Screen Filter

Applies a shade that acts as a dimmer to ensure your eyes don't hurt. Far more powerful than Android's built-in brightness setting. Great for low-light gaming, web browsing, and eBook reading. It even saves battery life for AMOLED displays!
More features:
- Widgets: Easy access to preset brightness levels.
- Tasker/Locale Plug-in! Set brightness based on time/place/etc. To disable, configure for 100% brightness.
- Brightness slider uses logarithmic scale for fine-grained control.
- Drag the app icon to your desktop to use for toggling on/off.
- Prompts to confirm very low brightness settings.
- Option to disable soft-key backlight (does not work on all phones).

NOTE:**
* If you accidentally make your screen go BLACK **
* 1. Pull your battery or (Nexus7) hold power button for 10 seconds 2. Uninstall the app to reset your bad brightness setting 3. Reinstall the app and use it normally again

I absolutely loved this app and used it for years, but changes to Android 12 made it unusable. The filter completely blocks access to the touchscreen. I'm not sure if the app is even still being maintained, unfortunately. I've dropped it now for Darker Pro. It has decent Tasker integration and so far meets my meager needs. Thanks for the good times, Screen Filter.

No longer fully functional, looks like it doesn't like the newest Android update. Can turn the filter on, but then it makes it so you can't use the screen at all. Soft keys still work, but the rest of the screen doesn't. So, it's useless; if you don't want to use your phone you'd just turn the screen off completely, not dim it further but then leave it on. I've been using this app since probably it first came out, it's been my favorite and I'm sad I have to find a new one.

Works great... Until Android 12 update :( I've used this app for years without any problem. The darkest setting in dark mode (white text on black) is too bright for nighttime reading. The brightness of the screen kept my wife up, so I looked for a way to darken it further. This app was it! The Android 12 update came along and the screen freezes. No screen input except for the notification bar. Needless to say, that doesn't work for me. Time to search for a new app! :(

Perfect until just lately, and now on e I activate the app, my touch screen stops working. There is an option in settings for Screen Filter to run behind other apps, but that kinda defeats the purpose- for me, at least. I hope this is remedied soon. It truly was perfect in it's simplicity of design and ease of use.

I've been using this app for years without any issues. After the recent Android update, this app no longer works properly. Once you enable the filter the entire screen is locked so you can't access anything else. :( which means I can't watch my Netflix shows at night to fall asleep to or read anything on my screen.

Glad to see I'm not alone in being devastated that this app is incompatible with Android 12. An essential app for me for many years So long, partner... Night Owl and Screen Dimmer seem like potential replacement apps. Also check out "Extra Dim" Android feature- can put a little icon shortcut in bottom right corner that functions like Screen Filter did. Highest intensity still a bit brighter than my Screen Filter setting was.

Fairly good, does exactly as advertised and does not require any sketchy app permissions like the other screen filter apps. The other apps require full network access and install api permissions, which I dont condone at all for something as simple and straight forward as a brightness adjuster. This app is honest and not gimmicky.

Its simple yet very useful compared to other filter apps, and i like it that way. It weighs less than a single MB when the other filter apps i installed are like 20MB, so id say this one wins in how optimized it is. Only thing i dont like is the icon: a round icon, i suggest like the other apps; doesnt have to be anything complex, just a simple circle idk without that orange phone, but again this is a matter of taste and my personal one on top of it.

This was a great app on my last phone. Being able to dim the screen beyond the standard settings means being able to use your phone in places not normally allowed. I could even use it in the movie theater without disturbing anyone else. Unfortunately, it doesn't work entirely on my new S9. It won't dim the shade menu, or the soft keys, which are bright enough by themselves to disturb others. Hopefully there's an update coming, as I find this app to be one of the must haves

The app is great in terms of what it's supposed to do. Maybe too great though... I accidently put the brightness at 0% and submitted that and I couldn't see anything for a good 5 minutes. Thankfully my eyes adjusted, but it was scary to think that I might never be able to see anything on my phone ever again. I wish there was a quick but simple method (maybe triple clicking the home button or sth like that) that helps users exit the dark screen mode quickly.

Hope this gets updated. It doesn't work well anymore with newer versions of Android OS. This was very useful before though. I recommend using this only if you're using older Android phones. EDIT: It's still actually the best screen filter in the play store I've tried so I'll continue using it still. It also contains no ads and it's absolutely free compared to other similar filter apps.

This does exactly what it's supposed to do, darken up your screen a bit more than the default so you can use it in a darkened room without bothering anyone. I have one complaint. With my Samsung in night mode, all of the notifications turn black with white print, except for the one that's there when Screen Filter is running. Notification slide is not under the filter, so if I pull it down, the bright white Screen Filter Running notification is blinding. Please make it black!

Excellent.simple does the job. You can manually adjust levels. Warning do not reduce to "10% or lower" because your phone will go completely blank, however, the app will give you 10 seconds to confirm (which you won't be able to because it's literally a black screen when in 10% or under level), so your phone will automatically reset to normal brightness after 10 seconds of non responsive to confirmation!

I can't recommend this app anymore. I used it for years on my old phone and it worked great. Darkened the whole screen. But with my newer android phone it only darkens the main screen, not the banners or controls. Because of that, I don't use it as much. It really doesn't do what it's supposed to anymore. This app hasn't had an update in many years. What works in 2013 is bound to have issues in 2019... It needs to be fixed.

The best dimming app. Unlike any other, to activate it, you simply tap the app. I realized you can set the otherwise useless bixby button to this app. With a press of a button, you dim your screen, press it again and you're back to normal. I don't know if such a shortcut was intended by the creators, but it's much quicker than exiting your current app and having to find this app to turn it on. It doesn't dim the lockscreen, navigation bar, or notifications bar, but that doesn't really matter.

I've used this dimmer app for years, and only this dimmer app. It's simple, and probably exactly what you're looking for. I have never had this popup ad issue - like I've said, I've used this exact app for years, on at least eight different phones & tablets. My phone is 100% ad-free 100% of the time, so I would definitely notice if something were off. Thank you guys, I have been getting away with my late-night Facebook scrolling & email checking since 2014!! :p

By far, the most effective filter that I have used on any and all of my Android devices over the years . Unfortunately, it has not been updated to work fully with newst Samsung tablets. Never the less , it still deserves a 5 Star. If you create a pro version, I would invest in it , without any hesitation. Thank you

Excellent and functional. I see some other comments lamenting that it doesn't work on latest Android or on Google pixel 2, but I'm using both and having no issues? I mostly use it for migraines though, and while my usage is hardly regular, it does stand out for me that the notifications/back and home buttons/pull down system menu aren't dimmed at all, which is uh kind of eye-gougingly noticeable with a significant migraine. With a minor one or just for late night reading it's not so noticeable.

This app has worked WONDERFULLY until recently. For some reason, after I activate the filter, I can't use my screen anymore. I can't swipe or click on anything. The only way to fix this is to restart my phone to reset the app. I've tried reinstalling, but still same problem. I've used this app for years so it makes me sad. Perhaps it's not compatible with the new Android update?

Jen. M. Jan 28, 2022

No longer works properly. The filter disables everything on the screen. The only way to close the app is by pulling down the notification bar and closing from there - the notification bar being the only thing that still seems to be interactive by that point. Had to uninstall.

been using this app for years. works perfectly, light weight, and easy as can be. I understand this app hasn't been updated in years, but I have 1 suggestion and 1 bug to report. suggestion... remove the ability to completely black the screen. just a bad idea. bug... maybe it's a safety feature, but when active I cannot install apks from SD. I can uninstall all day however...

Really loved this app. I have very sensitive eyes and I relied on it heavily to be able to look at my screen at night. Android 12 has made it impossible to use as it freezes the screen except for the buttons on the bottom. I will restore the other 3 stars when this app is updated.

Absolutely brilliant (or not!) app. I am setting up an old tablet to use as a photo frame with rolling album pictures. The display is usually too bright especially at night time but this app makes it just right. Love the tasker integration so I can set different levels for night and day and automate a switch of display to camera images (with increase and then decrease of screen filter levels) when camera alert is received. A very well thought out and perfectly developed app. Would be worth.purchasing. but as it is not an option it is definately worth a small donation to WikiPedia. Full credit to the developer.

I've been using this app for about 10 years, and I've never once had an issue with it. Now, after this Android update, it locks my screen with the exception of the three buttons at the bottom and the notification bar at the top. This means I can't use my phone when the app is enabled, therefore, I can no longer use the app. Please fix this issue soon.

Eos. R. Dec 2, 2021

I love this app, it's very useful, but it needs to be updated to adapt to changes in Android 12 that prevent screen overlays from passing touches through them. Any of you savvy enough to figure out developer mode and download ADB can override this with; adb shell settings put global block_untrusted_touches 0 But until it's updated I suspect the vast majority of users are going to find it unusable, which is sad.

Mic. E. Mar 8, 2022

I used this for years, but now it just stopped working after a recent phone update. Now the filter "overlay" is essentially blocking the screen, making everything unresponsive to touch. I hope this gets fixed soon so I can go back to 5 stars.

Lin. K. D. Mar 19, 2022

I wish people in the reviews would understand this app was mostly designed for older phones and hasn't been updated in 9 years. The only ones with issues are ones with newer phones because they're obviously not supported for it. Not that difficult to understand.

I had two issues on my Galaxy A7 2016. The first one was screen flickering on low brightness and the second one was that my screen wouldnt turn on after I press the unlock button, I always had to press it at least five times and sometimes it took more than 5 minutes of unlock button spamming. It was really annoying, but this app fixed both problems. Amazing app, highly recommended for anyone with similar problems or to someone who just wants even lower brightness on their phone and more screen options.
