ShakeAlertLA

ShakeAlertLA alerts you that an earthquake has been detected and that you may soon feel shaking. You can also use this app to prepare for an earthquake, get details on recent earthquakes, and find help after an earthquake. This app is brought to you by Mayor Eric Garcetti and the City of Los Angeles, and built on the ShakeAlert system developed by the U.S. Geological Survey.

This is a useless app. I have turned on location tracking, notifications, and override do not disturb, but I have yet to receive a single alert on my phone. We've had at least three earthquakes 4.5 or higher but no notifications at all. Also, instead of tracking my location at every single moment, give us the option to simply enter our zip code. Lastly, every individual has a different tolerance for earthquakes, so allow us to set the magnitude at which to receive notifications.

Very glad the app was released (thank you!), but very unclear how it is going to work, so you can know what to look or listen for from your phone (no "demo" mode). Also terribly insufficient supporting material. Will it work if "do not disturb" is turned on? Does volume need to be turned up? Alerts turned on? Will it work if in "airplane mode", etc. Better supporting info, documentation and the ability to demo will save lives.

For a new app, it is well thought out: - easy-to-use practical information, - covering before, during, and after, - equipped with lists and maps, - seems to alert only those in affected areas by accessing phones' locations. So far, the app requires minimal access to private information and battery drainage. It needs a few important features such as DND override and offline capability. Reminder: this is not a prediction app but to alert the ones in progress. The app helps you survive through.

There is a better alternative to this app, and it doesn't track your phone and drain your phone's battery. It is called 'Everbridge Mass Communications'. Everbridge is a paid service which is handled by the City/County. In case of an emergency the mayors office can send a single message to everyone in the city alerting them of an incoming disaster. Residents of that city/county can opt-in by providing their phone number as a point of contact. Search for 'Everbridge' in the app store.

Drains battery with location always on. I agree with others that the app should be able to just send push notifications, but to require that the location or GPS function be always on for this to work is unreasonable. I'm using a Galaxy S8 phone and other apps work fine without requiring this. The info on the app is helpful to know, esp. the section on what to after a quake. Well intentioned app.

6.4 EQ today, and no alert, very annoying. I do understand the need to balance severity verus nuisance alerts, but why not simply allow the user to go into settings and adjust the trigger level for themselves to meet their needs? Problem solved! For those that don't want to mess with the settings, the defualt value can be whatever the authorities decides works best. Also, absolutely no way to test this. What does it do when it goes off? A sound? Flashy lights? Might be nice to know what to expect, yes? This can be a great life saving tool,. but a 1 Star rating until these issues are corrected. Keep up the good work!

Allow people to set a home and work address, with custom alerts for each. Most people spend 90%+ of their time on one of those two places anyways. That's the most obvious choice for people who doesn't want to be tracked all the time, or have their battery negatively affected by an app that's supposed to alert you about an earthquake that might not even happen on the life of that phone...

Completely worthless. We had a 6.4 earthquake today. No alert, no info. Has never registered or shown recent history of a single earthquake the entire time I've had it (I downloaded it when they released it). Utter failure on the part of the mayor's office. Would give it 0 stars, but that isn't an option. Deleting immediately.

Great idea, but there is no reason given in the terms as to why constant location monitoring is required or what the data is used for. As soon as a user denies the location tracking, the app shuts down. I hope this is corrected in the future. An obvious fix would be to just push the alerts out to anyone who has the app; no tracking necessary.

Doesn't work! I have push notifications, location services, and the app is up to date. I haven't received any alerts not even for the 6.9 earthquake last night and I've been in LA for all the earthquakes. The recent earthquakes maps don't have anything on them. The only thing that works is the tips and planning which is why Im giving it 2 stars.

This app could save thousands of lives, so please get it right. Issues: 1) There's a tab at the bottom that says "Earthquake alert..." and clicking on it brings me to a blank map with a huge red terrifying header that also says "Earthquake alert...". Is this an alert? What do the elipses signify? 2) Clicking the "view recent earthquakes" takes me to a blank list despite the fact that the Ridgecrest 7.1 was yesterday. 3) "Push Notifications" & "Phone Settings" on settings screen do nothing.

i love the idea and the app looks good but you should have an option about turning on location setting. i get that with location on i would get more details for my exact location but if its going to drain my battery that wouldn't be helpful in an emergency either. im not worried about saved data im worried about a dead battery when i need my phone the most.

This app should not require ALWAYS ON LOCATION TRACKING. There is absolutely no reason I should have to divulge my every movement to the government in order to get an early warning for earthquakes. Luckily there is a simple fix. Give me the ability to turn off ALWAYS ON LOCATION TRACKING in exchange for the inconvenience of possibly getting an alert when I'm out of town. I can't believe they're forcing us to choose between our safety and our privacy when there is a way to have both. Fix this and I'll revisit my review.

does not work! after the 6.4 on July 4th we were told it worked but the trigger to send an alert was set higher than the 6.4 itself. they said they are already lowering it. now the followibg day we had a 7.1 and it still didnt get triggered. this app is just something the mayor of LA is using as a propaganda tool. this app does not work.

Looks like a update is overdue, took a few minutes after the shaking stopped before it even updates the recent quakes list and 07/30/2020 initially reported as a 4.5, no alert, then downgraded to a 4.2 while changing location further away from the epicenter along with aftershock 10 minutes later which both show on opposite sides of the city line where initially reported miles away from where it now lists. People can't move to safety when app doesn't work within parameters anymore.

My phones malware app found numerous problems with your app. Developers need to create a better app. Back up data access risk, critical code error, possible risk of access hijacking. Poor data storage practices, possible unsecured communication, potential unauthorized access & vulnerable to malicious modifications. For a local government app it's poorly put together. The security of this app could be tighter. This app could be better. I'm sure it's a very important app but please fix these issues

update: well, at least the recent earthquake list works now. still don't see the point of an alert just in LA county. if something hits here we will immediately know. not gonna need an alert. it would be more useful to know the near distant waves coming in. old review: sorry for the poor review but i have location services turned on and the alert map and recent quake activity isn't showing anything. and there was just an aftershock and there was no notice.

A. G. u. Jul 7, 2019

Keep it until it gets better. If it isn't a dangerous quake it doesn't warn you. Do you want a panic everytime a quake WON'T hurt you? Will people then start to ignore it? Agreed, the threshold should be lower. If the location is on, it doesn't mean you're being tracked or the information is being sent anywhere. It takes another permission to record it. For the last 15 years your phone was designed to have enough battery to leave your location on. What if this app works and you don't have it?

A. G. u. Jul 10, 2019

Looking past the failed warnings on the two 6.0+ earthquakes, the new update fixes the problem of any future alerts for nonthreatening earthquakes. However, the recent earthquakes page does not open/work at all. In addition, I've seen all the reviews about location, and I sort of agree. If the app is already designed to only alert LA County, is there really a need for location to always be on?

A. G. u. Jul 4, 2019

Doesnt even work at all. Great idea and much needed, but this aint it! Its July 4th, and we just had a 6.4 quake here in So Cal, and though I had my location turned on as requested, its 3 hours now since and STILL nothing registers on the app! Nothing! Like it didnt happen! No warning at all, and as far as the app is concerned, nothings happened today! Very disappointing! Deleted! 👎

The location enabled at all times is an automatic "No" for me. Even privacy issues asides, it will kill your battery. The argument for having it on, is very weak. Instead, let me enter zip codes or areas of city for areas I need notifications for. Untill then delete. Developer, look at other comments, they all the same.

A. G. u. Jan 6, 2019

For those of you complaining about the app needing location on, it's because of push notifications. It's not going to notify you when you are in San Francisco, it's only for Los Angeles County right now until USGS gets it rolled out to the rest of the state. Let us all pray that this app never receives a push notification, but if it does, let's hope we can get to a safe spot and survive.

A. G. u. Jan 6, 2019

so many complaints, is v1! read more here goo.gl/VhP21V it's expanding to entire west coast eventually! 👍 So "why not SMS?" there's a few reasons i could guess why: push notifications are just simply faster normally, SMS alerts can clog networks, losing crucial seconds, and depend on carrier. The most high risk people are inside where wifi is better than cell service. hopefully its both later on. but why was the source taken down?? unsettling.

A. G. u. Feb 12, 2019

Given the feedback I somewhat retract my privacy concerns. There should still be an option to enter a default address for when outside the area for notification. Even when traveling with an alert I could check in on my place, shut off water, gas, etc remotely.

A. G. u. Jan 27, 2019

App has been installed for almost a month. No discernible drain on the phone battery. It does use location data, but only to calculate shaking at the phone's location. So far, works great.

A. G. u. Jul 4, 2019

App had its chance to test it out today (July 4th) but FAILED to report among many people throughout socal. I know its somewhat new technology but didnt worked... i had locations on, alerts on as well, and app is updated. Really depend on this app and really having 2nd thoughts. Ill still keep the app hoping for an update soon to resolve the issue. Hope everyone is ready and if not stop procrastinating.

A. G. u. Jan 12, 2019

It's about time that this was rolled out, it has been a talking point for years. But there HAS TO BE a TEST function to preview the quake alert. With only a few seconds warning (in some cases) it needs instantaneous recognition to be of any use.

Great app, except there was no notification last night when we had a 4.6 Earthquake. I checked all the settings to make sure my phone allows the app to send notification at all time. After a few hours, I decided to uninstall it because it doesn't do the 1 thing I needed this app to do, which is to send notification.

Reb. T. Sep 20, 2020

This app is up-to-date, including no-disturb override. However, seriously disappointed that a +4.5 EQ, with an epicenter 9 miles away from DTLA (personal location), was not announced. Not even with delay. The City of LA wasted money on this and it's entirely pointless. Google sent me even a notification without me signing up for their service.

A. G. u. Jan 22, 2020

I would love to give this app high rating howeverthe inability to have this application override do not disturb mode on any phone renders it useless at night. I currently have a OnePlus 6t with Android 9 there is no way to have this bypass do not disturb mode. So in essence if someone is sleeping and has do not disturb mode enabled on their phone this app will completely fail them.
