go wrong with this app. Don't waste your money on the big tour groups. Rent a car at the airport, download this app and you will receive more than enough info to understand everything about the road to Hana and you will end going to far more places than the big tour groups take you!

I thought the tour was very well done! Gives you a great idea of what to see and background on the area and the recommended stops were exceptional!. I would skip the arboretum, though, and recommend the Garden of Eden (which costs)...it is beautiful! I am so glad we used this app! Next best thing to a personal tour from a local!

Very informative and worked flawlessly with Android auto in the Ford Mustang rental. I was able to run a downloaded offline Google map of Maui, play music, and still be able to hear the guidance from the app. It even paused and restarted our tunes! Totally worth the $ - we learned a lot and enjoyed the guidance!

Brilliant App. Very accurate and provided essential details for this adventure. Would have missed so much if we had not had this app. It also provided accurate timings which helped in deciding what stops to make in order to return prior to sundown. Provides parking information as well which is critical on this narrow winding road.

This app is amazing. Even the rain and the cows synced up with the audio. The vendor recommendations were spot on. The only suggestions I have would be to add music, or commentary on the local flora and fauna. It really feels like having a guide in the car with you.

Not sure what Jacob's deal was on the one-star review below, clearly homeboy is a clown. This app is amazing and well worth the money. The voice is fine. This app made the road to Hana worth it. It works even when you don't have cell service, and even if you're saving battery on airplane mode. This made the trip so much more interesting. Highly, highly recommended.

i so rarley purchase apps. I did for this and am so glad I did. It worked great, was very informative and helped manage our timing. it even made the trip safer by giving detailed heads up about upcoming turn offs or parking areas. The narrator was of the caliber of David Attenborough.

Well what can I say, this app is absolutely amazing, we used it for a trip along Hana Highway and it was just like having a guide sitting next to us, in fact we even named him Bob(i think the only improvement I would recommend is that the guy introduces himself at the beginning), we even started to say " where to next Bob" when we got back to the car. His tips and recommendations were spot on even where to eat( the fish and chips were delicious)

Best $6 I spent! This app was great and worked great the entire time. We spent 13 hours on the road and it didn't dissapoint! Highly recommend. Actually wish I would've spent a few more dollars and bought the complete Maui guide. I'm sure I would've been able to find a few more gems that way. Super informative and gave a great history of the island on the trip back!

This is the only app I have ever felt compelled to write a review for. This app is great and made our trip to Hana amazing. The guide is informative and occasionally funny. They tell you where to avoid and where to pull over at easier places. Will definitely be looking at more Gypsy Guides!!
