The wireless, solar-powered SailTimer Wind Instrument™ transmits wind speed and direction from the masthead. This mini-app receives the Bluetooth Low Energy (also called Bluetooth 4) transmissions, and provides them to other apps. Then they can easily display the data without needing to do a lot of technical work on receiving Bluetooth 4. The free API does that work for them.
If your phone/tablet goes to sleep while the API is running (either in the foreground, or with the desktop in view), data will continue to be received from the Wind Instrument. When you turn on the phone/tablet again, you can still view wind speed and direction in the Wind Gauge or other app without needing to re-establish the Bluetooth 4 connection. The Sharing button allows crowd-sourcing of live wind maps, which can continue when the device is asleep.
There is also a Disconnect button that is handy when leaving the boat, or if you want to save power in your mobile device and in the Wind Instrument when not in use. The Wind Instrument uses about 44% less power when Bluetooth is not connected.
Use the SailTimer Wind Gauge™ app with this API to view the apparent wind speed and wind angle. Or use this API with third-party apps if you have a favorite that supports the SailTimer Wind Instrument™.
We made the first masthead anemometer that could transmit directly to mobile devices, and the SailTimer Wind Instrument™ is the next generation. Because it is wireless, there are no wires to install down the mast. It is also small enough (in size and price) to use on boats of all sizes. The specifications of your device may indicate if it uses Bluetooth 4, which is supported on Android version 4.4 (KitKat) and newer versions such as 5.0 (Lollipop) and above. If you need to check what version of Android you have it is in Settings
