Audio never works. 5th and mission always stops playing half way through. I don't think I've ever gotten to listen to a whole audio segment. Articles that are updated need something to get you to the updated part when you have already read the original version. I want the update, but I'm tired of rereading the same article.

The app has proved to be even more useless than it appeared to be when it debuted. The Chronicle has apparently abandoned any notion of carrying the previous day's news and sports stories in it's paper edition, so you'd think the app could be used for that purpose, but it isn't. Instead, you get a confusing mix of current and outdated stories, most which don't qualify as "news." A good tool wasted and, in my opinion, an embarrassment.

The digital age is upon us! I still enjoy having the Sunday Chronicle delivered. Disappointed in the new Weekend Sporting Green however. I just have to search digitally for in depth box scores, etc. Keep up the wonderful reporting! Inciteful thoughts and writing them up are a lifeblood!

I pay for a subscription, but it won't show me details. Doesn't send me an email when I say I lost my password and I keep forgetting to phone during business hours to complain or cancel. No value at all to this app

Hopeless, hapless - way easier to use the unlimited desktop e-edition. Too many ads, blocks, and sign-in options to trap me beyond the 99cent 12-week trial subscription right from day one.

A lot of notifications, will need to block and when I click on it, the article doesn't even load most of the time! Sometimes when scrolling thru the app, the headline links don't work. No dark mode. But more efficient to get news on the go.

I have subscribed for years to the Sunday Chronicle. The delivery is always perfect. I do not have time for the daily but I do have time for the online version. I appreciate the update on news. Very happy with this.

Love the great local take, but I'm almost always directed to a different story when I click on a headline or on an alert. I've given up on the alert function altogether because of the misdirection.

I like the Chon but I think I'll just stick to the online version. It's 50% useless if I can't read the other subscribers comments. I don't enjoy it as much without my neighbors trolling each other on a daily basis and I really like other people's veiwpoint on the topics makes it like a bookclub.

Cannot save articles to read later. Links to articles do not work- click to read article and you get a completely different article. This happens with multiple links. What am i paying for, if only to read the same article that I don't want to read

This has worked well for me, as a subscriber, to get new content daily with minimal noise from promotions. The only issue I have is the app builds up a lot of storage over time and there is no way to clear it.

Good local news. Way too many notifications. I wish I could fine-tune notification preferences

This app has a hopeless layout for daily readers. It is frustrating trying to find new daily content because they prioritize features and lists. As a result I've continued trying to read the e-edition, which they are making harder to use. I subscribe to the NY Times, The Washington Post and the Athletic and all are a pleasure. The Chronicle needs a serious UX reboot.

The introductory offer is excellent, couldn't afford not to get it. I've subscribed online before and I had a gratifying experience so it wasn't a stretch to take the subscription again. It's an excellent app, easy to use, full of informative and thoughtful discourse about the issues of the day, and I always find something interesting that I hadn't planned on seeing there.

Could be better. Like I wish it had a built-in ability to read news articles to me in a voice that was really cool

Suz. S. May 8, 2022

I'd like to see it in the paper form, not have to read every article, but be able to choose it from the pages.

Great news app for all current and former SF Bay area lovers! Extremely user friendly + enjoy reading all of the local & national news!!!

This is a competent app that works well enough, but it's lacking features that make a news app worth using instead of a browser. For example, there's no search function nor a way to save favorite articles. Also, navigation to sections, while easy to use, isn't customizable. There isn't a way to put favorite sections first. Most news apps have a customizable, slide-out side panel, but this app only has a top menu bar. A bright spot, though, is the ease of opening and using the print edition view.

I'm a 50 year Chronicle print subscriber, but since I travel frequently I was very happy when they finally released an Android app. It worked well for several weeks, but now it fails to recognize me as a subscriber. Of course, I've tried all the login options without success. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but the problem recurred after several hours. I do hope they are able to fix this bug quickly.

Con. O. Aug 18, 2020

Pretty minimal feature set. You can read current headline articles and that's about it. Dropping a star because of a persistent bug they will not fix. For probably 10% of the stories they publish, their app cannot render them. You get a blank page. You need to open up a browser and go to the webpage and find the article again to read it. What's the point of an app if it can't render your stories? Repeated attempts to resolve through support have been fruitless.

The app is terrible. It takes five minutes to load content. I've timed it, and the whole time you are stuck staring at a spinning wheel. If you leave the app for any reason, the load/spinning wheel process starts all over again. What makes this really annoying is if you go to their actual website they make sure a banner that you cannot remove even thought there is an 'X' encourages you to use the awful terrible app

Ste. B. Mar 2, 2021

The app is wonderful, until you get to one of the Chronicle's "Special Projects," after which it goes into a loop of the same three stories over and over and over. Its not possible to read anything after that. It also lacks the ability to adjust the type size, which is myopic given that old farts like myself are the prime newspaper reading audience.

--Updated The splash screen with the Chronicle logo just hangs sometimes until reboot. -- Really terrific app. Had been relying on the website for my e-subscription but the app is a game changer and is now my go to source for daily news, especially Bay Area related. Also, it's easy to link to the print edition in both e-reader mode as well as a digital replica. The app really added a ton of value to my subscription. Thanks to all the fine folks on 5th & Mission!

12/23/2021 UPDATE: The SF Chronicle app is the worst app of all time. It is constantly slow to load and sometimes never loads when you're going from page to page. It doesn't deeplink. Feel bad for their writers who are missing all the exposure. The app fails to recognize me as a subscriber. I've tried to link my subscription but keep getting an error. I have reached out to SF Chronicle for help but to no avail.

Cra. G. Dec 6, 2021

In theory, a useful app - but for the last 6 months, it's been an extremely tedious, frustrating experience; crashing/freezing multiple times during each session. It's not a 'phone issue' either, the phone being a former flagship model, justice over 2 yrs old.

Mar. G. May 19, 2021

Average. This app could use some major improvements compared to the other newspaper apps I use. For example, why can't I not post comments on articles I read like on the Chronicle's website itself? This app runs a bit slow, especially on startup. The Datebook could use a bit more organization on its selections as well. You would think the creators would have rectified these major issues by now.

May. T. Mar 5, 2022

App needs work. When I click on a headline I am frequently brought to a different article. I'd like to be able to read more than the lead article of the day.

Ame. A. Apr 5, 2022

App is currently unusable; you tap on an article on the home page and it links to a completely different article.

Mar. W. Mar 9, 2022

Won't let me save an article to read later like every other newspaper app on earth does! Update 2022: still can't save articles inside the app.

Hard to navigate. Hard to distinguish new material from old
