Roscommon Centenary Programme

Welcome to the Roscommon 1916
- 2016 Centenary Programme of Events. This programme has been developed out of a comprehensive community participation and engagement process and with over 50 events taking place it is at its very core a 'peoples programme'.
This app categorizes the events into 6 categories and presents descriptive information on each event including when it is taking place, where it is taking place, and a details on what each event is about. The user can also view the geographic location of each event on a interactive map which will assist in locating and navigating to events, and in planning itineraries.

County Roscommon, like all counties, provides its own setting and contribution to the history of the period. From the Great War 1914 – 1918 and the many soldiers from the County who served on the battlefield , to the Irish Home Rule & Government of Ireland Act (1914),the influence of Douglas Hyde and his resignation from the Gaelic League in 1915, to the Easter Rising in 1916 and the arrests in Roscommon in the aftermath of the rising.

The role of Castlerea native Fr Michael O’ Flanagan in this period is recalled, as is the recognition and contribution of women involved in Cumann Na mBan, the election of Count Plunkett in the North Roscommon by election of 1917, the first Dail Eireann (Assembly of Ireland) in 1919, through to the War of Independence and on through to the very divisive Civil War. The birth, development and character of our own local government system from the period and the symbolic development and opening of the new Civic Offices in 2016 are all subjects that form and shape our planned programming for this period.

We have developed and compiled a strong comprehensive programme for Ireland 2016, addressing each of the seven national programme strands. The approach is to ensure that the history of the period, historical figures, the arts, literature, music, theatre, exhibitions heritage, educational, young people’s involvement and local events are all represented to produce a commemorative programme that will leave a lasting impression.
