ScratchJr was inspired by the popular Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu), used by millions of young people (ages 8 and up) around the world. In creating ScratchJr, we redesigned the interface and programming language to make them developmentally appropriate for younger children, carefully designing features to match young children's cognitive, personal, social, and emotional development.
We see coding (or computer programming) as a new type of literacy. Just as writing helps you organize your thinking and express your ideas, the same is true for coding. In the past, coding was seen as too difficult for most people. But we think coding should be for everyone, just like writing.
As young children code with ScratchJr, they learn how to create and express themselves with the computer, not just to interact with it. In the process, children learn to solve problems and design projects, and they develop sequencing skills that are foundational for later academic success. They also use math and language in a meaningful and motivating context, supporting the development of early-childhood numeracy and literacy. With ScratchJr, children aren't just learning to code, they are coding to learn.
ScratchJr is a collaboration between the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. Two Sigma led the implementation of the Android version of ScratchJr. The graphics and illustrations for ScratchJr were created by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.

This app seems pretty good, but the drawing part has a glaring bug: the brush doesn't line up with where your finger touches the screen. I think I figured out why: if you zoom all the way out before drawing, then it lines up. I think the problem is the developer isn't accounting for the transform of the canvas correctly. Please fix =)
My 8 and 3 year olds love this. My big kid loves to make simplified versions of games he likes. The little one loves to draw and create characters, put them on the stage, and move them around. We started out playing around together and seeing what we could do. They caught on really fast, it's very simple and intuitive. They quickly started experimenting and doing things on their own. They have spent hours creating in this app building a foundation of digital design to build on.
Amazing app! Love how you can create like all these amazing stories! The only issue is, there is only 4 slots to make a story. Please add more slots for free! If you have added more slots in the future, I will change my review to 5 stars. Also the paint tool doesnt really work like it goes somewhere else on my screen, but other than that it's a good app. Written by: Olivia♡
This app is great for ages 7-11 but I'm not sure who else would use it. It's very interesting when you have finished the scratch clip with many features. I learned how to use it at school so I knew but it might be tricky starting. One thing I would say is coding is very difficult to do and parental controls use maths su.s such as 71+1. I love the app besides all that. Very entertaining.
good job man I liked👍that.I like the jump block.good app but it still needs work.need more sound blocks and a new version of paint 🎨 editor. it need some operator blocks especially the choose random number from a number to another one. anyways the developers did a great job. to make my stars 5 please do all the things I said🙂thanks again🙂 by the way I am 9 years old
Awsome for kids but the original scratch is much better in features like scratch jr does not have the costume change button i.e. (change costume to (costme2)) and you must give some more clip art voice samples but it is so attractive and easy to use. One more thing, you must give and option to get sprites and backdrops from your own file. Else the backround problem and square sprite will be the problem of user. Wish you will improve but still its nice. Keep it up. Thanks,
This is a great app, but what I really want is like 10 slides instead of 4 and more of those message things (more colours) maybe like 20 of those (if you can, and if you're wandering why I want big amounts is because I make big creations) and last but not least, I want to type for characters (or just make text move) and then it would be the BEST IT COULD BE!!!
Such a wonderful product for any beginner /kids. However, i the limitations in pages, messages doesn't support a full fledged project. Also the copy paste option not available to repeat the same instruction on multiple characters/pages. A bug to be fixed - sometimes The audio repeats or gets skipped abruptly. Hence 4 stars..
Please add more characters and script-making and please add all the sample projects that are cat on bat, etc and can you please add settings so we change the view to first person or movie version and add new maps and add multiplayer and add that we can control things in First Person and lastly add INFINITE frames to make a good story and make it like dc2 pro
Scratch JR is a program made directly for children. It teaches well, and it is shockingly intuitive. While I know lua well, it is very fun to make highly complicated things, seriously, I once made a slightly working platformer, but. There is a problem, there is no fast mode, which does the scripts without highlighting them for about 0.05 seconds, which makes the projects run slow, however, when I want to play around with scripts quickly and easily, this is perfdct, for everyone.
This app is amazing but theirs some reasons I gave it four stars 1.codeing can be very challenging for example their's no Dangle codes. 2.you can't make your own characters from scratch. Overall it's very intertaneing and fun.
The game is good for learning but i think you should update the game. Here are some updates you should make: You should let there be modes like reading science etc. You should make drawing easier (I've had this many many times) cause wherever i draw its 1 inch away from where i have my mouse (or finger etc.) Those are my reasons why. So i would give this a 2 in my ratings.
The programming element is fun but the painting doesn't wonrk as it should, there is some sort of offset, the paint appears in the wrong place. Please try to update this app with a few fixes. We would definitely pay for an updated fully functional app.
Good app but have some bugs Good app for kids to lean concepts of coding. But in editor modes, there are some bugs. When you touch to select or copy or move one objects, another object was selected or doesn't works. It seems there is some bugs and really is a headache. Kids getting confused. I'm using the app on galaxy tab t-515.
Very impressed, I got the book from a shop and hadnt realised there was an app to go with it at first. The app seems very good and alongside the book it's the perfect pairing to get my lovely 5 year old that is all about computers and gaming interested in the 0's and 1's as it where, hehe. And the fact it's a free app 👌 can't go wrong.
I absolutely LOVE this app!! I use normal scratch on my computer and thought that i would give this app a try. The only reason i have rated 4* not 5* is because you can only have 4 slides and you cant add text to sprites. If you make it so you can do this and have more slides (maybe unlimitdd) then i will rate this game 100/10. Please please please please add these features.
This app is great for beginners to or yet to be game developer, The only bad thing is there should be more screen availability, there is only 4 max backgrounds at a time, I dont like this feature, could you maybe make more backgrounds at a time? I would use it alot more. Thanks. PS, Keep inspiring us to make games.
Really great introduction to the scratch universe for young kids and a perfect to introduce the basic knowledge of coding. Having some problems downloading and sharing projects between devices on Androids though. I can send the email, the format of the project (.sjr) isn't recognised by the device or the app once downloaded though.
would not let me in. even after 2 attempts of downloading. 4th time downloading the app and it allows me to deny or allow photos and voice but as soon as it gets to "Where are you using this app?" it does nothing. Tab doesn't work, esc doesn't work, right click doesn't work, space bar doesn't work. My daughter needs this to attend her home schooling so without is only going to defer her.
I really think this app is amazing. However, I own Scratch normally, and after playing that I notice that one thing is missing, and it's one of the most useful things in Scratch ever.. There is already movement blocks. Why can't i move to a specific spot?
I love this app at first I thought that codeing was really difficult but now it is so easy because of Scratch Jr. I want them to give even the Scratch app I could not download it because it was telling me that my mobile is not compatible for the version. Please 🥺 fix that issues. I would really appreciate that.
Compared to scratch 2/3, This is VERY limited. There's no costumes, no variables, nothing. I understand that this is for a younger demographic but please add an advanced mode. Also the paint tool is frustrating.
This is terrible. First of all, the painting interface is bad. I try to draw but it goes somewhere of screen. Plus, there is no eraser! Secondly, when I'm in a project, I can literally drag anything around. Fix these problems please!!!
When i was installed it i thought it would be scratch but for mobile. But it is it's own thing with different mechanics. Just 2 things make it more like scratch, and two let you import your own stuff like sound and images. Edit:Its still in beta.
It includes many features that is why it's wonderful, however it misses some features as the guide says. For Example, in sound block there's no way to record the user voice and it just have a pop up sound.
Its an amazing app for coding, and this is coming from a scratch pro. I have made so many gameson scratch and I can code simillar games on scratch jr! It has an easy-to-understand interface and its all in all just amazing. Its suitible for scratch pros, amatures, and new scratchers!
I like this game! My daughter first started playing this at school, and she has loved it ever since! It is great and very easy to use. There are many blocks, characters,backgrounds etc. The only thing that could be improved, is the parental controls. They use very simple maths like 50+1. But apart from that, it's great and if you're thinking of downloading, definitely do so! Props to the creator(s)!
