Shoebox spectrophotometer

The shoebox spectrophotometer app allows your smartphone to be used as the light detecting (and absorbance calculating) part of a spectrophotometer. The rest of the spectrophotometer you will need to make yourself!

This is the app used in the article, 'Demonstrating Principles of Spectrophotometry by Constructing a Simple, Low-Cost, Functional Spectrophotometer Utilizing the Light Sensor on a Smartphone', published recently in the Journal of Chemical Education, http://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jchemed.7b00548

There is an overview of how this can be done simply from a shoebox, a DVD and some building block on the YouTube link below.

Please note, your smartphone must have a light sensor for this app to work

Have fun!

This is a great tool for experimenting with different types of lighting. One must already have a basic understanding of the energy emitting from light to understand this app. This app truly does give a basis that creates a scale for comparison. I have experimented with four different lamps using the same measurements and have received different data from each lamp. I am not sure of the accuracy of the absorption rate within the app. It does calculate different absorption with same measurements.

Can I use this app to measure the % of light absorption through different lenses? Thanks for responding....will try that.

This app is simple, but effective.

I thought from the name I'd be able to measure emission spectra and identify elements. If there's a way to do it with this app, I sure couldn't find it.

Simple, but does what it says and works well.
