RootDim [root]

RootDim was formerly known as SuperDim. RootDim requires root privileges on your device.
RootDim has been largely superceded by our ScreenDim, which does not require root (though it also has an enhanced root mode, which on some newer devices may work more reliably than RootDim) and has useful features like presets in the notification area.

RootDim lets you dim LCD screens (and a few OLED ones) to very low levels--lower than the OS normally allows (that's why you need root privileges)--to save night vision. This will be particularly useful for serious amateur astronomers.

On some devices you can also turn off LEDs (e.g., power LED).

If you have ChainFire3D, RootDim will let you conveniently control the nightmode settings together with the brightness settings.

You can save up to five profiles that can be restored with a single touch in the RootDim screen. The profiles include LCD backlight brightness and nightmode settings (if applicable). Long touch on profile button to save, short touch to load.

You can also create launcher shortcuts for particular saved profiles and for cycling through all the profiles.

If RootDim doesn't work on your device, email me at [email protected] before leaving a low rating. Maybe I can fix it.

Note 1: Some devices don't allow going below the minimum value allowed by the OS. There is really nothing I can do about that.

Note 2: There is a special feature for some Archos 70/101 devices that have a firmware problem that prevents them from waking up properly when they've been put to sleep with a low brightness (this problem occurs even if you don't have SuperDim). Go to Menu|Options and choose that option if you have one of these devices, and it should fix the problem.

Note 3: For all the users who would like a widget, please remember the launcher shortcut feature.

Perfect app, was able to set my device's brightness to almost 0 with no issues, helpful when you're reading or trying to keep the battery alive for a long time.

Granting root, should give an access to each RGB light scheme modification, but this apps asking for root permission just like normal swiitch to reduce the brightness same as the in the settings... So why ask root permission??? Its should goes to control the power delivery to lcd light to shine more less or Dim the light... This apps is no doffrent then other trash app

Love this app

I love this app I just discovered. It works as it is supposed to at least on a Motorola Droid X2 with CM7. Just be sure to have root access or it won't. I have had no issues with it thus far. I expect much of that comes from using CyanogenMod 7 which is stock Android rather than the Motorola Blur Android. If you have problems consider going to XDA to get a more stock OS for your device.

Im a battery saving addict would love to have this app keep my screen at the dimmest possible setting even after restart, it also occassionally reverts back after waking up the tablet from its deep sleep. Great app though, much better then those apps who use filters, whuch actually wastes energy.

Developer should make a list of devices this won't allow dimming past stock minimum. Absolutely no difference between 1 and 30 - 255. Stop wasting users time when you know this doesn't work with certain devices. GIVE US A LIST OF BROKEN DEVICES!

I never was too happy with the lowest brightness setting on my Droid3. This app made it go a lot dimmer. For quick access, the developer mentions using the Launcher. On the Droid3, simply hold press down on an empty area of your screen, and create a new Shortcut. In the list of shortcuts, you can see references to the various profiles. Excellent app, thank you!

It works. It gets the brightness level down to where my eyes aren't bothered and it doesn't bother my fiance when I'm on it while she's sleeping. It doesn't go drastically below the system minimum, but its more than noticeable and exactly what I needed. Widgets would be awesome. I didn't understand the launcher reference in the instructions. Overall, solid app. Thanks!

Most other app that "dim"just place a dark filter over the screen but keep the backlight at the standard dim setting on the phone. This app actually continues to drop the brightness of the backlight so you are left with a much clearer looking image. If you compare a gradient color image (blue fade to white across screen) you will Boyce the gradient stays smooth with this app, on others it becomes very vet choppy.

Wow this is an amazingly welcome app! Finally, full optimal light control. Not the brand/android decided automation with low battery dimming and such, making it impossible to view your stuff for hours with high capacity batteries, like Anker, TQTHL, zerolemon etc. This app is a true savior. And no annoying ads. All options have widgets. Perfect!

Motorola Xoom 4G: About half the time, when I turn the screen back on, the screen has been dimmed to my lowest setting. This means if I'm in the sunlight, I can't see my screen at all! I have to approximate where my unlock pattern should be and then go to the home screen and tap the shortcut icon I have to restore the brightness to a good setting.

Basically I installed this just to see how low the brightness could get. When I found out it couldn't get lower than the system settings, I uninstalled the app, but the apps brightness settings were now my system settings. The brightness literally increased exponentially at the touch of my finger. By mistake I increased to max and it was so bright the screen started to get hot quickly and the screen began to flicker. This is dangerous. You should give the ability to restore stock system settings.

Another user said it didn't work on his Nexus 5, but I bet to differ. It works great for me. (Maybe he had another automatic adjusting program installed and on auto, like Lux?) Goes all the way down to 1. Awesome. There are a few issues. If you lock the setting, the screen will not turn off when you lock the device. Also, there is no built-in automatic adjustment feature, which is unfortunate. Otherwise, works fine.

A few software glitches are there. Sometimes it brightness returns to normal when phone is unlocked. Sometime brightness return to normal even when screen is on. When you check the lock and turn off screen and the turn it back on screen doesn't light up! duh. It lack consistency. But its the best concept by far out there.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 has an annoying feature: when the battery gets quite low, the phone forcibly makes the screen really dim to extend battery life. Note: this is nothing to do with the auto screen brightness seting or power saving settings- none of those make a difference once the battery gets low. This app is the only solution I've found. It allowed me to set whatever brightness I wanted, even when the battery is almost empty.

My (rooted) phone uses IPS crystal screen and the lowest brightness level is still strenuous to my eyes. This app really saved me. I could have gladly paid for it if it's a paid version. A million thanks to the developers.

The app works great except that it doesn't stay at level 3 dim state, which I'd like for it to. Pls developer, kindly fix this bug so that after unlocking my screen, or evening rebooting my phone, the app should retain level 3 dim state: where I want it to be. Thanks so much!

I used this all the time on kitkat and can confirm it works as intended. However I recently updated to Android 5.0 and it doesn't work. Whenever I try to move the brightness below the stock level it stops me won't let me continue

I'm on a nook tablet dual booting cm 7. I love the ability to go below default brightness. It works really well at night. The problem is the lock. I use the nook app which has its own brightness. I tried to lock it at around 10 to read at night. The problem is that when I lock it, it reboots the tablet into stock os when I put it to sleep.

It's not working for me on my huawei honour. I am rooted but it's just not working. I had the settings on min but the brightness is not lower than the stock min. I tried screendim and it did work too with the brightness setting. Only setting the contrast lower helped. I'm glad it did, but the app keeps crashing!
